Hi all, just wondering how many of you guys live in California..?  My daughter and one of her girl friends will be in California and Nevada from the 1st of August to the 18th, visiting LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas. They have some accommodation organized but are a bit cautious after being told by friends of lots of hidden charges being charged to unsuspecting tourists. Anyone have any recommendations or willing to have a couple of great girls stay over for a night or two..?  All advice welcome...

Send them here to Oklahoma. We've got earthquakes, tornados and floods all on the same day.

My wife will be like.... If I invited any girls to stay over.

Amenities provided by hotels are usually extra costs.  If they stay in Hollywood area, cost to stay probably higher.

Hi Steve, added charges like , car park charges and valet fees, even if you don't have a car, resort charges, energy surcharges, ground keeping fees and piles more rubbish, none of which is stated before your stay, and is tacked onto the bill before you leave. In Australia all fees and charges must be disclosed up front so you know what you are paying before you leave, no surprises.... ;)

Hey Mick, how are they planning to get around; rental car? Forget about driving or even parking in the tourist area of San Francisco. Neither there nor LA is the place to learn about driving on the "wrong" side of the road. From what I've heard from locals, all the tourists in Vegas drive like #$%*s, but I've only been through there twice: once in the early 60's as a kid on a return trip from Colorado Springs in the family '59 VW bus (I remember the neon cowboy), and the second time was in the mid '80s, when I only slowed down long enough to grab a burger at 3:00 AM on the way to CO for my grandmother's birthday. The only time I've been blatantly over-charged was for phone calls charged to a credit card, at a name brand hotel in Atlanta, GA.

I have a piece of paper next to me that has the dates and places they'll be at, scribbled in the middle are the words "road trip", haven't spoken to her about that yet.... :o

Las Vegas has a little place next to the world's largest super-8 called  Ellis Island.   Inexpensive but very good line of craft beers brewed in house. Very good ribs on the weekend for a smokin' deal but get on the list at 5:00 pm or earlier  or it can take a while.  Good specials all other nights.  It's where people who work in Vegas go.

It's just a stumble  across a driveway from a reasonably priced place to sleep. 8)

And if you're in walking shape it is good access from the strip, about a quarter mile from a line of The Strip casinos- Bally, Paris, Cesar's palace, Belagio are all less than a mile.

There's always going to be shady places that will try to pull that crap on you no matter where you go, but if they're dealing with well-known, established companies they don't have anything to worry about.  They have to state upfront what all the charges will be, and anything added on to that would be voluntary add-ons like premium movies (are they going to watch porn?), room service, mini-bar, etc.  There is not a culture of scamming tourists here because even when traveling within our own country we're all still tourists.

I have some friends from university that planned a birthday party weekend in the middle of July in Vegas.
I had to politely tell them I don't do heat anymore no matter how #$%*ing dry it is.
February is about the only time I would care to do Vegas.

Holey cow!  :o

Never thought I'd see the day that a member offered up their daughter on the forum!  :o  ;)  ;D

Hope they enjoy their visit, I'm a little too far East to be of any assistance. As long as they pay attention to their surroundings they should be fine. As far as "hidden charges" they should be able to request a "bottom line" quote for lodging before checking in. There are often "resort taxes" that will be charged by all hotels/motels in some states (Florida is one of them) as a way to offset lower taxes for the locals...

Came here to suggest this as well.  Also, expect to pay extra for parking in San Francisco, whether it's at a hotel, in a garage, or on the street (parking meters in many neighborhoods).  If parking on the streets in the San Francisco area, tell them to read the street/meter signs to avoid parking tickets, or worse - getting towed (costs nearly $1K in San Francisco after all is said and done).  Here's the rub...they won't need a car in San Francisco.  A car will just help them see a few more things in the same amount of time if they're willing to deal with the hassle/cost of parking it.
