Factory pro has rule of thumb stuff to get you in the area, perhaps right on.  I like what sean barney said about the tuba and I hear him a little but i think factory tunes for emissions and quietness and all around rideability for your average Joe and everything is a compromise.  I kinda remember air intake restricts before exhaust, but opening up your exhaust will make it run leaner (because more air).  And more air is more horsepower.  And so after intake, jetting, and exhaust, the next improvement (still a compromise, you might loose some idle or low end torque), is a cam change..  Then you could start flowing your head and changing valves but that's out there with higher compression pistons, bigger bore, stroke...  Cheapest hp gains are bigger displacement bike to start with.

Yes, the quest can be never ending.
I'm not obsessed with max HP, just trying to obtain a balance of design esthetics and practicality, ease of operation. Trying to build a beautiful machine that works, without making too many mistakes.

Don't listen to the fearmongers.  Its not that hard to jet a carb.

Then why do so many struggle with it and so few get it right?

great question wilbur!  i installed a 12:1 big bore kit, over sized intake valves, lumpy and bumpy cam, electronic ignition, 40mm carburators, straight drags pipes!  then i closed my eyes when i twisted the throttle hoping everything would JUST WORK!  ;D maybe pixy dust  :o

Sounds good to me!  8)

Of course, plug chops can be an effective method for jetting, but many are in denial about committing to the effort and few are willing to splurge on half a dozen sets (twenty four, or more!) of spark plugs and seeking out a long lonely stretch of rural road to do it right. Most just want a "formula" for jetting and ultimately live with "pretty close" as long as it runs reasonably well.

Everything would only be a starting point. Plug chops like Wilbur suggested are a must from there on out. Pixy dust didn't get me anywhere! No more just think happy thoughts
