I do notice quite a bit of tappet noise. It's been since I started it up. I opened the tappet covers and oil is flying all around in there so it's getting lubed. It could just be I'm used to stock tappet noise at .002" and .003. These are about double that. .004" and .005".

I'll recheck tappet clearance in a bit. Thoughts?

Why? I can't answer that question, Cal. It's what the cam card says.

it's the same question that i had: why do different makers spec different lash for similar cams?
well dave, if you find the answer it'll be another small victory for us geeks!

Haha, I'll see what I can come up with! I may need to get a degree in engineering, physics and material properties...but I'll let you know.

Just put about 60 miles on it. So far so good. Oil change now and I'll check the valve lash and post back any findings.

If Mike doesn't show up I'll send him a PM.

Another thing, the oil I'm using is Maxim break in oil 10w-30. I was looking for 10w-40 but all my local place had was the 30. In my manual it shows the heat range for 10w-30 and it shows it being from about 0°F to about 90°F. I got the thinner oil just because CT this time of year doesn't really get past 85°F save for the occasional higher day. Today is about 74°F.

Nice and congrats.  No regrets on the money spent with it giving you smiles for miles.

Sounds like a great upgrade path when you want a lot more power to boost the fun factor, but you need the suspension and braking to go with it.  Without the braking  upgrade it could be dangerous.

Oh my god. It's running. So far it seems to be running very nicely. Can't find any real issues yet, but I'm still looking :)

After a short ride the power is very noticeable, even without the dyno tune. I'll go on a limb and say it's damn fast, haha. Speaking of tuning, the jets that Mike from Powerbarn recommended for my setup is SUPER close. I can't feel any weird spots over 1/4 throttle and there's no back firing on decel. Probably rich in the pilot circuit as there's a slight bogging at a little over 1/8ish throttle. The dyno tune should be fairly easy, fingers crossed!

Also, the Hindle sounds amazing.

Going to try and put 50 miles on it today then change the oil. Psyched!

Congratulations, Dave.  It sounds damn good especially for a first start.  Well done!

Having finished a running bike, your 650 is officially faster than mine, Nick's, Cam's and GV's.   ;D

I love technicalities!

A comment on the CRs, I was under the impression that it would be temperamental at idle and low RPMs. Thanks Mike for recommending the CR26 carbs. So far it seems they fit the bill very nicely. I still haven't really pushed it but even without being tuned or vacuum synced it idles nicely (didn't idle for too long to keep oil pressure up).

Should I be pulling the oil pan? Draining the oil in a clean container I see very little fine grit. Swished a magnet around and only came up with a tiny amount.

Picture of the bottom of the container.

Just swap the oil and filter and refill it. Ride on, Buckaroo!

Weirdly I dig the "Buckaroo", haha.

Also, the valve lash did shift. The motor is just warm to the touch but I'm measuring .006" and .007" for intake and exhaust respectively. Not sure if this is normal for a new motor... It shifted about .002" on each tappet. I'm 100% sure I set them correctly before.

Did your head suddenly relax a bit squishing more in a heat cycle to cause them to grow 0.002?  I would be tempted to pull the cover and check the head gasket bolt's torque...but I am just paranoid.

It is not paranoid behavior  if they truely are out to get you...

I retourqued the head after 24 hours a few weeks ago. But I'm not against going back in there if I have to.

But is that a known thing? The head squishing more after a heat cycle? I would think it's the bolts that stretch and that would decrease the clearance.

Either way, I set them back to the proper spec so we'll see what happens.

I love the fact that I get free R&D from the builds in front of me.

PS -- I never had any issues with my CR29s in my 836 kitted CB750 -- it was fairly well tempered at idle and the power felt pretty linear through the rev range.  Since we are usint the same 674 kit, same head (except mine is the earlier 80 model) and cam, I will likely go with the same carburetors and jets.

The 550 is best with CR26s as it is not as thirsty as the 750 and the bigger carb causes more tuning headaches  from what I have read were you to try to use CR28/29s on the 550.  Since the 650 is not that much thirstier than a 550 and the CRs can flow way more CFM than the stock carbs even you modified 674 is not needing a bigger carb.
Changing jetting is so much easier as well, almost worth it for that aspect if you ever pulled pressed in CV carb jets you can appreciate that...

I don't mind paving the way ;) And of course I'll let you know the exact jets and such I ultimately end up with. That'll get you dialed in pretty close. Yeah, I don't imagine the head differences throughout the years can require that different of jets.

I agree that if the head needed a retourque it would also show signs of weeping and so far it's bone dry. I'm going to take it out today and do a vacuum sync and more assessing. Also making an appointment with the dyno :)

Another interesting thing, the shop where I got the tires from mounted and balanced them. They use those controversial balance beads and the ride was very smooth. I probably got it up to 70 mph-ish (speedo isn't calibrated yet so I'm guessing). But so far I'm a fan.
