79 Comstar Wheels
« on: April 16, 2010, 08:08:17 AM »
I just bought these on eBay in a hope that I would be able to get them to fit on my 1972 CB750K2

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350160180685&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120371192246&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Now my question is, how much work will I actually need to do to get this to safely fit on the bike?  According to the specs I read, the new wheel is only 1/4 inch thinner than my current wheel.  I know that the dual disc brakes on the front will be a mission, but I will not worry about that one bit until I get the wheel safely mounted...

I read through quite a lot of posts and it seemed to just be people's opinions about whether or not you should do it and the advantages of classic spokes.  I hate inner tubes and classic spokes,  they always give me problems.  I will eventually be wanting to swap out the entire front end, but I have not been able to get much info about that yet...  Nor do I have the money for that yet...  If I had the money I would just throw an extra wide front end on there.

The frame is a 1972 CB750K2.  As far as I know the stock swing arm and forks are on there.  Third owner with no papers....

You might want to get a title before you start pouring money and time into this bike...

If you plan to put those wheels on there, you will likely need the forks and swingarm from the 79 cb.

I am looking at the K2's title right now.  It even has the correct VIN and Engine numbers.  8)  What does the title have to do with the wheels?

OK....well, if I have to change all that, I might be selling the wheels then.  I want some nice fat wheels on both ends eventually.  I just want this thing road ready for the summer...............  I know that all I NEED is to replace the rear rim due to it being rusted through and a spoke puncturing the tube.

I guess I need to find me a nice wide triple tree...

You said "no papers" so everyone responded.    I'm sure you could get the wheels to work just might need to have some spacers made.  Someone here put them on a 550.

front one will be too wide.

Well, I hope it is pretty straight forward.  If the front one is too wide, it isn't that big of a deal right now.  The rear wheel just loses 10 psi and then stops leaking. If this wheel doesn't work out without a bunch of mods, then I will just buy the rim and spokes from cmsnl.com and sell what I have.

The cush drive in the rear hub changed in 79' from four pairs of rubber (pre 79') to FIVE pairs of rubber snubbers. Your earlier rear hub will not interchange, you will have to determine if the 79' wheel and sprocket hub combination will work with the earlier driveline. I've got a pair of 79' comstars I would like to mount on my 78' but have not got around to taking the critical measurements. I think the rear disk brake on the 79' comstars will be the deal breaker for me (my 78' has a rear drum).

Good to hear that the 78F Comstars will fit a 76F without much reworking.  I think I just bought a pair of like new 78F Comstars to put on my 76F for $40 plus shipping, with the rotors included.

Some folks like the spokes, but I grew up duiring the mag wheel craze back in the 70s and never got over it.

:(   That's bad news...  lol

Yeah, I really just don't like spokes.  I was wanting to put a disc brake on the rear, so that's not a deal breaker.

So, if I get a set of 78 or earlier mag wheels, they will fit without a bunch of other mods?

Isn't there just a place on the web that has a good selection of wheels?  All I can find is to look it up by bike and they never have anything from the 70s listed, except for harleys.  Then you finally get to a wheel and it doesn't tell you any specs...  Do I seriously have to go to the dealer to order new wheels?

EBay, Craigslist etc. is your best friend to get used Comstars. The dealer does not carry them anymore. (They were over $300 each at Honda).

Not necessarily for Comstar wheels, just ANY wheels.  I can't really wait for something to pop up on eBay... I need ANY wheel that will just fit right on my K2 frame.  Once I get this thing rideable, I will then start getting together everything I need to modify it the way that I want.  All I need is to get this electrical system figured out and a rear wheel that doesn't leak air through the rim.

Got a wheel for sale?   lol

Can you not just place a tube in your tire to stop the air leaking through your old rim for now?
Place a rubber spoke  guard over the spokes nipples before mounting up the tube first.
tubes do work fine inside tubeless tires.
get you down the road and allow you the time to find what it is you need/want
If the rim is very bad and not safe from rust then take a trip to a bike wreckers or buy one of the many
used rims on eBay or like sites, from bikes being cut up for parts and let USPS do the driving for you.

I do believe the wheel to be beyond repair.  If the rim is not beyond repair when I get the new one, then I am thinking that I will put it on the front after some clean up.  That's the goal, to get down the road.

I just saw this on eBay and I am pretty sure it will be a direct fit, am I right?

How do you think it looks?  I haven't seen inside one of the hubs before....

OK.   I just got the wheel, time to remove the old one and see what's up.  IDK if I will be doing it today though, it is raining off and on and I don't have a garage.... lol
