Hi everybody;)

I am following this forum for more then a year now. A lot of people have already helped me with info they provided in this forum. It is time for me to start sharing my project

The goal of this project is to transform Honda CB750 f2(1978) in to a Caferacer. Every major component of this build will be designed by me. I will try to make this bike look like it was made in 70', but using modern materials, manufacturing processes, design tools etc... I am trying to make uniq and recognizable design for this bike.

I will start posting already built parts, one by one:

1.Top Triple Clamp

I am using front end from GSXR 600/750 k6/k7 in the build. Like I sad the idea is to create something with retro look but with improving performance. Original top triple clamp from Suzuki gives modern square design feeling.

Top clamp is made from 6082 T6 aluminum using CNC machine.

I optimized weight of the clamp... Maybe it is to much but it will give that final touch to the clamp

Everything was designed in 3d using blueprints of Honda cb750 and Suzuki gsxr. All measurements were checked on real bikes.. Great resource for CAD parts is www.grabcad.com

Clamp is designed in a way that demands machining from top and bottom. Holding tool is made to enable machining from top and bottom.

You can see how clamp is rounded from top and the bottom. Everything is in the details

I made a pocket to hide steering nuts because I think they look ugly when they are exposed...

And then you need to have custom top nut

That is beautiful! Well done. I had to look twice to see the pinch bolt holes (in this picture: https://instagram.com/p/5J6ndqt71K). Slick.

One question: What's the offset?

Thanks. I tried to make "smooth" design with simple lines... I will post pictures with pinch bolts later.
Offset is 30mm. Fork holes 50mm

Welcome to the forum. There are many folks using modern USD forks and (many of those using) Cognitomoto clamps and hubs. You design is similar to that of Devin at Cognitomoto but has some variances, too.

Looking forward to seeing how your project comes together. Keep the pictures and posts coming.

There are two reasons for hidden steering nuts.

1.The first one is obvious. Looks;) I tried to design some kind of cover but it didn't work out.

2. The second one is not so obvious. By hiding steering nuts I will gain 10mm in fork length. I hope this will enable me to put bigger wheel in the front. I am planing to run 18" wheels. Tire for the front will be 120/60zr18. I am still not sure, but I hope this gain of 10mm will help to clear exhaust pipes

Beautiful top clamp but unfortuanatly everyone's doing the GSXR inverted fork swap these days. It's neither 70's period correct or unique. Conventional ZRX forks with Ohlins custom 30mm cartridges! Now that would be unique.

I like using the lockout that you hid so well. I have used them on stems I built before..

It will depend on small details how it will all look together. In my opinion major drawback with modern inverted forks are holders for front fender... That doesn't look good.

Thanks 754! Yea that rounded look gives the feeling of something that was made in 70'. Also rounded look increases time needed to machine clamp, because of machining needs to be done on both sides.

Looks like a Ceriani tree a bit. If you got an hourglass. Shaped cutter made, you could cut the outside profile in one setup..

From what we've seen so far, I don't think you'll have too much difficulty sorting out an awesome looking work around.

Shape is not constant if you follow contour from top view

But this was a learning process for me. Probably I could have simplified design to speed up machining process, but then the look will not end up so good

... Personally I don't like this mirror finish. At the and I fill probably use some 2000 grit to lower reflection and to make more like a matte color finish.

It's all a personal preference thing. I actually like the machined finish coming out of the CNC, too.

Weigh them if you can .. And stem.
Have made a few Aluminum. Stems from 7075.
Why did you choose 6082 for trees over 6061?
