Visiting NEW YORK City
« on: May 05, 2016, 02:10:55 AM »
Hi guys!

So..here`s the deal. I am from Bucharest, Romania and i intend to visit next month New York, from 12 to 25 june, with my girlfriend. I`m going to stay in Queens, at a friend.
When i visit a city or a country i try to discover the life of local people, to find more about their culture, habits, local food and trying to live like a local as cheap ass possible...I love cheap thrills :)))
I also like to visit the important turist objectives, like museums, point of interests and special places.

So, can you help me with information about New York, others that you can find in travels guide, like secret places, things to do, places to see and others great stuff that you recommend for me for two weeks.

I really wish to see a baseball match, an american football game and may basketball, of course at low cost tickets :)))

I would really like to rent o motorcycle, preferable a small displacement bike, even a Honda CB550/500  ;).

Anyway, i`m glad to visit America! See you there!

All the best,

Mihai (Mike)

I am sure locals will pitch in, but I always liked using the Staten Island Ferry, afaik it is free  ;D

http://www.siferry.com/

while you are at Staten Island, check out the 911 memorial.

If possible, go see a baseball game - Yankees of course - for people from Europe, that is something very American and different.

Intrepid Sea and Air Museum

World Trade Center

Brooklyn Heights

Be prepared for hot a humid weather, NYC in June is no joke.

NYC is a huge City with a lot to offer, but can be very expensive depending on what you want to do.

There will be no American football or basket in June, but baseball can be fun and tickets are cheaper. [last NFL game I went to in Dallas was costly, 1 ticket was $375 at "Jerry's World"]

If you do rent a motorcycle, get out of the City where it will be fun to ride, Bobby can give more info on this.

Have fun!

Check out some of the better shops in Williamsburg.  Seek out "Works Engineering" or Brooklyn Moto.
If you are around on a Monday night head to "Bar Matchless" to watch the MotoGP races.  A few local guys show up on all manor of cool bikes.
Also and Isle of Man winner is known to hang out too!

Find the NYCVinMoto Yahoo group.  They post about local events and get togethers.

Drive out to Long Island too.
Trip out to Montauk point is long, but well worth it.  Can go from the best city in the world to the best beaches, all in one day.

Nope. That would be August. it goes like this:

April, May = who the hell knows. topsy turvy

June = THE PERFECT MONTH. Hot, dry, not too humid

July = Hot as hell with the onset of humidity

August = unbearable heat and humidity

In terms of timing, June is the best summer month to visit. Ive lived in NYC all my life (except for having lived in London for a bit and Phoenix Arizona) and know NYC and its weather like the back of my hand.

Along with Jupiters, you can also check out motoquest.com for motorcycle rentals.  You will not likely find vintage motorcycles for rent.

You can buy Yankees' Tickets in advance  http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/ticketing/index.jsp?c_id=nyy
If you have never been to a game, try to find tickets along first or third base.

I live Greenpoint 2 blocks from bar matchless, yes great bar and great food. Affordable too, and lots of bikes.

I'll gladly take you to a Yankees game. $6-20 for tickets. Beer is $10-14 :( .  I enjoy bringing my own spirits via a plastic flask.

Staten Island ferry is free
Nyc transit museum is $5 and amazing
One subway fair is $2.75, not sure what the unlimited are these days.
Cheap for: you can do as the cabbies do. $1 slice(pizza) it's just alright by New York standards or a topical slice place is $2.25-2.75 now a days, worth it. I recommend joes in Manhattan on carmine and 6th Ave. In Williamsburg, Tony's or across the street Carmine's. You can decide what's better.

Take the 6 train to the last downtown stop and stay in the train and you will see the old city hall station.
There is mcsorleys ale house on east 7th been around since 1854 or something like that. 2 types of their own beer and you order 1 they give you 2 at $5 for the pair.

REMINDER!: TIP $1 a drink. 18-20% food  10%taxi.

Let me know when you arrive.

I remember staying in a hotel, I believe it was NY Hilton Midtown - company send me to a conference - and from the room window I could see a vendors stand that had about 60 people waiting inline at 1AM - you know, people who work nights in NYC, guards, cops, cab drivers, sweepers.

So I decided to try that food, it was some kind of a mid east spicy stuff, excellent, still remember it.

That said, dont be afraid to explore new things, New York is great.

Ah yes! Street meat.  And yes there are plenty of little affordable gems all over the city.  Right near time square there is sake bar hagi. http://irohagroup.com/  fun weird little dishes you can try.

Also go to Chinatown get dim sum anywhere.  2 other good spots are pho bang and "tasty hand pulled noodle"

W  and Trench are in perfect spots to give you advice since Brooklyn and Queens have made a big turnaround. A lot of young people have moved there and excellent bars have opened. Citifield is right there in Queens where the NY Mets play. A Mets or Yankee's game will be good baseball.

North of the City is the Hudson Valley which is quite beautiful. If you do rent a bike there are great roads in some of the State Parks including Bear Mountain which has a narrow twisty road to the top. From there you can head up to Storm King mountain which has a very twisting road to the top.  Right there is West Point the US Military Academy.

Further North you will find Newburgh NY and visit motrocycleipedia Museum. I think Orange County Choppers is still open. Lots to see and do in the New York City area.

This showed up in my inbox today, 67 things to do for free in NYC.

 http://www.jetsetter.com/feature/things-to-do-for-free-in-new-york?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily&utm_term=20160515_vJD_SUNJ_np&utm_source=jetsetter&DG=3a68a769-b107-441d-8b0d-e822874dad56&nl_id=156492

That is one heckuva long link, I hope it works.

And no, I'm not a jet setter, and I've never been to NYC (exc a stormy stop at LaGuardia), so I can't vouch for anything on this list.

Go visit this place: https://lartedelgelato.com, my favorite gelato in the US. I also recommend: S'mac http://www.smacnyc.com/ which specializes in that American comfort food staple, macaroni and cheese. Finally, head to the financial district and take the Staten Island Ferry over to Staten (it's free) and grab an Uber or Lyft to Denino's for pizza: http://deninossi.com/

We're house swapping for a quaint little joint on Roosevelt Island in the beginning of August. Loving the must do suggestions but not the weather forecast.

Mihai, when you're down here and if you want to get a SOHC4 ride together, PM me. I'm about 1.5 hours away and love to come down with a couple friends.

You should probably check out the Museum of Modern Art and the Natural History Museum. Fun spots. I also like The Highline Park on the west side. It's a board walk, garden, park thing build on an old elevated rail way. Gives you a cool, different perspective of the city.
http://www.thehighline.org/visit

Also, ride the subway system. Cheap and quick. Don't be afraid to ask people for directions. When I've visited and lived in Europe many Europeans say that New Yorkers are very polite. Kind of a weird thing to hear but that's their impression.
