where can I find???
« on: June 25, 2012, 04:17:29 PM »
I just bought my first 1978 Honda cb750 four Super Sport. I was on a fishing trip and bought it from a cousins husband for $500.00. Since I had my boat I couldn't pull both home ( and NO I was not leaving the boat behind ). I go back in a couple weeks to get it but in the mean time I have a couple questions. Where can I find like build options or dealer available patrs list for that year? It has a coiple parts on it that I am not sure belong. 1st. Is a grab bar off the back of the rear seat and 2nd. Is a set of brush guard / foot rest things mounted to the front.

Thanks

Welcome. Not sure where you can find such a list. What is it exactly that you are trying to find out?
The 2nd item you describe sounds like like crash bars or case savers, both were popular aftermarket items that were bolted on the bije after purchase.
If you post photos, we can give you more info.

It does almost sound like from what you are describing that you have a crash bar and a sissy bar.   Without pictures it is going to be hard to see what you are describing.  KG Products did make a crash bar for that bike way back in the day.  But in order to be sure you are going to need to send us pictures.  Best to go look on ebay for a dealer's parts book.

Lots of OEM parts are still available from dealers & some have the original micrfiche parts posted on line, check out any numbers of them.

I think you can see the bars that I am talking about in these pics. I will get more as soon as I pick the bike up. I am just trying to find out what is original and what is not. I know the mirrors and the seat are not.

The engine guards are a common addition.  Not exactly sure, but the rear grab bar looks a little different.  As well as the mirrors & paint, those rear peg mounts are nice but maybe 750 guys can say if they are stock..otherwise looks like a great find! Congrats.

You'll have to check the serial number on the engine. It appears that someone has changed the engine out as the 78Fs had black engines (none of 750 ever had red cylinders...).

From the pictures, the seat appears to be from a much earlier model 750. Not sure where the grab bar is from, but not a 78F.
Handlebars and mirrors have been changed.
As other have said, yes the case guards are after market.
Certainly doesnt look like a bad bike.

Does it run?

Yea it started right up after we put a bit of gas and a battery in it. I know the engine was painted by the previous owner with red high temp paint so that will be soda blasted along with anything else red as the bike was black from the factory. The serial number on the engine is CB750E 3111997, if that helps anyone give me any info about the bike. I don't know the frame number yet until I go pick it up.

Nice score. The seat is definitely from a different model.

Don't take this wrong but that is a seriously bastardized F'n K. I can't tell if it's more F or more K. Start with the frame serial number. Looks like a K engine unless someone went to SERIOUS trouble to strip and refinish a black F2/F3 engine.

If you use Bike Bandit's online fiche you can tell what's the appropriate parts and if it will let you enter a quantity to order then that part is still available from Honda.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Interesting.
The serial number confirms its a 78F engine.
The more I look at the pictures it appears that there is no paint on the engine. It looks like bare cast aluminum. Somebody went through the work to strip all the black paint off.

That being said, how many miles are on the bike. The 78s (and I believe the 77s) where known to have accelerated valve guide wear due to the larger valves and angle.

Seeing that the engine may have been out of the frame at some point it may be a good question for the PO what engine work he did besides painting.

I wouldn't jump the gun and say that motor is not stock, may just be painted. Yes, a lot of parts are not stock, very common, most guys wanted to change them up from stock.
Good thing is the frame does not appear to be chopped so you can easily go back to stock.

Not taken the wrong way at all. I am here to learn. The owner did say that he soda blasted and repainted the engine and tank several years ago. He also said that he had a bit of an oil leak at the head gasket and he pulled the motor to paint and it and replace the gasket. He bought a cheap gasket off eBay and it leaked once he got it replaced so he parked it until he could afford to pull it again and have it done professionally. I will see when I pick it up. But for the money and it runs I am happy so far.

For $500, you got a good deal. Jerry gets a little jumpy when someone starts messing with his beloved F models!   He has one and it is beautiful, but he probably has $5000 into it! Or more, right?

Having built an Fn'K I can say with authority it's more F due to the triple disc brakes. Buuuut thare are a lot of K parts on it too.  There is a thread here for the F models and you can find some pics there to compare to. looks like a fine machine to start with. I'd get some stock type handlebars and enjoy it.

**ALERT**

**THREAD HIJACK**  :o :o :o

fishfreek contacted me after I offered to meet with him and help him sort out his new ride. Turns out he has been given six weeks to relocate to keep his job and wanted to know if I wanted to buy his latest "barn find". Had to dig deep to scrape up the funds, but it's now parked in my garage! How could I refuse? Now they're finding me!  8)

It followed me home... can we keep it?  ???  ;D

I guess fishfreek dropped out since he's now shown as "guest". I was hoping he might stick around and follow the subsequent build thread. Really nice guy, glad to hear his company can keep him working, just sorry to hear he's got to relocate.

How many builds can you have at one time? One is a handful, two would be quite the juggling act. Looking forward to it though! Although, that might be an indication that I am in serious need of some professional help...  :o ;) ;D
