Thank you all for the birthday wishes! It’s been one of the best yet

The heat wave temps of last week were long gone and it wasn’t long before my t-shirt and leather jacket combo were not enough and I was freezing as I rode up from Boston to Ludlow VT via backroads as the temps dropped and the skies turned gray.

Then there were the dirt roads I found myself on (Sign at the start: Not maintained beyond this point) and unsurfaced regular roads - lots of road works- the last one 20 miles and quite muddy in places.

Finally as crossed into VT it rained for the last 20 miles on an unsurfaced muddy road. Of course I didn’t bring my rain trousers

But the destination was worth it…

Stopping half way for coffee to warm up

One of the easier dirt roads

Final destination: a 120 year old former governors mansion

And this ones for Per - dinner:

Hopefully it will be sunny and warm on Sunday

Ready for the weekend trip and to celebrate my 50th birthday

I turned 50 seventeen years ago and it seems like last week.  That means next week I'll be 84.

Happy Birthday, Andy.  Looks like you celebrated it right.

Thank you Greg! I have to say it has been one of the best birthdays for a variety of reasons. I was lucky enough to share it with the K4 that spent the weekend riding up to Ludlow VT on  a mix of dirt and road and then the return journey was a lot of dirt roads through VT then a high speed return to Boston on Rt 2. I am constantly amazed that the CB750 can do it all so well after 47 years.

Here is to many more rides in the coming years for all of us!
cheers
Andy

This weekend at the Gilmore Museum Motorcycle Weekend. The green 750K in the first picture belongs to Ekpent and the orange 750F in the 2nd picture is Sean Barney's bike. I had a great day Saturday. The weather was beautiful and got a couple of nice rides around the Kalamazoo. MI countryside sandwiched by the ~ 3hour rides to and from Chicago-Kzoo.

The ride home was beautiful on the Blue Star highway, an old 2-lane that runs along the Lake Michigan Shore parallel to Interstate 196. But I was so tired (I hit the road about 6am CST to make the 10am EST group ride) and ready to get home that I didn't stop for any pictures. About 7 hours and 450 or so total miles of riding Saturday.

might try removing the roughly spherical top portion of your body that contains most of your sensory perceptors from the cleft between those two big fleshy protuberances lol...no seriously, the Gilmore Classic Motorcycle show is only once a year but the roads that make it fun to ride are good anytime.  Come on up anytime.  Let me know when you do.

Happy Birthday Andy, I remember when I was 50, it seems like only yesterday, or maybe the day before, I don't remember which? Hey do you use a blue tooth ear plug so you can listen to your iPhone(?) GPS? I have hearing aids, which are a PITA and I rarely use them, but one good thing is that they allow me to use my iPhone "Hands free" (it's illegal to use a cell phone while driving here unless it's "hands free", i.e., you can't hold your phone while driving or riding) which is handy (no pun intended) at times. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

On my 50th birthday I watched the Columbia launch from Cocoa Beach but it didn't make it back down, Terry you can work it out from there
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thank you Terry I appreciate it. Just glad to have survived this far  8)

I use a helmet com - cheap one from Ebay that has worked surprisingly well -pairs to the phone for incoming calls (surprisingly clear and microphone is very good - most people cant tell I am riding a bike: full face helmet), plays music (for me only for those boring highway sections or in slow moving traffic - not on need-to-focus-backroads), GPS directions. Here is a link to what I got:

https://www.joom.com/en/products/1506771837110162683-237-1-709-4078479247

I now have 3 of these - one for each helmet - basically I got 2 for free due to a shipping error. Anyway they all work similarly.

The phone pictured on my bike is an old phone now only used for GPS. I learned the hard way that phones on bikes dont work - the vibrations end up ruining the camera. So now I have my current phone in my pocket and the old one on the bike.

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy, and that's good to know about the damage a phone can suffer from vibration etc. I've just remembered that my newest Nolan helmet has the facility for installing their bluetooth system, I'll have to go and look in the box for the brochure and see what I need to buy, on longer rides it'd be good to listen to some music via my iPhone.

I just need to remember not to sing along with the music when I'm sitting at the lights, like a guy I saw on a BMW K1100LT once, he was definitely no Frank Sinatra...... ;D

I've had to drive home before with no clutch. Shifting wasn't a problem but I had to time up a couple of stop lights so I didn't have to come to a complete stop ! Still possible with a starting roll and a snick into first but not pleasant or safe.

I had a clutch cable that looked good at a fast glance. For some reason I had to remove it from the lever and when I did a bunch of broken strands popped out of the cable bundle, broken just below the barrel. Close call! I’m saving this cable for emergency use.
