Well, small change of plans. Ran across a cool vintage speed part and decided with all the new tech I'm throwing at this bike it needs a link to the past so I snatched up an NOS yoshimure 122-00 camshaft for this!



That's pretty rare.  Every once in a while a Yosh 750 camshaft will surface, but I haven't seen any for 550s.

judging by what information lurks in the past of SOHC4.net it appears these were cut from OEM honda blanks then sent back to honda for the heat treat, so dont REQUIRE hardweld rockers. I'm probably going to have the rockers and the cam coated with anti friction, though.

I think this ebay seller is trickling them out one at a time and must have a few.....I asked him if he had more and his response was "why would you need two?" probably lists one at a time to keep the price up.

Ok, long story short, I don't think the R6 flywheel/stator will be the answer.....





and, according to all of my measurements the tapers are not the same. although an adapter COULD be made, I still don't think it'll be possible to get the flywheel to fit into the cb650 cover.

I drew the adapter up anyway, would look like this:



autocad calculated angle of taper is 5.4 degrees for cb650, 1.57 degrees for R6. I assume with margin of error in my quick measuring that its more like 6* and 2*. I'd have to cut both in half to get accurate measurements using tools I have at hand, which I probably won't do.

Looks like I'll look into the VFR parts, or maybe cbr600rr parts to see if honda used the same taper that new.

that is the plan, just have to find somewhere to do it. I want the rockers done too.

Is the problem with the tapered cone being too thin at one end or just too difficult to grind to interference fit with a knife edge on the part. If it is heat treated it is going to be resisting suffering from a crack once the flywheel is fitted. It would crack unless hit sharply/dropped from height until forced beyond where it need to seat, right. ?  Why do you feel it is unsuitable?
A little dry ice packed around the end of crank for few minutes for last few minutes the tapered sleeve is heated in the oven. Pull off dry ice, retrieve part from oven  with heavy gloves and  rags that won't burst into flames or melt, pickup and transfer the cone to the crank and give it a few light taps to seat it on the crank. A line with scribed marks with machinist's dye helps you know it is seated to the depth required. Right?  Only risk is part might crack if too hot and if crank is very cold, due to thermal shock.
