that I can fit two GL 1200's in my 6x12 enclosed trailer!


 I have been looking for a Goldwing project for some time. While scouring the local craigslist for a pit bike, I found a pair of Goldwings for $500 ($250 each) which fell in the price range I was using for my pit bike search. Now these might be a bit large for pit bike duty so once I get one of them running I'll access its suitability from there.      


 Both bikes are mostly complete. The red one had already had the bodywork and bags removed and most of it rode home in the back of the SUV. Good thing the red one had been partially disassembled since I don't think two fully equipped full dressers would have fit. Now I just have to shuffle some CB750's around to make room for the new Wings!

The back story I got was:

"The red one was his daily driver up until he got a deal on the gold one about six years ago. Drove the gold one up until about two years ago until the clutch quit working" (master cylinder I believe). The craigslist ad read "wife says either her or the bikes". 

Sound familiar Jerry?   

I think I can get the gold one running without much drama, but both will likely get the "frame off" treatment eventually. Some cracked plastic to address, hydraulics, suspension, oil seals, electrical, carbs, etc... same treatment any neglected vintage bike would receive.

In 1982, while attending a training class, I met a fellow named Charlie Brown (honest!) who was a dyed-in-the-wool Goldwing fan. He had logged something like 250K miles on his first one, and was approaching that on his second. He planned to retire soon, and spend even more time touring with his wife. I was impressed!
Charlie is the guy in the center-rear of the pic; the one that resembles Andy Devine.
Care to guess which one is me?

Jerry got it! The guy at the far left front row was Chris, from Hugo, CO. Remember, that pic was only 35 years ago; 42 years ago (actually 43 years ago) I looked like this:

Let me know what you need! 

First, I would like the center-to-center distance of the caliper bracket to fork mounting bolts. Second, if there are twin piston calipers, which it looks like the gold one may have, check the c-t-c of the caliper to bracket bolts. Also, look to see if the piston size is stamped into the caliper body.

Scott, there are two bracket lengths but I believe that while there were two versions of the caliper, one with 30mm pistons and another with 32mm pistons but same caliper bodies. The short bracket was used on the GL500I models and they had dual calipers, but the fork diameter and design wasn't much better than the original CB design.  The GL1000 ,+ models were a better fork design for the day of course.
