BILL: Put a DYNA two step on that 750++automatic hooked to that left hand hydraulic brake lever that runs to those rear hydraulic brakes that  Mr. Weeks gave you folks to try out at a race, twist that throttle all the way open popping and crackling with RPM'S set  just under the stall on converter and let go of that brake lever on last yellow bulb. Run in the PRO-CLASS and you will be leaving first most every time running 12's and they will break out trying to get around you at 1319" trying to catch you if you get a .07 light or better = you got 12" at the end to work with to win or lose. I hope that bike has a shift light so you can get the same ET numbers , my girl friend rode down the return road and watched where I shift from L to D [ with a shift light ] at a event on my 400cc TURTLE she filmed it and it was at the same place on 9 race passes = which I won the KING OF THE TRACK NHRA street bike class. I never lifted and ran dead on the number w/.006 light in the final against 2012 Track Champion in ST/ET.  Those simple automatic's make you have a edge on those red lights, spinning, wheeling , missed a shift folks in the other lane. YOU WIN !!!!!!

Bill,

Good start with that chassis. Still some setting up to be considered per our conversation. Get the rear wheel mounted and set in the center of the adjustment range. Install the frontend- check the stiffness of the forks- you want them very firm with little or no travel. Put a dummy motor in the frame, and install the sidewinder with proper bracing on the meg. Air up both tires; the front at 30lbs, the rear at 8-9lbs depending on the footprint when you actually sit on the bike. Install the Tracy body in the correct position. At this point, check your ground clearance- you want the bike as low as possible but you must meet the 2 inch ground clearance rule for any component on the bike- don't fudge but maybe leave an inch or so to work with, say 3 inches. Slide the fork tubes up or down to get the right clearance. I'll explain later how to internally stiffen and lower the forks so none of the tube is sticking out of the top of the triples(there are rules about that too). Use a set of handle bars that allow you to lean as far forward as possible- flat z bars will be perfect but straight drag bars might be fine. Remember, on a wheelie bar bike, you need to position your body in a forward lean with your head down when launching the bike. Your arms should slightly bent  and down against your side. If you try to leave the line sitting up straight with your arms extended- the will bike take off and leave you sitting right where you started because your body will be snatched backwards and those extended arms and vertical spine alignment can't overcome the force from that slick hooking and the bar hitting the ground at 7500-8000 rpm's.

Once you've got the body on, the handle bars mounted, tires aired up, right ground clearance sit on the bike, lean forward, head down with your arms slightly bent but down by your side. Now bend your legs backwards to the point where your toes are on the ground but your heals are elevated.  Make certain you feel comfortable in this position as this is where you will install the foot pegs to be able to launch the bike at full throttle. Those pegs must be set so they will lock your body in place- take time getting this right. This bike is only being set up for you. Have your welder placed the pegs in this position with adequate bracing- a good deal of pressure will be applied when the bike takes off.

Once the bike is made into a roller, you can determine the wheelbase and move on to selecting which set of wheelie bars to use. Picked a set that closely matches the wheelbase of the bike. Get the welder to gusset the mounts well because those bars become your only life saving device once the bike launches. The bars should also be properly braced and rigid. The adjustment hiems should be in like new condition with no slop. The centerline alignment of the bars to the chassis should be perfect- no bends or curves to the left of right. We'll discuss further adjustment of the bars once you've completed the bike and prior to the maiden voyage.

I'm out!!!

Found time to pull Cobra engine...worst part wasn't pulling it, or putting it on handcart. It was the off camber downhill dirt run outback to basement door along with rocks and BabyFace biting the tires! ;D Then up the steps! Dave Buck coming in to visit tonight, so I'm waiting on him to put it on bench! ::) Yes,the days of picking it up from cart to bench by myself are over!! ;D Going to flip it upside down, check stud torque and pull sump pan!
The frame it came out of an oldie!

another

ready for bench! And yes was real careful on case studs.

