Ok, so I have some "updates".

Rebuilt my "300" marked advanced, had a bit more advance than the "328" one I had.  Also, I need to list almost an entire other engine for sale, so let me know if you need anything!!

I got the frame kit installed!!  I'll post some pictures soon.  I ran into my own problems, being a dumbass and not closing up the threaded holes, so some welding splatter made me have to chase all the threads!! Very frustrating!!  After this, I welded up the "u's" on the downtubes, going up the tubes like I was told!!  I have almost all the mods done to the frame, just need to finish up the Rear electrics tray.  Then I'm considering getting the frame blasted just so I don't have to sand the WHOLE frame!!

So, Mike talked me into some work on my head.  So my head "checklist" will include: some porting, Serdi valve job, bronze valve guides, new versa valvesc new valve seals, slightly used kibblewhite springs and a .010" decking.  This with a 41 hardweld cam with adjustable sprocket, 4th over pistons and PD carbs, I think I should have quite a fun bike!!!

Ok, so another small update.  After struggling with the top bolt on one of the fork tubes, I got my gl1000 front end torn apart, ready for cleaning/painting and reassembly when the race tech stuff gets in!

Other than that, it was a somewhat uneventful day in the garage, ive got to start selling some old parts to make way for the new ones!!  I'm hoping to get some stuff cleared out tomorrow and make progress on disassembling the old wheels.

*edit*
here's a little tid bit of info from Buzz at dynoman regarding an 836 kit.

"A 41A cam would give you extra power and also work well with the 836cc kit when you choose to install one. As for wanting to get extra millage out of your cylinder, we have 836 kits still on the road that were built 25 years ago and the pistons we have today are even better. There is nothing that will give you the extra power and torque better than an 836 kit. It is all about cylinder pressure and the lower compression pistons just do not get the job done. There is also another bonus with the 836. It is common to get 55 to 60 MPG with them. If you remember the CB500-550 only got about 30 MPG and the stock CB750 got about 42. The reason that the 750 had better millage was the bikes were about the same weight, but with the extra horsepower and torque of the 750 you did not need to open the throttle as much to do the same work.  The same is true with the added torque of the 836 kit. The millage is better, but best of all it is much more fun to ride."

i'm still sticking to my 4th over kit, it'll help me appreciate the 836 kit down the road!

OK, so i need some advice!  here's the way the bike will look, at least somewhat...  the tank is for sure going to be this one, i can't decide if i want to take the plunge on doing knee dents or not.  Andrew (aka Little_Horse) is going to make me a rear seat pan out of aluminum since i'd rather have metal than fiberglass for my "tins"!  the shape will be very similar to the airtech one i have, it will be smoother and a little flatter on the rear so my Carpy tail light will sit flush and look better.

now i can't decide on if i'd like to run Joe's (Frankenbike) ribbed side covers or not.  While they are EXTREMELY trick, i do like a nice clean triangle.  please help me decide!!

with sidecovers:

without:

now you have to keep in mind that the triangle won't be entirely clear.  if i don't use the side covers, then i'll probably use a bung king tank or something and attach it to the back portion of the triangle.  this will clean things up pretty well and still open up the area.  since i'm going to use one of Tintop's intakes, the ledges on the side covers that would normally sit around the air box will look slightly out of place.  please help!!

Do like your the tank and seat combo.

You might want to wait on the side cover decision, until Terry has rec'd the test filter (should be sometime late next week I hope).  It will be tested on a bike with side covers, so I will ask him to post a picture.  Also when I mocked it up on my 750 frame, with engine, carbs, & and a beat up side cover ::) (thanks Frankenstuff for the new ones), it is somewhat farther back than on the 550.  So those bulges should not look out of place.  I plan on running the filter with side covers on this bike (when ever I get around to building it ;)).

I vote not, but that is just an opinion though since I think cafe bike's should be light and look light the open triangle makes it look more greyhound like then with covers.

Oh also when you end up sending me the templates for the seat and cowl you may consider sending the light too so I can do all the work to get everything nicely fit and all.

of course!  i was going to give you the light so you could punch out the hole and mount it up to make sure it works for you!  the problem with that airtech is i would either have to french the light in (recessed) or build some fiberglass or something up to the sides to make it look better.  when you make my tail, i was thinking of making that section flat enough so it looked good!  but i trust your eye on this, i've seen you work Andrew!   ;D ;D

look what showed up in the mail today!!!

now if i can just figure out what's wrong with my slider on one of the tubes, or how to fix it or if i should just let it be, i'll get back to rebuilding the forks!!

ok, more updates.  i disassembled my front and rear hubs, but i'm still fighting with the speedo cable lock screw.  it's totally stripped!  i might have to try the easy out, see if i can figure something out.

i think i have almost all the bearings for the rebuild of the hubs.  i've got to polish the hubs before i can rebuild and then once i decide on a paint color, i can do some little accent work on the center hubs before lacing up the 18's!

next up will be the rear brake rebuild.  i'm somewhat certain that the brake assembly from my '01 spirit 750 is the same as the CB, and since i'm no longer using that assembly, i'm going to see if it's a swap.  i might even try to swap the whole hub if it's the same!  just going to measure, if not, then i'll get to work polishing and drilling my "speed" holes!

i've learned something recently.  when you have the "perfect" bike in your head, it takes FOREVER to make progress!!  you're ALWAYS waiting on parts or the next day!  man o man i'm impatient too, so this just makes things worse!!

