Are these still good?
« on: November 21, 2016, 07:25:20 PM »
Hi guys it's been a loooonnnngggg time since I've posted. But need y'alls opinion on these brake pads. Are these still good? Need a new tube, so figured while the tire is off, might as well check the brakes. Appreciate yalls time/experience.

Bike has been lonely in the garage way too long, reason why I haven't posted in so long. Buddy got a fancy Harley, and wants to ride. Motivated me to get her out in the sun.

they just look dirty, if there's any white corrosion between the backing and the friction material toss them. I've seen the friction  lining come off.

If replacing, should I just get genuine Honda or are there better options worth paying for?

The linings look okay, but as Don mentioned, with age they can separate from the shoe. Pads are cheap insurance if you do not know the age of the linings then might be best to replace. Even aftermarket brakes would perform better than linings that separate from their shoe.  ;)

they are fine. just vash and re use
.but your floor is crached serios

you have this indikations for Wear..on the brake lever..just thek them..think there is used the half of the material..so 40 years left to use..before hit the limit

thek for korosion../ for loosen brake material

hov is the hub looking..mine had korosion ,,vho cracked the hub..so the cast iron surface vas badly cracked

Barely broken in. Good to go. Just clean - look for any grease contamination and clean with acetone if you see any dark spots. Wash the linings with acetone as well. A scrape with medium wet/dry paper won't hurt the linings either.
If this is a high-mileage bike, the rider knew how to brake properly. I've seen rear linings worn to the backing because the front brake is too "scary" to EVER use.

Thanks guys. Still a little confused though, some say replace while others say still good. They seem to still have quite a bit of meat left.

The issue isn't usable brake material, but that some have been known to come unbound from the shoe. Pretty unlikely, but your call.

Thanks guys. Still a little confused though, some say replace while others say still good. They seem to still have quite a bit of meat left.

Do you know how old they are? If they are original pads (over 40 years old) and if the lining separates from the shoe under high speed braking and locks up the rear wheel and you go down on asphalt, you just have to ask yourself...

how much meat will be left on your bones when you stop sliding?

Original Honda shoes are less than $40: http://www.hondapartsnation.com/oemparts/p/honda/06430-393-405/shoe-kit-brake

Aftermarket shoes (Vintage CB750 Part #: 29-3121) can be had for less than $25 (scroll down): http://www.vintagecb750.com/products/2/chassis-brakes/39/brakes-brake-hose

The age of the shoes would be my only concern. If the previous owner replaced them within the last 10 years or so (provided the bike was not stored outside, exposed to the elements) then you would probably be fine.

Otherwise, new shoes are cheap insurance. I've got enough to worry about as far as "cagers" trying to run me over without flinging myself down on the asphalt as a result of a failed brake shoe locking up the rear wheel. Sure, you could use them, there is indeed plenty of pad left on the shoe, and they might work well until they are worn to their service limit without any issues, and you could replace them then. I've used old shoes without issue (back when I was younger... and invincible), but I've also had old shoes sitting on the shelf that had the linings fall off. Ultimately it's your hide and your decision to make.  :-\

^yes.
We put a lot of faith in old shiit here.
New pads/brake lines are no-brainers.  I liken it to original tires with good tread (but cracked and hard as a rock).
Small change in the grand scheme of things.

Wise move. How old are your tires? The date code is easy to read once you've read them a few times:

http://www.tirebuyer.com/education/how-to-determine-the-age-of-your-tires

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11

As for tires, you will get many opinions. In my opinion, the cheapest new tire will outperform any 40 year-old tire, and in many cases will perform better than the old tire, even when that old tire was new. I will save a little on tires but I do try to splurge a little on a better quality tube (i.e. not the cheapest tube I can find).

If you have to ask with those rear shoes, replace them. I thought mine looked fine too until they broke apart and locked my rear wheel going about 40. Went sideways and somehow didn't go down. Scared the hell out of me.

Like Stryn said let the wear indicator on the brake arm be the judge but if you think they are original I say replace.

That would be the "50"th week of 2010, so they were manufactured in November of 2010. Six years old, which is a reasonable age to consider retiring them. I've run older tires, but I was younger and invincible then too!

If you have to ask with those rear shoes, replace them. I thought mine looked fine too until they broke apart and locked my rear wheel going about 40. Went sideways and somehow didn't go down. Scared the hell out of me.

Holy cow Nick! Is the lining missing from the other shoe? Is that what caused the lock up?

As for Honda shoes or aftermarket shoes, I've used both with success. Nick's shoes pictured above appear to be genuine Honda, but likely very old.

Yeah, I think so. Lining is missing and somehow it caused the big crack. Wheel was totally locked up.

The outer friction lining that is bonded to the metal shoe. The friction surface (lining) separated from one of Nick's brake shoes and got wedged between the other shoe and the drum causing the lock up he described. I knew it was possible, I've just never experienced first hand thank goodness!

It looks like pieces of the friction "lining" still laying inside the hub in Nick's picture.

I've had 2 sets of 40 year old shoes separate on me over the years.   Those are now on my "replace immediately" check list.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

This lining.  Compare the marked areas.
Looks like the lining on the lower shoe de-laminated, spun in the drum, and cracked the other shoe

You can google-fu the brake pad part number and come up with a few options.
OEM Honda may still be available.  EBC is a brand I have used in the past without issue.

Tires are plentiful.
I went with Avon AM26 Roadriders on my 350F.  Dang nice tire if youre ok with a more modern tread pattern.
Metzeler Lazertecs and Bridgestone BT45s have more of a traditional pattern, and are just as good.

IRC Durotour and Shinko 712s are decent budget options.  Im running the Shinkos on my 750 are they are fine.
