Keith Byers passed away today
« on: April 03, 2024, 03:19:43 PM »
I'm having a very hard time sitting here and typing this message. Keith passed away today while in surgery. I can stress enough what a talented and great fella he was. I think the only thing he loved more than his family and close friends was the CB750 and the community surrounding it. Who else would have billet cranks made with blank drive gears so he could cut them himself. Nobody. I have CAD of a billet head for the CB750 with giant, straight intake ports and shallow valve angles that could accommodate 40mm intake valves as well as 2 large exhaust valves. It also incorporated a very trick external oiling system. Billet engine cases were in the works too with gear primary drives for those cranks he had made.
I was lucky enough to spend many days with Keith at drag racing events such as Valdosta, Bradenton etc. We spent many hours on the phone talking engines and life. I still feel numb and I'm sure the loss will really set in over the next few days. I'm so grateful I spoke with him last week before his surgery. He sounded great and was upbeat.....very typical for him. The last thing I said to him was "I love you brother".....his response was "I love you too."
I can't type anymore as I can't see the keyboard through my tears. God Speed my friend....you will be missed but never forgotten.

That is a real loss for many!
He had lots of knowledge, deep knowledge.
I like his comments about how the earliest CB750 looked like when he unwrapped them in the shop he worked in.

I have had thoughts now and then about the heart condition he got after first J&J C19 injection.

There are other, earlier very frequent  commenting members I have not seen for a while.....

Mike and all....
My condolences. I didn't know Keith myself but I know what the loss of good friends is. Life is short even for the good friends.

Aww, man.  Sad to hear the news.  Yeah, I lived right around the corner from him.  I had been to his shop many times.  It was a museum.  Everything was organized and cataloged.  He was completely serious and totally immersed in CNC.  He gave me a lot of pointers when the company I was working at the time bought a couple of CNC machines and my son and I were tasked with running them.  I saw a lot of the things he was working on.  Before I moved, he was working on a four-speed Honda automatic transmission.  I don't know if he ever got it working.  One of the last times I saw him was when I scavenged a couple of old blast cabinets and dust collectors from my workplace and gave one to Keith.  He drove his forklift over to my shop and helped me unload the one I was keeping for myself.  He was very complementary about the CB750 I built.  He even bought two of the billet clutch lifter plates I was selling.

Words can't express how I feel about the loss of Keith during heart surgery Wednesday afternoon. 💔 He was having surgery for an aortic aneurysm. He passed during the surgery...I have no idea...heart attack, it maybe ruptured, whatever it was, it doesn't change the result. As Mike Rieck wrote, Keith was so talented, friendly and helpful. We had so many great conversations and good times trackside racing. He had such a great sense of humor and his depth of knowledge, especially concerning our beloved SOHC 750's and general machinery was unparalleled in my book. He was so innovative and guys so often, me and Mike wanted to talk about the magic being created in his shop/museum,  but were sworn to secrecy,  lol. Keith has more bikes, parts, pieces, paraphernalia, books and stuff for CB750 SOHC bikes, it is practically indescribable....what he would have continued to achieve was going to be mind boggling. His dreams will live on...he wanted to build the quickest SOHC Automatic  and was well on his way. He was supposed to be retired, but he had two 5 axis at his shop at home and did Formula 1 side work etc. He helped me with tech advice and work so often and it was hard to get him to accept anything financial for his services. Damn, I loved 😍 that man, he was so cool 😎.  Keith, brother, RIP as I told Mike , I can hear him now ,ok ,Bill " I'm going let you get back to your rat killing" LMAO 🤣  I hope someday the Automatic engine Mike and I collaborated on, will go down the 1320 in his honor... I can't type anymore, I can't see the keyboard 😢  RIP Keith.

It would be fantastic if that head with valve train should become real!
I saw his valve train pics in the race forum with all angles calculated.
