$200 Score From Craigslist!
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:38:21 PM »
I just picked this 78 CB750K off Craigslist for $200.  The P.O. said the clutch was slipping so he took it apart, couldn't figure out how to get it back together, and there it's been sitting for a year.  I took a look at the box of clutch parts and everything seems to be there (frankly if something's missing, I'm not gonna #$%*).  Engine turned over, electrics work, and he had various repair invoices and all kinds of other documentation.  So, it's in my hands now!!!

Yeah I was pretty stoked.  The seller had posted the ad at 9:00pm and I saw the posting at midnight.  I thought for sure it would be gone already for that price, but I shot an email anyways and ensured cash payment immediately.  I will let you all know when I get it road-worthy.  Maybe I'll sell it to ZZ ;D ;D

You'll be happy to know that when he first posted this he started off at around 750 from what i remember and he said he would professionally restore it for cheap. You saw it at the right time!  Now I feel like i should buy an auto....

this makes me want to live in the midwest. I see this kind of insanity all the time out there.

That find helps balance my last experience on CL where a guy was asking $1000 for a 78, CB750K, "nice" bike.  Showed up after an hour drive and it was a rusted hull with a seized engine.  $200 wouldn't buy the parts so I walked.  Oh well, the wife and I enjoyed dinner together on the trip and I got to look at yet another CB in a dirt floor shed.

Nice score there digger.  It seems the CB's in the northeast have dried up.  Don't even see many for sale any more and when I do they are in terrible shape.

What 'cha gonna do with that bike?  If you're getting rid of the 4 into 4's, I'd be interested.   I know, I know bad etiquette, but all's fair in love and restoring bikes...

Mcuozzo - you have dibs on the exhaust if I decide to part it out.  What I intend to do right now though, is get the clutch repaired and make sure everything else is in good mechanical condition and probably sell it complete.  Except for sidecovers and a mirror, everything seems complete.  I know the later models are not as popular for restoration, but maybe somebody wants to renew this puppy.

Then again, I would love to have a spare engine and ditch the rest...

SD, I might have an extra set of 78K side covers.  I say might because I was gonna trade with a local guy for some other parts and can't remember if I did.  I'll look for them tomorrow.

Funny because I think the 77/78Ks look best if done right.  And I think that style exhaust is great looking.

For instance....

If you were the first to contact him, then why was digger on his way there when you called? Doesn't sound like you were serious about going to buy it.

Because when I talked with the guy he said digger had commet to the buy on the e-mail. I said I would have cash inhand. He responded to a bunch of people and yes I would have bought it that is why i wrote what i wrote in the last post . really looking for a first time project to learn more about metal work and motors.

Thanks anyways mcuozzo; might have to hit up Frankenstuff even though he loathes making these ones.

Jverfz1:  I am not going to part it out or sell it right now.  I am going to fix it up and probably ride it a bit.  Honestly, if you are looking to do a cafe project and rebuild a motor, etc., I don't think this is the bike for you.  Aside from slapping a clutch in it, the engine should already be good and as I said earlier, everything else is pretty complete.  This one is better for a resto, IMHO.  The project bikes are out there, just look at my 78F.

But, if I decide to sell this one, I will let you know.  Thanks.

So I put a clutch in it, got a new battery, and fired it up tonight.  It's in the low 40's right now, so it's not too enthusiastic about running smoothly on its own, but it does run.  However, the seal behind the points is PUKING oil!  Gonna have to order one before this bike goes around the block.

Wow, that just doesn't happen in my neck of the woods.  The midwest seems to be littered with old bikes at good prices.  When I was looking for a 550, I repeatedly saw CL ads for decent looking bikes in my price range, but it seemed like they were always in IL, KY, AR, MO, OH, too far to go to look at something I may not buy.  Around here anything at that price point has been leaning against a tree for 15 years.

Congrats on that purchase.
