New guy, got a few questions!
« on: January 22, 2016, 02:20:50 PM »
Hello all!

New member and my first CB. I bought this beauty

Which the PO said was a 1974. Now, the serial number on the engine is 23032XX and the frame is 23030XX these are both 1973 serial numbers correct? The title lists it as a 1974 as well. The PO said that a cycle shop had just done about 3k worth of work to it, so I'm assuming an engine swap was on the list?

Secondly the carbs look different here is a pic

And the air box has an F after the 750 ?

I feel like I have a Frankenstein bike here!  Also the PO said he used only ethanol free fuel (recreational ) can I ,or should I, not use regular unleaded gas?

Also forgive my ignorance , I am not very mechanically inclined haha, but this part looks very new.

I haven't even gotten to the troubleshooting questions yet!!!

Anyway any insight or advice anyone has is great and I appreciate it. I'm not a collector or anything just a kid who loves the SOHC big four and I plan on taking this bike around the United states at the end of this year. Thanks!

If it was made late 73 it would be (probably) be titled a 74.  The "F" - Super Sport air-box?  Might be a franken-bike, more experienced people than I will be along to chime in. I don't know the 750's that well.

In the meantime, welcome.  How's it run?

Thanks! It runs. Starts up first or second time which is nice. When it's in neutral I get a nice rattle that goes away when I grab the clutch lever, so that's on my to figure out list haha. That and I'm sure after reading a bunch on here that I need some carb work. Might sell my 341's that are on it. Might not. I'd like to move the ignition to the original location as well. Right now it's by the handlebars. I was advised by another member to do the 3000 mile checklist so I may be buying some tools here soon!

Welcome,
Its very common to have a bike sold and titled a different year than when it rolled off the line.
Dont need to assume an engine swap.
Looks like an aftermarket reg/rec.
The "F' stamped on the airbox doesnt mean anything.  They were used across many years and models.
My 78K's airbox is stamped exactly the same.
Download the shop manual here....http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/shop-manual
.....and do the 3000 mi suggested maintenance items.
$3k into a bike and these items SHOULD have been done...but dont assume anything  ;D
PO's will say anything to sell a bike

Looks good. You have a 1974 per this reference:

http://www.hondachopper.com/engine/engine_timeline/timeline.html

Secondly the carbs look different here is a pic

Different than what?

And the air box has an F after the 750 ?

All of that style airbox has an F stamped on it. It's the same airbox for all models, F and K. You won't find that style airbox with a "K" stamp.

I feel like I have a Frankenstein bike here!  Also the PO said he used only ethanol free fuel (recreational ) can I ,or should I, not use regular unleaded gas?

They can tolerate ethanol, just ride it regularly,. There are some carb kits that will dissolve in alcohol though, I've tried them (once).

Also forgive my ignorance , I am not very mechanically inclined haha, but this part looks very new.

Not sure what part you are referring to, but you do have an aftermarket, solid state regulator/rectifier there. The original voltage regulator was a mechanical relay/contact points type.

I'm planning to ride tomorrow and/or Sunday. PM me your address/phone# if you want me to drop by.

You might want to pull that fuse panel.  The wires and fuse clips can get really crusty.  Look for hot spots or melted areas on the back side.  If it shows any signs of excess heat, swap it out.   If good...polish up those clips.

Madmtnmotors: apologies, I was looking at the wrong picture of the carbs when comparing. Mine are stock haha.

Also I was using this ,from the foreword of the shop manual I received with the bike, to date the serial numbers.

Any particular cleaner I should use? Wire brush it?

Welcome...nice bike.  MadMt, as well as most the other guys, gave you good info.

That paint color is not stock for a '74, but the bike is 40 years old, who know what has been done to it?

Let me know if you want to sell that old stock exhaust.  A stainless steel header would good on there!

I will keep you in mind for the exhaust! I didn't know the 341's were worth anything, thought just the 300 was.

Also, the guy did tell me the color was wrong for the year and he thought it was a 75 color. I was hoping it would be the Polynesian blue color, but after a few more pictures it doesn't look quite right. The gold and black stickers don't line up quite right either :( the Honda emblem is almost on top of the stripes, yikes! I may be ordering a new yamiya boss maroon tank and covers to replace them haha. But that sure is a lot of money to spend on cosmetics I'll probably wait till she is tip top before making her all purdy.

The airbox: the ones for the post-1975 "F bikes (and K7/8) that fit the PD type carbs are labelled "CB750F-F", while the K1-K6 and F0 types are just "CB750F". The major difference, aside from the inlet vent(s) configuration is the holes that hold the little rubber velocity stacks that connect to the carbs: the PD carbs have bigger air bells, so the holes are bigger in the "F-F" boxes.
;)

Honestly, I wouldn't mind replacing the exhaust, since the engine and frame numbers don't match it's not worth restoring I'm sure and I am not head over heels about the 341's but it'll be a while before I'm up to the task of rejetting after replacing the exhaust. Everything seems very daunting ( and expensive ) at this stage

The F-F boxes are larger in volume too....

Dang, the more I hang out here the more I learn!  8)

I've got 2 FF boxes and a K2 box next to me at the moment, the K2 box isn't as wide as the FF boxes, the later box is nearly an inch wider {side to side} as well as higher and wider {front to back}   ;)

The airbox: the ones for the post-1975 "F bikes (and K7/8) that fit the PD type carbs are labelled "CB750F-F", while the K1-K6 and F0 types are just "CB750F". The major difference, aside from the inlet vent(s) configuration is the holes that hold the little rubber velocity stacks that connect to the carbs: the PD carbs have bigger air bells, so the holes are bigger in the "F-F" boxes.
;)

The F-F boxes are larger in volume too....

Exactly right!
They have a single, wide, across-the-bottom vent that feeds up into the lower plenum through wider side slots so there is less turbulence inside than on the early boxes. The PD carbs REALLY hate turbulence...

Clutch rattle is normal, may be lessened with a good carb sync, but these only get so quiet.
