Worst Roadway Debris You've Seen?
« on: October 14, 2011, 06:49:41 PM »
Driving along a packed freeway today, I saw a big brass cap sitting in the lane to my left, just on the other side of the line.  Luckily the cars in front of me, and to my left missed it, but as I watched in my rear view mirror, I saw an Audi drive over it, and the cap shoot out like a rocket across three lanes of traffic.  It reached a max height of about 5 feet, just high enough to pummel a mid size sedan driver's face.  I saw a Cadillac swerve, but luckily no one got hit, and it made it onto the right hand shoulder.  Another quarter mile down the road I passed the porta potty hose that the cap belonged to, laying in a different lane.  So, if someone had got hit with it, not only would it have messed them up bad, it would have been with a porta potty hose cap!

So, what's some of the worst roadway debris you've ever seen?

I did not see it happen but a forklift fork or other part fell off a truck in front of a kid I know.
Took his leg off below the knee..
A long time ago I pulled a U turn on my nice gold 72 750.. did not see my buddy coming up on me at high speed.. needless to say  I was the debris.... and he hit me...

... at 95mph....

.... that hurt...

I ran over a nine inch supply hose that fell off a fire truck.  I straddled the hose with my car wheels and it wasn't bad until I got to the aluminum coupler.  BAM! and $2000 of damage to my GTI.

I had a big fishing net get caught up under my old Ranger pickup while blazing down the hiway at 80MPH. It came out of a boat that was being towed in the lane to the right of me. I pulled over....dislodged it and brought it to my buds house where I was heading to. It was aluminum and he put it in with his recycle stuff.

Middle of the night 6 of us in a minivan heading to a nascar race in Rockingham after work. Sat night late. We work food and beverage.  A long strech with lights way up ahead and all of a sudden....  Cinder blocks .. everywhere and just littering the interstate. We missed all of them but I swear the doors were dragging the pavement before we slalomed to a creep. Then we finally went through the mine field. The truck had pulled over which was the source of lights we saw moments before. I think he had dropped almost two pallets worth.
We hit some pieces but were very lucky. Its still a popular story among us some 15 years later!

There was a fatality in Oklahoma City, Didn't see it and they didn't show much on TV.  I was looking for an article or post, only found this.

Try googling "dangerous Trailers" website. Accidents listed by state and headlines.

Or I-40 accident website. Unfortunately linking up to any articles just sends you back to just a headline or registration to a site. CDB keyboardist must have had a dozen or more headlines.

Just last night I was travelling to a nearby town and half way there as I was driving along there was on a bend in the road, sugarcane about 6" deep and about 50 yards long was covering most of the road, for those of you who dont know, sugarcane is basically a tall thick stemmed grass and when they harvest it they cut it into pieces about a foot long, and it is usually about 1 to 2 inches around, when you drive over it, it feels like you are driving over needle roller bearings, it was scary in a car I'm glad I wasn't on the bike is all I can say. It is bad enough on the bike hitting a small amount of it on the farm where I don't really go that fast.  The only way I can think of that amount ending up on the road is the door on one of the bins on the trailer must have popped open :o

For me, it was a combination of a heavy rain for a couple days, and 17 year secada larvae.  The rain drove the larvae out of the ground early, covering the roadway with slippery goo.  It was somewhat tricky to even walk.

Diidn't see it hit the road because it was on a split highway going the other way, about 1/2 sheet of plywood lift off the roof of a travel trailer. Must have worked out as no sirens or reports of damage in the local news, but very scary to see!

Years ago I was driving a big rig in front of the Oakland Colliseum. All the sudden I see this car wheel bouncing up in front of me. Then I see a 3 legged VW bug making its way over to the shoulder on the right. The wheel was picking up momentum and going higher & higher each bounce. Just as I was passing it....It hopped over the center divider and came down on a T-Bird right where the roof meets the windshield on the passenger side. I then was passed it but saw the T-Bird limping to the shoulder in my mirror. That was some crazy sh!t right there!!!

Wife and I were almost across the Mackinac bridge during a high wind warning.  A small car was towing a homebuilt house trailer going the other way.  A huge gust of wind hit the trailer and it overturned, it broke apart and the next thing we knew we were pelted with underwear, t-shirts  and everything else you would pack for a vacation.

The absolute worst I ever saw on the road was 4 badly burned bodies that had been pulled from a head-on collision between a car and a van.  They were frozen in the sitting position.

driving a heavy truck along the freeway when the car in front swerves into the next lane, there was a big dog like a shepard dead on the roadway,i wasnt going to swerve or even try and change lanes so i just drove over it as another car was passing me,it got covered with splatter, when i got to where i was going i had a look under the truck and it was a butchers picnic exploded, that car wouldve been a joy to clean.

Just today I saw a 6' tall metal shelf unit along the guardrail on a bridge over the West River on I-91 here in Brattleboro.  It wasn't in the lane but it could easily get hit.  It's 160' to the water below.

Too many to list them all but here are some "High-lights":
26' 2" X 12" in two lanes, 8' ladder, a sofa, Black Bears on several occasions, several plastic lawn chairs over many years, mattresses, German Shepard, many Deer bodies and parts,
a 4' X 4' box with GOD knows in it, Hammers, steel pipes, it goes on forever...
Be careful when riding bikes. It is not only the cagers that are out to kill you.   ;)

Lumber stories.

I saw about six sheets of 1/2 inch osb on the road. Evidently a truck dropped them in a pile in the left hand turn lane. I got ready to snatch them up, they were al in condition condition just stacked there, when a car pulled up on top of them in the left hand lane and stopped.

When the light turned green the car on top of them could not move, it just sat in place as the rear wheel spun until it had  spit  each 4'x8' sheet of OSB  back down the road.

I was following a truck full of lawn care equipment. He was pulling a ratty old trailer with tiny wheels and it, too, was loaded down with lawn care stuff. Weedeaters, leaf blowers, rakes, etc.
The trailer was swerving pretty badly and everytime he hit an expansion joint it would jump a couple of inches. Eventually, it got away from him, started fishtailing anbd bouncing on those little lawnmower tires on his home-made trailer and, next thing you know, an industrial size, walk behind leaf blower comes flying off the back.
I'm not talking about a backpack leaf blower. Imagine a VW engine with twi wheels and a handle. It's what they use at business parks and universities to clean the curbs and sidewalks. Probaly a couple hundred pounds AT LEAST.
It's bouncing and carrening across three lanes of traffic at 70 mph off the back of that trailer. Cars were everywhere, like a bad Hollywood movie. Somehow, everyone avoided it.

Driving down the Texas panhandle several years ago, my wife and I passed a semi full of cattle that had drifted onto the median and overturned.  They were using a front end loader to scoop up the bodies and dump them into another trailer.
