My wife has a few different older friends who wintered together at a park in Fort Myers and its looking like their homes are gone/destroyed. The whole park is pretty much demolished. Sad.

I have Family there but they live in the SE part of the State, but Del Ray Beach did have a tornado with some major damage.

Turns out my sister [and brother-in law] were on an RV trip out of state so they have just extended they trip before heading back home.

I also have a buddy that lives in Naples, he hasnt responded to my message yet.

It couldn’t have been worse for Fort Myers and Sanibel. Thank goodness our snowbirds here have not yet flown but status of winter home is unknown and likely ruined.

Coastal areas really take the brunt of the storm. The wall of water in the form of storm surge usually causes the most loss of life. Being in the East central part of the state I am surprised we weren't more impacted by the storm, especially since the eye passed about 20 miles South of us. We have some standing water in the yard and we never even lost power. My condolences to those more seriously affected.

Add to that the fact that weathermen SUCK. Strom track was much further North since no one would recognize the proven track record of the European model (which consistently tracked near Ft Myers) until about 36 hours before landfall, which left many wondering WTF? Continued building along coastal, and low lying flood prone areas, further exacerbates the problem.

Pretty wild to see boats strewn all over the place, some homes destroyed and others nearby looking good. Considering the flooding it may not mean much for those still standing. The damage seems mostly limited to very near the shore line, inland doesn't look so bad. I suppose that's to be expected as these storms quickly lost energy after hitting land. Up here in the mid Atlantic it's just the way it is, anyone buying property near the shore knows the risk. Flooding and storm surge even inland given all the tidal bays and rivers, but nothing like directly on the coast.In any event, careful buying vehicles from FL for the next year or two. Golden window to save them is now, but logistically challenging to clean all that salt off and disassemble, treat, etc. given the immediate needs of people and lack of access.

Very wild video that shows the boats all piled up on the shore, it tells a tale of a huge storm surge that just picked them up and deposited them along the shoreline.

One reporter summed it up nicely by explaining that the higher end houses on Sanibel Island did not suffer much damage as they are much better built to withstand most hurricanes.  One before and after satellite photographs showed some vintage cottages that were just wiped clean from the storm. 

It's a little depressing, I have been to Sanibel and is one of my favorite destinations in FL, it will never be the same.

I went to school by Cape Kennedy in the 70s and do not remember any major storms during those years. I attribute the latest rash of storms to global warming, kind of hard to deny the science. my high school friends who still live ther have had do live through a lot of large storms since i nleft foer the Navy,

I'm a true Floridian. I have been in many Hurricanes. There is 3 things to say about it.

1. Welcome to Florida!
2. That's the price of Paradise.

12 days out and we only have scouting reports from the park: no power, no water, 600 units immersed to the roof, newer elevated units immersed to countertops, all likely totaled. Photos show exterior mostly intact and on foundation. Interior remediation not started. No reports of any lives lost, Florida and Lee county are not sharing much info, only that they are older and have drowned.

 The winter resident in FMB and our person most affected has been dodging this bullet for 40+ years and is taking it very well. She has had a wonderful time, many friends, and is grateful for her time in SWFL.
