Thanks Dennis! I think I will get oven\engine degreaser then pressure wash... Soak in hot soapy water....... repeat step 1. I read that using the dishwasher works well too....

I ordered all new seals for the lower end thanks to Dimitri providing a link...

What shape is the engine paint in?  If it's peeling in places, yes blast as Dennis suggested. If not, clean clean clean and paint.

I think the PO spray bombed it when it was assembled still at one time. I'm going to do a hot bath in the tub I think when the wife is away tomorrow after soaking it in degreaser.

Nick, grab one of the heavy duty pullers from Gordon/ilbikes, those things are amazing. Chewbacca recently pulled his rotor that was stuck bad too, and he used the same puller. Don't waste money on the ebay pullers. I have one that I can loan you, just let me know and it will be on its way. You'll need to the engine either in a big stand, or the crank in a huge vice to get it off. You could also try to get some rust off with a wire wheel on a drill motor.

You may need a puller...............or a friend that has one...........Good to see you back at it :) :) :)

Its best to CLEAN, SOAK, CLEAN, SOAK, and CLEAN again. Soda blasting after a good degreasing is quick. Bead-blast for a nice finish..........or paint any color you want. Whatever you do...........DO NOT USE SAND OR GLASS-BEAD.  Be sure to clean every corner or pocket, including the crank, before reassembly.

Hi new to the forum, I am currently building a 1977 cb750 and I have GLASS-BEAD cabinet at the shop.  I'm curious as to why you say not to use it? I was planing on using it to clean the engine case inside and out.  Thanks for the reply.  BTW great build Tew!

There is a hazard to using glass bead media (or sand) to treat the engine cases. The particles can become trapped in very small orifices and later work their way into the gears, seals, etc and cause tremendous issue.

It's feasible to glass bead the outside of the cases, (don't know that I would do the interior anyway) but you definitely need to go the extra mile and be dead certain you've thoroughly cleaned the cases afterwards with pressure cleaning, perhaps more than once.

Probably safest to soda blast the cases, but if you're diligent, glass bead is possible too. I'd keep the pressure under 50psi and use "fine" for the coarseness grade.

Thanks will keep in mind the PSI and the use of very fine material.   Hopefully will start work next week and probably will post a build thread.  Great forum and members from what I've been reading.

You can look at mine for reference, I had my cases bead blasted and they came out pretty great

three is also an excellent write up on how to clean after blasting by Gordon/Ilbikes on this page. I plan on following that as best as I can.

Dropped off the engine cases at the engine shop yesterday.  Picked up today... He hot bathed the cases and it looks almost black. Here are a few pics. I will be picking up some etching primer and paint for the cases. Any idea what is the better of two;  VHT or Duplicator and what etching primer should I get..

I have not seen an elegant solution for the fender yet. The front ends up being wide, and any regular width fender looks out of pace. A superbike fender, however, looks also foreign and it would not fit on a 19".
I was asking because I also use the inverted front...

Well I did the VHT route. Heated the cases for 15 min at 170......Primer first...... 3 coats... 10-13 min before each coat. Then I did the engine paint from VHT.. 3 coats. First coat was applied 30 min after final coat of primer... I warmed it up in the oven for another 15 min prior to 1st paint.... 10 min in between each coat. I think it came out great but it is still early. I have it in my basement right now to cure for 7 days...

FunJimmy made his own with a fender that fit the tire and molded/laid it up out of fiberglass and carbon fiber
Check his thread.

That's interesting.  You opted to heat the cases prior to paint versus curing the paint after spraying.  Did you do a final heat cycle after the last paint application?

I'm curious about the primer, I thought crankcases didn't need it. Also, I'm guessing you have a separate oven for this? If you used the home one, how bad does it stink? I might try to sneak mine in if it isn't too bad :D

Preheating the cases helps purge impurities from the alloy and "opens" the surface for a better bond. Most powder coasters use this same technique. Obviously, Tews is a professional and knows how to get professional results!
