Im in Greensboro, NC and it started snowing a little after midnight and so far looks like we have about 4" on the deck. They say it's suppose to do this all day so I would expect we might see a foot or better of the white stuff. So nothing else to do today except to watch it snow and hang out here on the forum ;)

At least that far south you have a good chance of it melting soon. Be safe and warm. We got 15" of wet snow a couple weeks ago, I could barely push it with my lawn tractor. Then it rained for two days. The good news is our new roof passed the wet snow and ice dam test.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Myself, I don't envy those of you, who get a lot of snow or super frigid temps. As for whatever snow we might get, here in Arkansas, fluctuates from none, to a little, to, on rare occasion, 4-6". But, usually we get some low temps (granted, not as low as you folks up North), with occasional minus wind chill factors. We were forecasted to "Frozen Wintry Mix" with an accumulation of about 2". But, that never happened. But anyway, The temps are enough, to shut me down (at my age, I don't handle cold as easily as I use to). Worse I ever saw, as far as snow, was when I was stationed at Misawa AFB in Northern Japan. It snowed quite a bit, of the time, from around Sept to Feb or so, the 2 yrs I was there. And, the worse part was, if your tires, on your motorcycle, could not make direct contact, with the road, you were not allowed to legally get out on your motorcycle & they would take action, if you were caught out on motorcycle, on snow or ice covered roads. I have been known, as far back as when I was a teen, to get out on the snow covered roads, with no problem.  ;)

I'm older and looking at retirement soon, and the cold is something that I've grown to hate.  As soon as we can, we're out of Illinois and headed to the south-west.  Can't be soon enough.  If you like the snow, that's fine, but for me, no thanks.

On my back deck I measured 9". Its been a light freezing rain all night. Been lucking having not lost power nor my neighbors around me either. My boss sent me a text yesterday saying we would be closed on Monday. That's a miracle in itself. All the years past snow storms I can't remember them not being open and want all the employees to come in and than several hours later will close down and send us back home. I wouldn't think they would be without power but you never know. The local news says that their are over 124000 in NC without power and over 7000 in Greensboro.

I saw on the news last night about the substantial power outages. Good thing you still have your power.

I of course look at you guys with a jaundiced eye. The first thing here is as mentioned the snow and ice dam test, second making sure the alternate source of heat is Ok, third alternate source of power is working, forth Med's are topped up, fifth booze and food supplies are at optimum, sixth the small dirt bike you been farting with for just such an occasion stars and runs ok, then you are left with the happy experience of a snow day, so throw another log on the fire, have another toddy, cook, or take small bike out and practice slipping and sliding and falling off with out hurting yourself (FUN) Here we know there are going to be days when you don't go out on the roads period and if some higher authority (boss, God, woman) what ever wants you to, find a new one, that's why I never saw the need of an all wheel drive car if it's bad enough out to need it's use, you shouldn't be on the roads causing grief for emergency types (Cops, Firemen, Ambulance). #$%* even the Ontario government realizes that you need a plan, and a kit to use every once in awhile.  ( they come out and tell you that occasionally) It's part of living that's why an electric oven with a gas range and a wood stove, maybe if problems are common a generator for fridge, freezer, sump pump. I think you southerners have gotten soft. Here it's not so much prepping as the realization if nature says you are a grease spot you'd better be ready, or you will be a grease spot.
Not really a rant but it's over

Living in Buffalo, I understand Demon78’s reply. I have a fireplace insert. 5 facecord of wood. I also have a whole house generator, 12k. Plus 5 rifles, and lots of ammo. Lol. You never know what nature will throw at you. Take care.

As further thought it looks like the weather is going to get rougher over the next while, so you have to be on top of your game, I used to love the desert and the mountains around the San Gabriels and Apple Valley and wanted a place in that area but no more, same as a place on the Fraser river other than there's too many people now, these places are subject to disasters, why  have to screw with insurance companies.

I used to live in Apple Valley; actually about halfway between AV and Lucerne Valley, and about 5 miles south of hwy 18, up on the side of the mountain at 4100'. One afternoon, it started snowing, so before I left home to report for my 4:00- midnight shift in Victorville, I packed some heavy boots and warm clothing, as well as tire chains.
When I got off work, there was about 4-5" of snow on the roads, so I put the chains on my two-wheel drive Toyota in the parking lot at work. By the time I turned off hwy 18, the snow was 8"+ deep, and got deeper as I climbed above the valley floor. I could only get within a mile from home, as the front bumper of the truck was ramming the snow into a barrier. I had to hike the last mile home through 18" of snow, with quarter sized snowflakes bouncing off my eyeballs. It was 4 days before I was able to drive all the way home. ;D

Ah yes I used to practice on Azusa Canyon rd-San Gabriel canyon to Angles Crest before the quake that shut it off, mind you I just googled a map to remember which way I would go, Holy Jesus it's grown up now, there wasn't many people then in 64-65. Balls! I'm old.

Scottly, I'm guessing that was around the winter of 77 or 78. I have seen snow that year all the way from Mammoth to the bottom of Cajon pass.

Bill that Azusa Canyon run up to Crystal lake was always a fun one, that was one of our favorite Summer night rides.

Jgger It was to! On the way back down you could imagine you were at the IOM TT. at the time I had a Super Hawk with a Dust Bin on it and the bike had a larger counter shaft sprocket it would do the "Ton" easily on the way down, good and scary times, I'm sure that some of the cage drivers had fit's when they spotted me.

I used to not mind it too much when we could do fun stuff like this with the kids. The photo is a tube track I used to make for them in the back yard. Now the kids are grown and I’m in agreement with the others above. I’m tired of cold weather and snow and spend my winters dreaming of retiring somewhere warmer.

I will say this, the guy who lives in Buffalo has got us all beat. The lake effect snow that pounds upstate New York is relentless. I spent a little bit of time up that way for work. There was still about 2 feet of snow on the ground in mid April. Winter is hardcore in that vicinity.

Bill,
I don’t know how you guys do it. We can get some brutal coastal storms here in the winter but it doesn’t compare with the winters up in the lakes region. Hearty souls up that way.

Took a 10 mile ride today on the 750 hot rod. I have been struggling with fuel starvation on this bike and have it finally sorted out. Home built petcock with screen in tank and wide open 1/4 " line with no additional filters. FINALY!

45º and sunny in Milwaukee today! El Ninio weather pattern predicted for us this winter. I may be able to ride every month!!
