Completed build threads
« on: June 04, 2017, 05:12:25 AM »
After some discussion, we'll give this a try. This is a place for completed builds. Yes, I know....they're never really finished, right?
But once you're past the "Project" phase and into the "Riding and finessing" phase, feel free to link your thread here.

Some loose and possibly evolving rules:

 - Post some Before and After pics. Keep it to, say, 2-4 pics total and use a photo hosting site.
 - Give a brief description. Year, make model, short back story (just a sentence or two), maybe a list of major mods or work done. No need to say " I put on new tires and sprayed carb cleaner through the carbs", but if you have an in-depth, photo and information heavy section in your build thread documenting the carb rebuild, then mention it. Or engine rebuild, suspension swap, etc.
 - A link to the actual build thread.
 - Ask that technical questions or build specific questions be directed to the build thread. Comments are OK, but we don't need three pages asking about a mono-shock conversion when it's covered in detail in the build thread.

In a bit of shameless self promotion (  8) ) I'll use my build as an example:

1973 CB500 barn find. CB550 engine, custom exhaust, R6 front end swap, Lester mags, Speedhut gauge.

Can a few others give it a shot, follow the template, make suggestions, etc. ?
This thread DOES NOT need to turn into a question and answer thread. If you have questions about a specific bike, part or modification, please click the link and ask in the BUILD thread.

Here's my summary: Inspiration Struck one night watching The Terminator, original idea was to build clone of that bike. Started lurking on these forums, ran into Jerry H's awesome K2 build thread and decided it simply HAD to be a full resto. Ended up turning into a nearly complete NOS bike. Learned several new skills, everything detailed in my Build Thread along with Detailed Pix

How it was delivered to me

What it (still) looks like today, thanks to these nice folks

Here's one of mine:

In an ultimately fruitless attempt to engage my wonderful wife into the world of vintage motorcycles, I set out to restore a 1977 CB400F, but done up as a 75. I found a local-to-me unfinished project that purportedly had a rebuilt engine and carburetors and dug in. This project eventually included complete restoration of the entire motorcycle, including the carburetor and engine, plus steering head and swingarm bearings that were also advertised as "restored". Had the misfortune of going up against one of Tige Eakin's amazing builds in BOTM voting, but was consoled by the bike winning best Japanese Bike in the largest vintage motorcycle show in Arizona. It would still be in pieces without a ton of assistance and parts and advice I received from the denizens here.

New brakes, lines, MC rebuild
New rims, spokes, tubes, tires
New tank and sidecovers, fenders
Racetech'ed fork, repro shocks
New steering head bearings, swingarm bushings
New wheel bearings
NOS wiring harness
Repro seat, fenders
New or repainted or restored or NOS or repro everything else :-)

No build thread, brief description of my CB750K6 -76 project back to life

My bike ended up in a much longer project as intended.
I was sure that I had rather clear plan what needed to do after the bike has been stored in a barn since 1990, to my garage sept 2009.

I was completely wrong!
I had no thoughts about all nice restorations and modification I should see and read about here on these forums.
Plus all very skilled and interested guys that brings tons of information. It is dificult to stop modding the bike! ;) I have parts for another project, a K2-75. I have also some NOS parts for my K6. Maybe too good to be used, Seat, fenders, tacho&speedo, bar around seat, rear lamp + new replica parts for OEM looking front-end.

I pulled engine 2010 when I was curious about the status. Project started 2012 when I started to work with the engine.
The entire bike apart spring 2013 when frame has to be sandblasted and painted 2k black. Engine together summer 2013 and bike  completed fall same year, first version.

2014: Bike on the road
I spent long time with various problems never seen before on this bike, carb tuning with all problems possible, ignition caused by new Dyna wire with intermittent function and old front brake.

Tested different cams. Bike has frame kit so change cam is easy.
There are several replacements and improvements thanks to this forum, such as relays, Pamco with short lived coils, Dyna-S ignition with Dyna 5 ohm coils finally replaced by Points and Hondaman ignition module still Dyna coils..

2015: All intitial problems solved, IKON shocks replaced the old Marzocchi and new carbs. Better body set in Freedom Green Metallic under a short time soon replaced by a new set in Candy Sapphire Blue and finalized that year with 4-4 exhaust HM300 replica.
More cam tests during the season.

2016: More engine impovements with less time on the street 2016. Dual front brakes. Began the engine rebuild earlier with balanced and lightened crank with Carillo rods,

2016-2017: JMR Billet block with 71.25mm pistons (1005cc), head job (again) now with 5mm valve kit, still 34mm in valves and additional fine porting. Stronger starter motor (CB900).

Some photos of how bike looked when I brought it home and each year of progress. I should have started a build thread if I knew how much I should work and change. That thread should be very long and with hundreds of photos.

Edit: Added the barn photo before taking it out into the sunshine and washing it. The dust is mostly chicken #$%*.

My 2nd CB500F purchased 2010 for $200.
Had already spent three days cleaning it and had also replaced some of the missing parts when these 'before' photos were taken - I didn't know I had taken these, I just found them today!

Still needs the silver frame repainted black and the black barrels silver amongst other things to be finished.

Here's my Patina Hyena cafe build. For the full build thread see the link in my signature.

1978 CB550k bought in October 2013. It technically ran but hindsight says I should backed away slowly. Got it running and found a piece of a gear dog in the oil. After a full tear down and rebuild with a pain in the ass carb issue it ran beautifully. I think it was Don or Cal or one of those jerks who mentioned that the 79-82 650 drops right in. Bought an '82 CB650 motor and sent it to MReick to work his magic.

Stage 2+ port job
Bore to 674cc
Dynoman 10:1 pistons
Megacycle 126-20 cam
CR26 Special carbs
Stainless 4-2-1 Hindle exhaust
Aluminum rear sprocket
All LED light

Putting out 70hp to the wheel.

1978 cb550 k bought Jan. 22 and essentially completed June 22.

Nothing special bike wise.  Just cleaned up a bunch.  Unseized #1.  New parts where needed.  Rebuilt carbs.  Paint.
What was special was the advice and assistance from SOHC members making this first-timer's project a great summer rider.
So much fun to ride.

I picked up my CB550 as an unfinished mess from Craigslist.  I don't think anything remains from the original owner except the rear wheel and tire.  Aside from some machine work, I completed everything on my own with the help of these forums and its awesome members.

Here is my CB750K8 - literally started as a basket case (in Tupperware bins)!  Rebuilt the engine with an 836 kit, took the frame down to bare metal, chopped and welded, rebuilt suspension - lowered front fork tubes (Cycle X) and Progressive springs/custom Hagon rear shocks/springs, new master cylinder and rebuilt brakes, first attempt at paint (MINI Moonwalk Grey), and a Tuffside seat.  Lots and lots of other stuff that just keeps on piling on - so as mentioned, it isn't ever really finished (just put a new Charlie's ignition in).  I'm really enjoying riding it now!

Yes the paint came out very nice and I agree it does look just like the 79 CBX color. I had one in that red and it was a fun bike, wish I never sold it.

Hi

Need a little help with this postential purchase.

Looking at this CB750 and wanted to know if anyone has knowledge of the frame.

Is it a straight bar under the seat or would it need chopping and welding / fabrication ?

Any help would be great.

Thanks alot
