Remove throttle push cable
« on: July 26, 2016, 07:18:37 AM »
Hi!
I'm changing the throttle cables after replacing my handlebars.
Can't figure out how to remove the throttle push cable from the controls.
Seems it should go up through the controls but how?

Have you removed the nut on the bottom of the control housing where the 90* tube enters the housing?

Should be a nut or knurled ring which you should be able to loosen to remove it. (on the cable side)
You have turn the cable to unscrew it.

This is the push one without the threads. It's the 90 degree pipe I can't get off.
It seems I should be able to just pull it out but when I look up in the hole where the pipe is attached and turn the pipe, the area around the pipe doesn't rotate. Pretty odd.

The elbow must be removed from the housing. One elbow pushes in and is captured with a nut. The other elbow threads into the housing itself and is locked in place with a jam nut. You're not doing something right.

Post a picture of the underside of the housing in its current state.

If he is going to loosen it, wouldn't it be counter-clockwise? Don't want him to snap it off :) That cable has a lock nut that looks like it was removed? Just twist the elbow back and forth until it loosens up. Might just be stuck as 40 year old stuff tends to be.

What happens when you rotate the elbow counter clockwise (looking from below) ten or twelve turns?
The elbow doesn't have threads

did you rotate it?  does it not rotate?
There is no other way to get that end installed without turning the elbow out of its hole.

If he is going to loosen it, wouldn't it be counter-clockwise? Don't want him to snap it off :)

What's the difference between "counter clockwise" and "counter-clockwise" besides the dash?  ???  ;)
Just the dash! Sorry reading without glasses over the age of 50 can be hazardous to my health.

After wiggling and wiggling it came out and I got the new one in. Any comments on my cable routing? I guess I could go between the headlight and clocks and also the return cable could maybe be lifted and enter the carbs from a little higher. Do you know the low bars factory routing?  The old cables with the higher bars went on the right of the frame but these shorter cables are too long for that

What holds it in? Does that one have the threaded collar/nut to hold it in place? Surely it's not just a "press fit"?

I know, I know, "Don't call me Shirley"!  :o  ;)  ;D

Cable routing looks similar to mine, except that mine roll down and under the fuel tank on the right instead of the left. The most important thing is that as you swing the bars from stop to stop left and right that the cables don't bind and they don't snag anything.  8)

The reason it seemed odd was that the collar on the elbow was loose and didn't turn with the elbow. That made me think that it was fastened with a circlip or something.
