I want to run pods but the pods I purchased were either too small

I know you rookies love the look of pods but i will guarantee  you that if its running well and smooth with the stock airbox then just leave it as it is, pods are mostly crap and will Never perform on a stock bike like the original airbox. Do a search of the forum and see for yourself. Most people only want pods for the look but they are a pain in the butt to tune and will never perform correctly right throughout the rev range, bogging, flat spots and a higher uneven idle are common.
Your speedo is also off an early 69-71 model 754, it may be worth selling on this site and using the money to get a correct replacement, your pipes are also off the 69-75 model K's, depending on the numbers on them, HM3400's for the early models and HM341's for the later 73-76 K's....

I disagree , and think pods will be just fine if you do the work to tune the bike properly.

It is IMPOSSIBLE, for pods to work as effectively as the stock system for quite a few reason, it has been covered lots of times on this forum already, the stock velocity stacks were designed {engineered} to smooth out calm air supplied by the airbox to eliminate turbulence which directly effects the way the carbs work, the complete induction system was designed as a whole,  to work that way. There is a growing number of people that had your view that have eventually gone back to the stock system to find out simply that it is by far the best approach and easiest way to tune these bikes. Pods, by design, work at a particular rev range, most people experience this with either poor idle, jerky mid range and usually no problems up top because that is what pods were designed for. Anyway i am not going to go into any more detail here, this has been covered entirely by one of the resident engineers meticulously, do a search and read on..... Velocity stacks are not pods and you haven't even ridden your bike yet so that statement hold no credibility what so ever, stacks only , are use for racing applications mainly, or used to because they generally work best flat out and if you were up to date with all this you would realize that even motoGP bikes run airboxes with stacks.....I wonder why....
Use a freer flowing air filter in the stock system and put some holes in the bottom section of the airbox so it flows more and you will notice the difference and still be able to easily tune the bike. I will also say that some other makes of carbs will work reasonably with pods, the Honda carbs generally don't..... I also don't think it is very productive dragging up old posts and going over subjects that have already been flogged to death on the forum....

I don't know the actual model number but K&N make a pod with a stack built in, that may help.....

BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!

So, my cafe project took a back seat to a few other hobbies.  I ended up getting married as well.  After 2 years of living with my wife, she kept asking "what are you gonna do with that old bike in the corner of the garage!?".   Finally, I decided to sell it.

I listed on craigslist and on this forum.  I got lots of interest but only one guy showed up to look at it - 02z06dave. 

We discussed the bike and me basically giving up on the build.  He showed me a few pics of a build he did.  He said he was going to build this one as well.  Dave basically said "you should let me buy it, or let me build it for you".  I said I'd consider both and we parted ways.

Now my wife knew I had someone coming to look at the bike.  She came home from work and asked if I had sold it.  I told her of my conversation with Dave and beat around the bush about me actually having him build it for me.   She gave me "the look".  Much to my surprise, she said "either sell it or build it, don't let it just sit there".  I love my wife

I frantically txt Dave to tell him of my decision - let him build it!  We met up and discussed plans and budget.   A couple weeks later, I took the bike to his place and we stripped it down to the frame in about an hour or so.  No turning back!

I've bought some parts and with the weather finally breaking in Ohio, we're about to really start getting in to the build.



I got some engine covers from Rusty Riders LLC on ebay (not pictured)
I got a seat from Bedlam Works
I got a tank from Legendary Motorcycles
I got a lighted seat hoop from Cognito Moto (not pictured).

Next two purchases are rear sets and hopefully and oil tank that I like.  I'd love a hidden one...and I'm open to suggestions.
Once I get these parts, we'll start modifying the frame and prepping it for powder coating, and painting the engine.

Anyway, I'm happy to have met Dave and revive this thread! Enjoy!!!

I've noticed most people name their project builds.  I never named mine.  However, after the flurry of spending I've done, I'm thinking of naming this one the "Budget Buster".  I probably have 75% of my parts purchased and 0% of my paint/powder.  Good thing for me that my wife and I don't share bank accounts

Anyway, here are some of the parts that have made their way to my house over the last couple months:

Depending on you plan for finishes, you may want to clear powdercoat that valve cover.  Modern powdercoating does not yellow, and will save you from the chore of periodic polishing to keep that cover shiny.
