Why Godzilla, No Really?
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:36:27 PM »
You may have read that I'll be doing regular blog updates about the BIG RIDE. One of the things I want to cover in the first blog is IT. I don't want to presume why Godzilla was selected but in looking through the treads very few spoke about WHY Godzilla should be our mascot.

Feel free to weigh in-- there are no "wrong" answers.

Thanks, and be assured the Godzilla angle is just one of lots of things to report on.

Thanks,

While I believe it was member 'nomad' that came up with the mascot idea and suggested the 'gnome', I felt that the gnome was overdone and represented Travelocity. I suggested Godzilla more as a tongue in cheek response to that, because he was a symbol of Japan just as our bikes were. Others here showed support and took up the cause giving their own reasons why Godzilla worked and that can be found in some of the earlier threads related to the start of the rally.

See reply #4 and #23 in particular...

We thought about a gnome but Godzilla seemed more fun. He is a Japanese Icon just like our Honda's, and indestructable. The producer had the same name as Mr. Honda. Not sure who suggested it first but I like it. Just what I remember, anyone else?

Don't you think it's a little odd that Godzilla has the letter "L" in it and most Japanese speaking people can't pronounce "L's"?  It comes out as "Ga-zirra"   ;D
That's almost like George Carlins question: Whose cruel idea was it to have the letter "S" in the word lisp?

Yes, that's kinda funny.  I used to get machinery parts shipped to me in the 80's & 90's from Japan & a part called "tie rod" had a label saying "tie lod" & it always put a smile on my face ;D

I think Ga-zirra is a perfect mascot/IT for our Japanese beauties because a case of biru (beer) wouldn't last past the first rider  :) :)

This thread... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=83223.0 will take you through the explanation.  You might want to read all the way through it.  There are several posts in there that will give you the reasoning.

And this thread... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=80755.0 is where the whole idea of the relay and mascot came to life.  Again, skim through the whole thread.

Hopefully reading through these threads will answer your questions.

You guys know that he's not called "Godzilla" in Japan, yes?  There, he's "Gojira", thus no "L" and no problems with stereotypical Japanese pronunciation issues.

I've been hearing so much about this mascot and I voted for Godzilla. The ride starts soon. Is there an IT? Is there a picture of the real thing that I will be carrying when IT gets here?
