Honda cb750f exhaust value/price question
« on: August 07, 2012, 05:38:59 AM »
When I bought my 1976 cb550f, it came with a 750f exhaust on it.  I don't know why the previous owner did this, but it fit and worked fine.  I've since put a stock cb550f exhaust on it and would like to sell the 750f exhaust.  It's the original 4-into-1 with the headers.  The headers and piple aren't perfect.  The headers have some surface rust on them, and the muffler has a little rust and scratches in places and a small hole in the end, but otherwise is pretty solid.  I'm just trying to gauge what it would be worth on the market if I tried to sell it.  I know these original exhausts are pretty hard to find since I had a heck of a time finding a 550f exhaust, but I can't find one online to compare it with to estimate a value.  Any help out there?

I'm just trying to gauge what it would be worth on the market if I tried to sell it.  I know these original exhausts are pretty hard to find since I had a heck of a time finding a 550f exhaust, but I can't find one online to compare it with to estimate a value.  Any help out there?
I guess it depends on which model the 750F exhaust is from. If the production quality for a 750F '75 or '76 muffler is as bad as for the CB550F muffler, they might both be in the same price range.

I have a CB550F muffler in a condition that matches your description (light rust, small hole in muffler but still solid). I would not pay more than $100 for it. If I found a really good one without scratches and holes, I'd be willing to pay up to $300 for the muffler alone, maybe $450 for NOS. But that's just me.

Good to know. Admittedly, I don't know CB750's as well. The only ones I have ever seen had original 4 into 4 exhausts on them - most likely 'K' bikes. I stand corrected.
Carry on.

I would be interested in the muffler.  Got a picture.  Everyone's idea of nice shape, or looks okay is all over the map so hard to say value but unless it's very clean it's not worth a great deal.  Like a previous poster says the quality was not that great as they rust out just looking at them.  I am in Minneapolis...close to you?

According to your description $100 - $150 max. Shipping will increase the cost greatly to a buyer. Look at prices for a new Mac 4 into 1 and you'll see why I say that. Yes it's an original but it doesn't sound to be in too good shape especially for an original bike or a restore.

4 into 1's have been used on ALL 750F's since the beginning 1/75.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I didn't think it was possible to put 750 headers on a CB550.  Aren't both pipe spacing and diameter wrong?  I expect there's something(s) bent, or they aren't 750 headers.

Well, I just went out to measure.  Port 1 to Port 4 on centers is ~13" on the 750 and ~11" on the 550.  Port diameter is about 1 1/4" on the 550.  I don't have a 750 open port to measure, but, I'm pretty certain it's bigger.

I suspect some mistaken identity is going on here.  We need pics, I think...

I was waiting for someone to say this. Unless seriously modified, a 750F header won't fit on to a 550 head. At that point you can't sell it as a 750F header because it won't fit. And for a tweaked out part that doesn't do what it was originally intended to do, it probably wouldn't fetch much $.

I, too, thought this was the case but was not sure and had not had time to do the research yet. Makes sense.

I agree, highly doubt the 750 pipe will fit on a 550 without some major tweaking.

If it will fit a 550, I may be interested.

Thank you all for chiming in.  I really appreciate it.  Sorry for the slow reply, but we're in the process of moving.  As for the questions, I think I can answer some of this.  I know the muffler is the real deal since the writing on the pipe indicates it's an authentic cb750f muffler.  However, the headers may be 550f headers and the previous owner fit a 750f pipe to it. I'm not sure as I don't know all of the specifications, but that's my guess.  I've taken some pictures to hopefully get some answers. The hole in the end of the exhaust is definitely the worst of any issues with the muffler.  I've pressed on the area all around it to see how rusted the area is, and it still seems pretty solid, but obviously it's not perfect as this hole exists.  I'll post some more in a subsequent reply as I seem limited in size.  Let me know what you folks think.

I would still be interested in the muffler.  I would look at it as a replacement so I could take off my better one to save.  I don't think it's good enough for a restoration but good enough for other needs.   You in the metro area?

Those are not 750F head pipes.. On the 750F all four pipes meet side by side where they go into the collector. Yours are stacked two on top of the other two. I'm not sure what the 550F head pipes look but it could be 550F headers with a 750F muffler. I will post a pic of my NOS 750F head pipes tomorrow.

The header in the picture is a CB550F factory header.

Like the one in the pic below:

+1 - 550F stock headers.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

To be honest, I was hoping to get around $200 for the muffler and headers, but it sounds like they're not worth that.  Considering the rarity of original parts for these old honda's, I figured it was worth that.  However, considering their condition and the fact that I have a pipe for a 750 and a header for a 550, I guess I'm feeling around $120 for the 750f muffler and $60 for the 550f headers.

Oh yeah.  For the guy in the twin cities, I currently live in St. Paul, but we are in the process of moving to Cannon Falls.  It wouldn't be a problem to meet in the middle if you were interested.

Just looked closely at the header pic, chrome is very poor on #3, I'm out.
Thanks anyway
