« on: May 05, 2010, 01:50:21 PM »
well, i'm finally gonna get legal. im gonna run up to the local DPS in the morning and take my written/vision test, then the on cycle test.

my question... you think they are gonna give me in guff about riding the bike up there to the test? im also hoping they dont give me @#$# about the side mounted tag/brake light.

If they realize you rode without a backup rider beside you, my guess is they would not look favourably at you.
Perhaps a ticket, or not getting to take the test?

They will make sure the bike is road legal before any driving test.

All the above statements are based on my CDN experiences. I have no idea what OK is like?

I took my test from the PDI truck-driving school.  Apparently, in Michigan, the Secretary of State no longer administers the test.  The guy from PDI didn't really care.  But I played it safe anyway, and had my Dad go with me.  But others came alone (and obviously not exactly legal).

You should try to find someone to go with you.

Take the MSF class instead, it is well worth it and they supply the bikes to ride and if you pass you get your M endorsement.
You also get a discount on most motorcycle insurance by taking it.

It is good general knowledge to have also.

+1 MSF test.

WA issues a TEMP permit, which allows you to ride/practice for a set # of days before the test, and not be harassed at the DMV.  Check your DMV has one and get it before you ride up for your test.

In Illinois (over 20 years ago) the tester needed to know that your bike got there legally (driven by a licensed driver or trailered) and it was properly plated and insured.  They didn't issue tickets.. they just wouldn't let you take the test.

BTW - when I took the test on the course, I aced it with a CB750.  I felt sorry for all the guys on big HDs, GoldWings and crotch rockets.  80% were blowing it on the weaving cones portion.  My K6 handled it like a dream.  I'd like to think it was me but I think the CB750 is a great bike to take the test on.

Try to find out the spacing on the cones and go practice in a parking lot.  Better still is to take a motorcycle safety course.

If you are already an experienced rider do you think you really need to take it? Sure, you can always become a better rider but that comes in time, not just from a 2 day course. [go ahead, flame away!]
When I took the course in TX years ago, I rode my Kaw 1000 up there and for the driving portion, they followed you in a cop car!

Good Luck.

hey kyle +1 on the 2 day course IDK about anywhere else but it costs a whopping $25 for it and they provide the bikes.  I thought I knew a good amount and I learned a lot.  They guys teaching the course around here all have like 25+ years ridding experience and they recommend it even for the experienced rider.  Defiantly a good refresher course for evasive.

$25???  where did you get that screamin deal???  my dad took it and it was like $100-125!!  it taught him some good things, but the problem is that all that jazz in the course is slow speed maneuvers.  i never took it and i've been riding 5 years, but i learned how to ride by a super close friend and his dad who are both super safe riders.  they wouldn't let me go get my license until they felt i was ready.  3 days in a parking lot going over what the MSF course does, followed by a couple weeks riding with them on the roads and stuff, THEN i could take the course.  the real world riding taught me SO much more!!  there's an advanced level MSF course as well, a friend of mine took it as a refresher a couple years back, said even that was pretty easy.  it's for people that have been riding more than a year or two...

i REALLY want to go to a race school, where they teach you how to REALLY throw a bike around!  and i want to learn how to handle a bike in the rain on one of their tip-proof bikes too.  but that's $$$$

I hear in MS they give you a ticket and won't let you take the test even thought it's just a ride around the block.

The way MI is set up the state doesn't administer the test.  Me my 2 cousins and a close friend went one weekend at schoolcraft colledge.  3 days 80% of it on a bike.  They taught us alot of evaisive manuvers. The last day we took their writen and ridding test which is alot harder than the states.  If we pass that we immediatly take the state test (which is rediculiously easy).  All you have to do then is go to the secretary office and do the 12 (yes 12) multiple question test litterally took me 5 mins.  All three days cost $25 and they provide the bikes.  Their is also a advanced course that teaches all the high speed stuff, same price but you use your bike.  I haven't taken that one but my boss just did and she said it was a blast.

I will give you youngsters ;D a little history of what it was like when I took my test in 1970 here in WI. My first bike was a 1965 Honda 65cc Sport bought with my own money for like $50. I was 15 at the time and rode it all over the local grocery store parking lot across from my house until I was 16. Got in trouble with the law when they saw me riding it on the road without a license. Anyway, back then we took the written test which gave us a learners permit. With that permit we could ride during daylight hours with no passengers. Not sure how long the learners permit was good for. My test was riding around the cones, pushing it in a figure 8, driving through the cones and shifting through all gears, driving through cones and using hand signals, and putting it on and off the stand. If you took the test on a small bike I think the license was only good up to like 450cc. If you wanted it unlimited cc's then you had to take the test on at least a 450+. That was in 1970 when there were no cycle safety courses offered. When my son wanted his learners permit a few years ago he still took the written test at the DMV and got the learners permit. I then put him through a cycle safety class in WI. If you took the class and passed you did not have to go any further to get your cycle license here. You just took the passing certificate into the DMV and they issued you the license with no test from them. Quite a change from when I took the test.

I will second the MSF course too. In PA one good thing they do here is a portion of your license fees goes to pay for the MSF course. The MSF course in PA is free.

When I took my test I was so nervous I felt like I srewed up left and right, then the bike had a fuel problem and James had to fix it real quick before I did fail, while James was fixing bike I watched the guy that was behind me try and do it on a crotch rocket, needless to say he could not get past the first protion of the test because it had NO manuverablility to get thru the cones he kept putting is foot down and almost layed it down right infront of the instructor adminsitering the test. I felt better after that and got the bike fixed in time and passed it. She knew i was nervous, I had told her upfront that when it comes to test taking i get nervouse but on the road I am good and handle myself very well. And to her that was a good thing, I got my licence and have had it now for many years at leat 5 to be exact. And I enjoy every moment of riding, but I am with the other I would take the MSC First before taking the test, it maybe some slow manuvers, as the cones are slow manuvers and then on the test at least for fla also had some high speed manauvers. I practiced for about a month in a parking lot weaving in and out of plastic cups filled with rocks closer together then what the cones were. When i saw how far apart the cones were I knew that one would be a breeze but I would suggest the MSC. before taking the test. It Will help more then u know. ;)

it's $150 here... and i think my cousin wants to take it with me. he's been riding crotch rockets for years and has his M already.... but he has had like 4 wrecks, so maybe he needs it.
