Carb sync tool - I'm missing a pipe...
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:25:26 AM »
Hi guys

Got my hands on a sync tool, but one of the brass pipes is missing. I can't seem to find them for sale in europe - only in the USA - i.e. :

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XBrass+Carb+Sync+Syncpro+Adapters+Carburetor+Synchronizer.TRS0&_nkw=Brass+Carb+Sync+Syncpro+Adapters+Carburetor+Synchronizer&_sacat=0

Can I just take any small pipe, cut some thread on it and use it?  Or is the diameter of the hole important?

You can just make one.  I have done so by drilling through a screw of the proper size and then countersinking the head to accept some brass tubing, and soldering that in place.

Size of the hole isn't critical, but I went ahead and made up a set of four anyway, it's always nice to have spares.

Franky, what's your address. As long as you're not in Timbuktu or some other high-priced-shipping place, tell me which one you're missing (long or short) and I'll send you one. I have an extra set.

Thanks a lot for both advise and links (and for the kind offer to send me a spare, ADW). Think I'll try drilling a set of bolts

^  mad posted the link to the motion pro set of the brass parts that stay attached to the carb and are covered by the rubber caps.
whilea great idea, i found that the rubber caps will tear after being pulled off a few times.

Try these 5mm sync tubes
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14463/i/motion-pro-syncopro-carburetor-tuner-adapters?WT.mc_ID=80003&P_ID=137019&colorid=262&sizeid=865&SITEID=Google+SEARCH+NON-BRAND+Product+Level+Ads+-+Google+Shopping+Campaign&P_ID=1327457456&adpos=1o3&creative=89457082613&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAiAt_K0BRCzjtv92_HGoR0SJAA9QNn_CMZcknePuNbUFqEtHWGpcFeILhPyuhrfH-ijB6rUXBoCTYzw_wcB

The ones that I linked to I only use while tuning and remove when I'm done, as opposed to leaving them in place. For five bucks it's worth it to me not to have to fiddle with a home made solution...

although I am a big fan of being self sufficient, and I have several purpose built homemade tools and jigs myself.  8)

Naturally, the time when these tend to break is JUST when you are wanting them to sync your bike with.  :-\  THANKS Murphy!

$5 is definitely a good price for these and well worth it although i personally prefer the longer Motion Pro stick-style ones as they are somewhat easier to get on and off, but those are only $3 more!  I may just order a set to be proactive.

I was able to whip up mine using on-hand materials in under an hour though, and complete the sync i was attempting to do, so it was time well spent for me at the time.

Necessity is the mother of invention! If I have a task at hand, and don't feel like waiting for an item to ship, I have been known to put forth some extra effort to get it done as well.  8)

For the record and for future searchers!

The diameter does seem to make a difference! I bought a bunch of nylon connectors from www.carbtune.com. Using those, make the dials even more jumpy than the brass ones (bigger hole in the nylon ones). Then, I stumbled across this video:
I didn't have any of the flow-restrictors, so I went ahead and bought a bunch of these: http://www.akvariebutikken.dk/product/vinkel-46-mm-mregulering-1656/
They are for aquariums, but work just fine! I finally got my bike synched :-)
