also, it may be brittle since it's almost 40 yrs old.
G'day Mickey
I'll give the best treatment available when it gets here and I think that it will be worth every cent to have it done professionally.
It really should be an excellent film to watch and to see some of those old 1970's shots with a 750 Honda making dust in the Australian outback.
Should bring back some good memories too.
There is some pretty harsh country out there and it's no place for the faint hearted.

mick7504, the Ebay listing for the film shows 200ft. of Super 8 film.
That is about 10 minutes of running time. Was there more than one reel? Could this be just a highlight reel?
Cheers,
David

Hi David
There is only one reel that I am aware of as per the Ebay listing.
What I'll do is send this guy an email and ask him how long it runs for.
I have it coming now but either way I'll let you know what his reply is.
It'll be a shame if it's only a short doco but at least it is some old hard to come by footage.

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Well done Mick, if you don't do any good send it to me, my son can take it to Deakin University and convert it to a DVD. 200 feet of super 8 is 10 minutes running time. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Thanks Terry
I appreciate that mate.
I really didn't give it much thought at the time as to the length of the running time but anyway it's coming and that's a plus.
It would be good to put together our own DVD of some old motorcycle footage (including this one) and maybe get an hour or more of viewing and make it available to all of the guys here.
If the costs are covered to do this, a donation could then be forwarded to the treasury of the SOHC forum as each copy is purchased which would benefit everyone here.
Does anyone have any thoughts about doing something like this or some ideas how it could be worked?
I like the old Honour System.
I'm more than happy to get behind it.

And keep a  copy for the bloke who started it please. I'll pay by any method, to play in the UK.  Talking to my mate this afternoon, and he remembers the TV episide. He remembers that one of his accidents was "set up" by the TV crew (good for the program) to which Julian Grant was not very pleased.
Anyone know what happened to Julian Grant ?

Slides in the back door quitely and says....Hell ya, I would pay for a copy ;D

Edit:
I spent a couple of mins online and came across a TV series he did called "David Niven's World"
Quote: I remember a episode where a guy was driving a motorcycle across a foreign country and the film crew was filming it. This was a typical episode.

 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073978/

Could be a segment of his adventure show?

Updates,
Good article on the history of these rides around Australia.
http://books.google.ca/books?id=svgDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA21&lpg=PA21&dq=Julian+Grant,+Frank+Wheeler&source=bl&ots=Eu8YBs7QsV&sig=x76Wz2EWdSLBmAfzsMVtMo4Vze0&hl=en&ei=VpFjS7qTLIHWtgPOisGdAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Julian%20Grant%2C%20Frank%20Wheeler&f=false

Both names again in an article.
"The event also saw the continuation of the much publicised feud between film maker Julian Grant and American millionaire Frank Wheeler. Grant rode and finished, collecting $20,000 from a bet with Wheeler. The American failed to show up."

Derek,

Scrolling down that item on the castrol 6 hour race...found an interesting name - as the winner of the 500 class  "J Eastmure" - just happen to be meeting up with him on a four day CX500 rally coming up in the next few weeks here in Australia...he is riding down from Queensland to Cowra. And is still an active rider it seems. I just sent him a stash of Suzuki points I found (about 50 sets unopened for 30 years).

Showing my youth a bit here but I remember my dad telling me this story when I was a kid! He's always ridden big fours and I'd be willing to throw in to help get this film spread around the forum.

Just an update on what's happening with the the Julian Grant tape.
The guy sent an email tonight about the Super 8 reel, and it is well on it's way.
He mentioned that this documentary runs for roughly 10 minutes, so I was thinking that some old motorcycling footage  from the 60's/70's, would be a good add on to fill the disc a bit. (Track or Strip or Doco's)
Anyone with ideas?
Mick

Like these but they are "owned" and we'd get in trouble I bet. I'll look around. There are some good ones on that site though.  ;) :)

One of the options after converting it to digital,is uploading a torrent or a file sharing site..
(Same system people use to grab movies from pirate bay and the like)

You could name the torrent anything, so even if people searched for it they would not be able to find it.
Then after a donation/payment, the interested part would be given a link to download said torrent.

This would however rely on the honor system as there is nothing stopping people sharing the torrents location, but on this site i think you would be ok.

Another advantage is you will eliminate the burning/shipping/region issued with the film, effectively taking the hassel from the operation.

On another note, the film may well be brittle, i took some old reels of my parents wedding , ran em through a projector i picked up at a flea market, hoping to film em via a digital cam, but it was so old it broke every few frames, so proffesionally might be the best way to go.

Thanks for that mate.
All I can do is to do the best I can with the reel when it arrives.
Your idea about a torrent is a good one and I was thinking somewhere along those lines rather than making a stack of DVD's and then trying to distribute them from a central point.
If this site can gain some benefit from this, then I am all for it, and I feel that we can make it happen.
So just for now, (When it arrives), I would like to concentrate on getting it onto a disc or some form of file format.
Then with some input from our members here, we can work out a good way of sharing it without it becoming "global property".
If we put our heads together, we can do it.
No problem.

I think that torrents or somekind of download would be the best and easiest way to distribute this vid.   very very very intrested in seeing this footage!

thing is, it was purchased by a member here for sharing with the club.  I think it's only fair that people buy the right to see it to help him recoup his losses.

I'd like to see it, doesn't need to be in great quality. if there isn't a copyright on it then it could be run through a projector onto a screen, recorded with a digital camera or camcorder and posted to youtube. that would be the easiest and cheapest way to go about it.

told my gf about this guys trip, i said I'll have to look into shipping costs to have my bike sent to Australia when we visit her family there. she laughed, she doesn't know how serious i am  ;D
