Interchangeability of parts
« on: May 23, 2011, 06:05:39 AM »
I recently purchased a 1972 cb750. I was able to ride it home and everything seemed fine until about 2 miles from my house and then it's like the engine lost all power. I was able to limp home and upon pulling off the cover that houses the camshaft I found that not only did the camshaft itself basically split in two but a rocker arm had also broke and one of the camshaft housings had been damaged. Needless to say I'm a little disheartened at the moment.

Anyways, my question is at this point I'd rather just try and replace the whole cyclinder head with camshaft, valves, camshaft housing etc.. What other year cylinder heads will fit onto a 1972 ?

Ouch! Welcome aboard, wish your first experience had been better. I think the 72 thru 76 are identical, there are others that will know for sure. Sounds like oil starvation to the top end. Was there oil in it? If the oil level was correct then I would be on the lookout for a possible obstruction in the oil path to the top end. I have seen several posts on that topic.

Good luck!

Well the oil had definitely not been changed in a while, it was very dark and the oil filter was very clogged as well. I was hoping my first experience was a better one as well. Between finding broken parts, stripped bolts and breaking things myself it has been somewhat of a frustrating experience thus far.
