Helping with the Tragedy in Japan
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:48:40 PM »
Like all of you , when I saw the devastation caused by the earth quake and tsunami in Japan today, I immediately wanted to figure out how to help.  I did some thinking on ways to add a charity component to the SOHC4 Relay/Rally.  A way to leverage the tremendous ground swell of support, energy and positive press we're getting to link up with a reputable charity and help raise funds.

I did some research.  In order to become an "official" fundraiser for most of the charities I checked, we would need to set up a collection plan, establish auditable financial controls, file an application for review and approval.

There simply isn't time to pull anything like that together before the launch of the relay and likely not even by the time we're half done.

So I ask you.  Consider that there is no ride fee being requested for this rally, think about what you would normally be asked to "donate" for even an afternoon's fundraiser ride and give at least that to the disaster relief charity of your own choosing.

Thank you for your time.  I now return you to your regularly scheduled forum browsing.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Even though I didn't feel the actual tremors, when I heard 8.9 magnitude on the news this morning I was shaken to my core. I've don't remember ever having HEARD of a quake that powerful before. Officially I didn't think we would be able to establish a stand alone charitable fund, which "OldSchool_IsCool" confirmed. I also felt that a donation to an established relief fund would definitely be in order. Members can make their donations as they see fit, although things are tough all over, and thousands of people are losing their homes here, albeit not in such a drastic manner, still losing their homes nonetheless.

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to those affected by this, and if a member were in a position to help in any way, those that are assisted by the relief efforts I am certain would be grateful.

Ive just read an article that they are not requesting international assistance yet.

You can donate $10 on your phone to red cross with your cell phone by texting

REDCROSS to 90999 and it will be added to your phone bill.

This goes into the big red cross pot though. No idea about how to donate to the Japan Red Cross directly.

Scottly,

I haven't had much contact with Ito since his original posts.  I looked up his profile and according to his map, he is well inland and South of Tokyo.  Prolly got shook up pretty good, but I doubt the Tsunami would have been a direct threat for him.

I did send him a PM to let him know he is thought about.

Hi OldSchool,

I happened to east Japan.
I moved from Tokyo to Aichi prefecture on October 2010.
Me&family are OK as Aichi is far from center of earthquake.

Watching TV,this earthquake is more than we expect.
I can not say anything about this disaster.
Tsunami has hit west coast USA and Hawaii.  Shocked

Thank you very much.

Sorry to step on your toes Anti Johnny but...

If you want to help, go to your local bank or Red Cross and donate. There are so many F*&^ing criminals who mask themselves to send your money but in fact do nothing of the sort!!

Please people, go to your bank or the Red Cross to dontae... this way you KNOW they are getting the donation!!!

Ok, I just saw this posting after posting a similar idea to the Relay AND BEYOND page.  I'm totally behind you.  Obviously we can donate on our own, and everything you can give is great, but why not get our friends to commit before we ride to a dollar amount per mile, and individually coordinate making a contribution on our community's behalf?

I do also!!! I am unemployed right now but I could spare a tiny amount and I really like the idea of our rally being behind this as in signing others up to donate as per how many miles we ride. Thats the way they used to do it with those walkathons. I will talk to some family and friends to see how much I could raise by riding the aprox. 500 miles I will do. This is a great idea to tie it in with the rally.

I just put up a post on facebook.....I mentioned our ride....asked if anyone was donating and suggested that one of our members brought up the idea to work it like a walkathon.....pledge X amnt. of money per mile for a rider. I said it would go to Red Cross. I'm planning on doing 500 miles at the end of April so I wrote......pledge me 1 penny per mile = $5.....nickel per mile = $25, etc.....Man....if enough of us did that and got enough others to pledge....WOW!!!  This would be a way cool thing for our club and benefit alot of people. Hope we can do something like this.......MrBreeze

I really like the idea Breeze!!  It would be a GREAT motivator for each rider to know that every mile they ride they are clicking up X dollars!  Will help ya to push on through that rain storm or get up early so you can get to the far end of a ride segment on time!!

I'll caution you though; we're not an "official" fundraiser for the Red Cross or any other charity.  Please ask your donors to submit the funds directly to the Red Cross.  Have them use the "tribute" option and designate the "SOHC4 Relay" as the object of the tribute.  You will want to supply your email address so that you get an email upon the donation.  (Should we have a central email address maybe??)

To take the money yourself could open you up to certain liabilities you don't wana deal with!!

Perfect. A PURPOSE is the one thing this ride was missing and was the reason I labeled it "existential"---undertaken purely for it's own merits--existing only because we will it.

Now a purpose has arisen and one with an obvious link to the objects of our affection. I'm completely behind the idea. Excellent work and great advice on keep any donations directly channeled to Red Cross, etc.
