Scammers
« on: December 01, 2020, 09:12:31 AM »
So many scammers these days they are wearing my azz out. Faceboook marketplace is flooded with cheap scam motorhomes and bikes. Our phone rings every day with someone trying to get our information one way or another. Some zero post guy e mailed me about a wanted ad on here. Of course I'm more cynical than ever and didn't even reply. Later I saw a heads up about the same thing using a different name. Send the money to my friend etc.
I even got scammed on a stock 4-4 exhaust from a guy affiliated with folks on here. His friend here refunded my money and hopefully recovered parts from the guy to get square.
Sexy woman pics on facebook and instagram wanting to be a friend. Messenger messages that I never open because they're always a virus. etc.
Anyway, what I wanted to share is if you see a deal on marketplace, search that description and quite often it will appear in multiple cities at different prices and the dealer will be a new facebook page with no posts. Often they use the same email address. The location map will be an existing business not affiliated with the ad.

My website gets hacked, on average, 2-3 times each day since it moved overseas. Really annoying, need to build a new one in a new server, I guess?
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

There is some weird stuff going on. Today I got an email (not a message through here) from a forum member asking me “what I sold him a month ago?”. Deleted immediately and sent him a PM. Waiting to hear back..... I bet it wasn’t him.

Here's a dumb question, should someone be able to see your e mail address or are they sending a PM and then deleting the part of it that shows here?  A zero post guy replied to my part wanted ad with an email and no PM here. I don't respond to zero post guys in the ads.

Have you guys notified a moderator about any of this?  There are 2 different threads going on this topic, but you can't expect the mods to be reading all threads, especially in the open forum.

I got a call from an orthopedic medical office asking if I was still having back or knee pain. My wife thought it was my doctor and called me to the phone. I could hear lots of background noise and an obvious accent. This one had me listening for a few moments.  I resent the constant intrusions into my life trying to separate me from my money. This phone is the land line and is still in the phone book so I guess it's inevitable until we disconnect it.

Yeah, got a phony phone call an online shopping charge.  Even kept a transcript copy from a social security scammer.

But did you know; the department of homeland security has categorized job search scams in with human trafficking?!

I really did learn a lot in Arizona.  Thanks, I hated it.

Scammers got my wife's email addy from a hacked online seller. She's reluctant to give up her E mail address so every few weeks I have to look at phony charges trying to elicit a response by clicking on their e mail and giving information.

I'll mess with the scam caller every now and then. My favorite is the "your social security number has been suspended due to suspicious activity, the police are on their way to arrest you".

Me: Oh my, that sounds serious...
Scammer: It IS serious!
Me: Which address did you send them to? My address in Malibu? My address in the Hamptons (next to JW)? My address in Palm Beach?
Scammer: They've been sent to your location!
Me: Do you think they would like a cold beverage when they arrive?

If the scammer hasn't gone off on a cussing tirade by this point, usually referring to him as "Rajesh" or "Habib" often does the trick.  :o  ;D

Sorry I couldn't muster the East Indian accent in my post...

Here's something I posted earlier today for the phone calls. Makes you think you could have the starving cold dog type donation commercials for the people who have to  work at an Indian Call Center sweatshop and rescue them for the $2 a day.

As much as you may have declared surrender to the barrage of cold calls for extended automotive warranties, you should consider making them your entertainment as you waste their time. Play along with them until your opportunity to tell them you are wanting to extend your 1929 Packard's coverage.

As a matter of fact I just got off the phone with Lana, who called from what sounded like an Indian staffed call bank in Wilmington, North Carolina from 910-254-4044. She said that she was from the "medical department."

I had trouble understanding her heavy Punjab accent. But I gleaned that she wanted to know about my cancer bout. After some discussion about never having cancer she convinced me to agree with her diagnosis. I said Yes, I had had cancer , but it was a long long time ago.

Then she asked what kind of cancer I had. I said yes, cancer. Cancer type of cancer. She pressed harder, and I logically surmised for her that "It must be brain cancer because I cannot remember any fcuking thing."
EDIT: The spoofed number is owned by some electrical contractor..

A couple of comments.

For those who have received scam email through this site, always report it to the moderators and we'll remove the offending account.  That won't solve the issue of some scammer having your email, but there is something that you can do in your profile to keep it from happening again.  Under your account settings, uncheck "Allow users to email me".  The forum software has a questionable default setting where that option is selected when someone creates an account, so your email address is displayed in your profile by default.  I can globally uncheck that option for all members, but it requires some manual changes to the database.  In the meantime, I have disabled the ability of guests and new members (< 2 posts) from seeing member profiles.

For Hondaman and anyone else who has suffered a website hack, I used to spend a lot of time fighting off hacks of the www.sohc4.net site.  I moved the site to squarespace for a time and had no issues with hacks.  Since I wasn't using many of the features of squarespace, I took it a step further and moved to using a static site - once it is published, the site cannot be changed without being republished, so there is no way for a hacker to change the code unless they have stolen my administrative credentials.

Hi Glenn..
I got  an unusual "hack" on my phone answering machine today.  Guess similar to the email scams others have received. The hackers left a voice message (sounded pre-recorded) saying that I needed to contact them to get it straightened-out.  They used my SOHC4 password to address me.  This is the only website where I use that password BTW.
As others here..over the past week or so..and as Scottly said..I've also not been able to read the open boards notifications w/o logging-in first..(which I just delete..then go to regular SOHC4 forums..log-in and read).
Seems like someone or some group has got our website log-in info..and is trying to exploit it(?)
Please check into it further..let me (us) know what you find-out.