You explained that well.  Everyone always asks why I am taking so long to finish my build part 2.  This is why.  I don't like to cut corners and if I compromise my build the first time I always go back and redo it.

I am for no covers if you completely relocate the oil tank and all electronics, including the battery.  Giving the complete open window.  If not keep the covers, IMO.  Nice work and great post on the GL preload adjusters from voxonda.

+1 tweakin, on why 'getting it right' the 1st time takes so long.  I originally thought I would have been 'finished' months ago.  The big stuff is easy, its all the little details, and waiting for / finding 'the right part' that end up adding so much time.

A friend of mine (who restores cars) once said that what ever you think its going to cost, double it, and you might be close.  Also, however long you think its going to take, triple it.  Seems that advice holds true for bikes as well. LOL

got another box full of goodies!!   ;D ;D  hopefully i'll get my Buchanan's in tomorrow along with my Cyclex gasket and seal kit!  i also talked to my Ikon guy, and he said he's pretty certain he was getting my shocks in on this shipment today and that he would put them in the mail today so i'll have them by tuesday or wednesday next week!   ;D ;D

Z1 sent me this!!

Just in case someone needs the instructions for installing HD studs (mine are from APE), here they are:

1. Long threaded end must be installed in the crankcase.
2. Note stock stud length location before removing.  There are two different stud lengths.
3. After removal of stock studs, thoroughly clean holes with solvent and blow out.
4. Using two wrenches, lock up two 8mm X 1.25 nuts on the noted location.  Bottoming out, then using a torque wrench torque to 8 ft. pounds maximum.
5. Install head and following manufacturers torque pattern, torque head nuts to 20-22 ft. pounds.

Now my only questions is what nuts do we use for final install?  Stockers??

I'm of the same mind as Little Horse on opening it up, though like Tin Top's 550 I am going to plant my battery firmly in the center of it on a custom made tray.

I'm not so sure that the big stuff is all that easy to get on with either.  Today I test-fitted my 4th tank.  This will definitely be the one, but if there was anything about it that didn't fit the mental picture, even though the picture evolves daily, then there would be a tank number 5 out there somewhere just waiting for me to buy it.  Easy to say now, but last week I got the scowling question, 'just how many tanks do you need to buy anyway?' from someone who's opinion I take very seriously.  So yes, at some point you have to make a decision.   ;D

I always use the - 'its for that other project' line.  However, that usually leads to - 'how many projects are there?'  :) :)

If you only have kick start and no electric start you can get by with a small battery in the cowl. I found an automotive battery that was 2x3x3 inches and has plenty of power for me to take my time kicking the bike over. Although she almost always starts first kick. Oh the battery was an AGM so no leaking inside there ever.

Oh I have one of kayakers little a123 4-cell batteries.  This should help clean up the electrical nicely!! :)  i can throw hondamans box in there too, should make for a clean setup!

I'm going to use one to these oil tanks: http://www.bungking.com/osc/index.php?cPath=49_50&osCsid=fb52917cd7ae5a03bf962470ad8992a1

Probably use a 5" kit since it's smaller.  The website says it will store 3 quarts with room for expansion.  This with longer lines and an oil cooler and larger filter, should be a nice setup!!  Should I get the flat, flanged or bowl ends?? I'm thinking of adding an oil sight on the end.  Thoughts??

I like the rounded ends, actually pretty affordable kits, I am surprised.

The price is very good.  Agree the round ends look nice but if your planning an oil sight, the flat or flanged will be a lot easier to work with.  Maybe see if you can get a round, and then a flat or flanged for the sight end.  That would look very trick.

If you have the skill to weld the tank up installing a short piece of tubing say 1 in diameter to the lower section of the tank with a predrilled hole there would make a flat surface for the sight glass and would be pretty easy to do.

I would vote a definitive NO for putting knee dents in that very good looking tank...and a yes for the ribbed sidecovers ;).

i got another box yesterday!!  now i can finally get working on the motor!  i also got my parts back from the blaster!  hopefully i can post a picture of that tomorrow.  i'm going to keep the "Excel" writing on the wheels!  might paint the inside of the rim the same color as my tins.  have to come up with a color choice asap for that tho...  thoughts??

one question.  where can i get some of those little cylinder fin "spacer" pucks that go on both sides?  the blasters media totally ate most of those away...

*edit*
it'll be about a $20 mistake, but i have a $15 bike bandit gift card, woo!  #5 in the picture below right?