More @ midnight! Off to clean up and start crock pot beef stew! 8)

SOHC BILL [ STROKER MOTOR -TURBO MOTOR - AUTO MOTOR ] :   You will need a pit crew of a dozen to keep all those bikes in the staging lanes ready for the next pass at a event.  Frank is giving you the RIGHT SCOOP on leaving on the bars, front wheel in the air past the 60' mark [ my 1978 KZ ZIR leaving at 9800 RPM's on 2 step and electric foot shifting at 10,500 rpms into 2nd gear was a blast ] but then 3-4-5 gear shifting a ride in the park. Bike Slammed, your head down, arms down, feet on pegs, toes on the ground and button shifting right on the shift light and the WIN LIGHT coming on in your lane = SOHC man you will want to race every day  !!!! I would bet that FRANK has smiled many times in his helmet on his bikes at the end of 1320' sitting up and turn switches off for the ride back the return road = Right FRANK ????? Riding to the time ticket shack to get that win ticket !!!!!

Hi Bill , would that be a starter nut on the end of the crank on the last photo ? . If it is , where do you reckon it came from , do you think it would be an RC part . cheers Greg "H".

Good catch on the starter nut Greg. This tells me Bill will need a good onboard starter activated at 24 volts to crank this monster. I cooresponded with Paul Cashio once about upgrading an SOHC unit to his Super Starter and he said it would be no problem. Might want to send him an email yourself. IF not, get your hands on a DOHC unit and see if it'll mess properly with the SOHC starter clutch gears.  Bill, please make provisions on the chassis for a 2nd, smaller battery and a place to mount a starter solenoid. Will need a starter button too.  Will talk you through the 24 volt hookup when the time comes.

Yeah Pops, i do have some track championships on my resume' on my KZ bar bike. Been on a dry spell lately so thats why i decided last year to put my old Honda back together so i could play around in street ET. It was once deadly consistent  and i was on top of my game. I'm a little bit older and i move slower now but feel i've still got it!!!

That looks about right Billy.
Will duck out and check our spare set.
From memory we went with the MA3's because they gave us a better stroke/rod ratio.
I think the MA3's are 1.5mm longer.
Give em a measure and let me know.

Cheers,
Brian

OK now I'm confused.  According to the specs the CB900F / CB1000 / CB1100 all have 69mm strokes.  So if the MA3 rod is longer, does that mean the 1100 crank is different than the others?

That's why I asked Billy to run the tape over them.
The stroke is the same but the rod may be a bit longer.

Then either the 1100 piston pin location, or barrels must be different if that's the case.  I was under the impression that the 900/1000/1100 stroke & barrels were the same, only the bores were different (64.5/67/70).

Not yet Brian, but think it may be time to do some investigation.  Noticed he's running a 'kit' RCB dry sump & dry clutch.  Wonder how much Unicorn poo it would take to get your hands on those.

Billy,
I've done some homework on the rods for you.
Have spoken to Don Saxton and Mick DeWith both Hy-Vo men.
I also emailed Brent Hyde in NZ, he's a DOHC guru.
They all agree. the MA3 rod's are far superior.
Attached is Brent's reply to my email.

Brian,
The MA3 rods are the ones to use not the 900. No question about it at all as even the bolts are superior in the MA3 rod.
But the MA3 has the larger 17mm pin.

I read the SOHC forum but am not a member so I don’t post but understand you are “Bear”on the site. It’s a good forum and is always interesting reading.

Regards,
 Brent

Brian,

I don't mean to be hijacking Billy's thread but is Brent Hyde related to the NZ Vince & Hyde Racing Team? I need to make a custom cam chain tensioner for a CB1100D, the newer retro model, and was wondering if it would be possible to find out what hybrid flavor of plastic, nylon, or whatever it is they are using on their latest custom made tensioners. From what I have read, they have done much research on this issue and seem to have a superior solution for the 1100F's.
