Traded a Smoker
« on: June 26, 2012, 02:59:44 PM »
Traded a nice old smoker (72 DS7) for this fella here.

here is the ds7 I traded :

new bike is a 77 cb750 F that has been modded somewhat and had a face lift.

The bike was only running on 3 cylinders upon inspection and when i disconnected the atrocity of a brake light that was 3m taped to the seatpan something seemed to happen and it would no longer start. I think I must have disconnected a ground wire or something... also when I went to kick it no resistance , it went straight to the floor....the guy seemed to either be an academy award winning actor or stunned and truely shocked by this . I did here it run though and it sounded strong and the none firing first cylinder did have good compression whenb I removed the (gulp)pod filter and felt for suction while it was running . I have heard pods are garbage and impossible to tune unless smooth bore CR type for these bikes but then I also heard F carbs were ok with pods  and different with K  .Any how  this guy was some rich fella that owned some restaurants and didnt seem to know a whole lot more about bike other than how to ride them and pay people to make them look pretty . Kinda cocky fella so I taxed him for the cockiness ( dude actually said I am rich ,no lie ..) and left with his bike and cash for my ds7 that I had all of 300$ in . I was pretty happy.

If anyone has anything to offer advice wise please I am all ears- hopefully I can make some more noise with it today -

viva la "F"!

if it has a dyna ignition one of the more retarded things you will find is the instruction to hook the constant power dyna lead to the taillight. If this is what happens the bike will kick start but won't start with the e-start since the taillight goes out when the e-start engages.

if your kicker isn't engaging, and you just disconnected the "constant" power to the taillight (and therefore the ignition) then you won't have any spark or a way to test what is wrong. I don't see how anything can be grounded to a fiberglass seat.

take off the derby cover and see what he has for an iggy in there - if it is a dyna, retrace and hook the constant power up to keyswitch.

get rid of those shorty shocks pronto.

Nothing was grounded to a fiberglass seat :)
interesting wiring under the pan - checking iggy out now  . Also hey switch along with left pod controls have been deleted. There is a toggle switch on the bucket and then you suppose to hit the magic button (how he started it . )

meant kicker isnt physically engaging- ei no resistance, will not turn motor over - I dont see how unplugging a wire could ever change that but maybe I am about to learn something new here.

are the shocks really that bad :) ?

Kicker works :)   weird.....  like a fly wheel missing teeth now it is catching almost everytime. Bike started! Couldnt get to idle without holding throttle. All 4 plugs were fouled..... Thought pods caused lean condition.....
all nice and sutty... Good news is maybe that what was causing number 1 not to fire. Ultrasonicing plugs now will know soon. E- start still no joy...obviously ignition related though , getting fire. Noticed one bolt missing from starter cover too so someone has been in there for something or nother.

Houston we have points!  Regapping now. Also noticed some fin chippage and the head has a chip near the mating surface that some felt the need to use black RTV sealant on.    Wonder what effect that'll have. well, headed into the bucket next with my multimeter to trace were the power flow stops from the ignition.
Wish me well :)

If that tail peice is in good shape and your not in love with it.
I would trade an original seat, original seat cowl/tailpeice,chrome grab bar and taillight.
If interested my bike is in the first page of the gallery.

As a matter of fact I am not in love with it  . Thinking about going with a duck tail seat like this bike :
The tank already lends itself to the dunstall look.

I do have several pans for trade though - PM me for details

Turns out the battery was just too low to crank her. Tester said 12 V

Its a newer sealed number.....

another weird thing . check out the odometer on this little guy. Trip is longer than the actual mileage. Figure that out. Also that guy is prolly gonna be on the block as well.

It's not so much a cosmetic issue with the shocks, it's safety. From the picture you posted, it looks as if your suspension travel is very limited due to the design of the rear and short shocks. If it was mine, I wouldn't want that to bind at any speed. I'm always trying to keep the shiny side up ;)

Ask the PO if you can trade it back for that beautiful little Yamaha mate, I think he saw you coming! ;D (sorry)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

ditto what was said before, the whole bike looks like it was built to a specific style (Early post modern douchebag maybe?) without any thought to functionality. I bet under full compression the tire hits all sorts of things (the seat, the frame cross bracing, etc). Plus a dropped rear with a stock front makes the bike handle like tossed feces. A good set of DOHC length shocks on there and it will be back to athletic status in no time.

given the quality of the work so far....I wouldn't trust that anything on that bike is done right. You traded your pretty yamaha for a restoration project you just don't know it yet. At least the paint is shiny so that saves you some expense.

Agreed on the styling but this bike has great potetial.   Prolly gonn slide the forks through the trees an inch or two. The tire doesn't bottom out on the frame with 400lbs bouncing and my 180lbs isn't gonna move it half that so I think theywill be fine. It obviosly isn't gonna be a two up bike anymore.

Also my "pretty" yamaha was faster than a corvette to 60 back in the day. .DON'T RAIN ON My parade man- twas a sweet trade plus cash!cleaned plugs and charged. Battery and she runs viscious on all fours(might need a top end but I am hoping that someone just way over jetted for those pods) the details are gonna work themselves out with help from positive input and sweat equty.   :)

Voltage means very little so a Voltmeter test on a battery tells you about 1/5 the story. The best thign to do to test a battery is hook it to a battery checker ( which puts a load on it) , and since no one has one in their garage, if the battery is at all suspect, jump the bike with a new or good battery. Hondas don't run well, IE cutting out running on one of the two cyls, three or two of the four....if the battery isn't good enough.

For a Vapor

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I would never (even being a Honda fan) trade a nice rare Yamaha 2 stroke twin for one. I could have made that Yamaha run like new and sold it here for $3500.00 easy!

It was running lke new. ,actually better than new as I timed it with a dial gaugee not the rotor marks which are notorious for being way off.... Even a mint rd 350 woukt bring 2.8-3 around here....it was a great deal don't be jealous!j)

Actually paid 300$ for it and have had several RD's

Yep, I have fond memories of riding on the back of my friend's Yamaha 350 @ 105 MPH when I was 15 years old, and just being amazed at what a brilliant bike they are.

In the real world you wouldn't catch one on a CB750 on a road that had more than one corner in it, I used to watch guys on Yamaha and Suzuki 2 strokes kicking big bike butt on the track, and they still do nowadays at the post classic races.

As much as I love CB750's, I'd never swap a bike as sweet as that for one. Nothing against the bike you traded it for, I just would have kept that Yamaha. Cheers, Terry. ;D
