EDIT: It is very common to have a MC to a single rear disc setup on most bikes... is there a reason that I could not just take a rear MC and use it on the front of my bike?

depends on bore size of the master. needs to be able to move enough fluid for the caliper to be effective. Rear calipers are typically small single pistons.

Hey B, So you're leaving your cases bare? I know we're talking master Cyl's at the moment.

In My extremely "un-professional" opinion, I would think that as long as the mounting system is solid and the bore of the M/c is correct for a single caliper/disk , I would think it should work alright??

Yes I'm leaving mine bare.  Everything has its downsides, paint chips and flakes and powdercoat can do the same over time.  I don't mind the look of aging metal and with the sprays and treatments to bring back the finish i am comfortable keeping it looking nice.

Not to be a wet blanket, but powdercoat is extremely durable and stain resistant.  You will have to be vigilant to inspect your engine and clean up your mess if you have oil, gas or grease accumulate on it.  Once it cooks on, it is a more difficult stain to remove.  That said, if you are the meticulous type, you should be just fine.

Very true, i just don't like the inability to repair nicks and scratches without redoing the whole piece.

Good powdercoating shouldn't "nick and scratch" unless you hit it with a hammer, must be some #$%*ty powdercoaters out your way.... :P

rocks on the freeway can be a #$%*.  My family friend built a trailer, powder coated it, then a week after he finished it, the leading edge got chipped up after hitting a patch of loose gravel, got wet and the moisture spread under the powder coat.  He stripped it down to the metal then painted it.

Not saying that is all that common or going to happen on my bike, just saying that is one attribute of powder coat I don't love.

My trade is in industrial epoxies, done both electrostatic and lots powdercoating too, if powdercoating is done well it is the most durable coating of the lot, I'd say the prep wasn't that good if a small piece of gravel chipped the powder, it should take a much bigger hit than that.  Everyone knows someone with a "story".... ;D

FYI - I painted my last engine with VHT paint because (then) beadblasting and powdercoating the cases was a pain in the butt to make sure all of the media was cleared out.

I never said it wasnt resilient or I disliked powder coat  :P Im going to powdercoat my frame.  I just dislike how you cant repair damage without redoing it all.  As far as engine cases are concerned, I agree powder coat is perfect for that application (probably better than paint when considering the gas/oil it will contact), I just prefer the look of bare metal.

You can repair damaged powder without having to redo the whole thing, if you have the facilities and if you know what you are doing... 8)

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem... If it's an electrical problem, it's Cal's problem.
