Topic: What strainer for my '76 CB750F

I noticed reserve/main on my fuel tank didn't really seem to make a difference, so I took the petcock out and found that there was no strainer installed. I did some searching, and a seller on e-bay stated Honda strainer #16952-341-671 would fit a '76 CB750F.

So I purchased the strainer kit. I started assembling it, and it fit the petcock perfectly. However it's not even remotely close to being able to fit into the tank. The strainer itself is just too large a diameter. Does anyone know what strainer I need for this bike?

Any pics of the tank and the "bung" for the petcock? The tank may not match the bikes year, much like mine when I bought it.

Make sure the old strainer is removed too. They tend to be difficult to remove after 40 years. Shine a flashlight (not a lighter!) into the tank through the filler neck and see if the old strainer is still in there.

That’s the correct part number for a 76 F model. Post a picture of the tank and petcock.

Here's a picture of my petcock. The tank looks just like any other SOHC 750F tank I've seen. I was thinking that maybe I had a 77-78 tank. But I read that those used a smaller threaded fitting? The strainer kit I ordered came with a new nut for the petcock, and it threaded perfectly onto my tank. So I believe my tank is the correct year..

How thick should the walls of the petcock threaded fitting be? Mine appeared to be almost 2mm thick, like it were an aluminum casting or something.

Looks normal to me. The strainer is a tight fit but it should work just fine. Correct part number. And correct tank.

Sounds like the old strainer is still in the hole but also I remember there being a brass stand pipe on the petcock that can fall out or be removed, without that there will be no reserve

I know someone who was riding his snowmobile and stopped to take a peak in his gas tank to see how much fuel he had ....... with a lit cigarette in his mouth. It didn't end well.

The strainer on this petcock has the reserve thing molded into the plastic. The petcock itself just has two holes with a gasket the strainer presses against. There is definitely no strainer in the tank, but maybe the base of the strainer somehow broke off and is stuck in the petcock?

Hey guys, I took the tank off again today to get a better look. There is just no possible way for this strainer to ever fit in there. There is no old petcock in there. The whole threaded fitting is just thick solid steel.

Anyone have any idea? Do I have the right strainer? Do I need an earlier or later one to get it to work? I took some measurements, and my threading fitting is about 20mm OD, but the hole for the strainer to pass through is maybe 8.5mm diameter. It seems that somehow my tank's fitting is threaded for a '76, but filter hole is sized for a '77+.

That’s why I always try to remind anyone I advise to peer inside the tank. Easy to forget you are dealing with a tank for storing explosive fuel and vapors.

Did you mean “old strainer”?

Did you look at the petcock opening through the filler neck to confirm that there is no obstruction in the petcock opening?

It looks like there is a tube with a flange shoved inside the outlet nipple.  Clean up the bottom of the tube and see if something is shoved in there.

I've been trying, but whatever it is, it's in there good. I've been trying to drill it out as well, but it's tough.

On closer inspection it looks like someone used JB weld to seal it in.  Careful drilling will remove it.  Be sure all gas vapors are out of tank!!!  Drill slowly and be careful if the drill catches.  You don't want to rip the bung from the tank.

There's no JB weld holding it, just looks like that on the picture. It's definitely a large steel slug someone has pressed into the bung. Considering I just finished painting the tank, I'm thinking I probably don't want to find out why it's in there. I think my best bet will be to either find a bike that uses the same size bung but a smaller strainer or run no strainer and live with not having a reserve.

Well I was able to find an aftermarket petcock on ebay that has the 20mm 1.5mm nut, but uses the smaller diameter strainer the later bikes and the 750K used. I think that's my "safest" route, rather than finding out if drilling this steel pipe out will make my tank start leaking gas every where.

You could also run my method... no strainer but just the pipe to trigger reserve. Also have to be careful of where I fill the tank at the pump. Dont want to knock it loose
