Storage/Fumes/Health Question
« on: December 12, 2016, 04:59:44 PM »
I am not looking to winterize and store my bike (Ill be riding her on non-downpour & non-snow days)

Usually I store my bike outside uncovered.  My roommate has a studio in the garage where she operates a torch and does her metalsmithing thing.  Also, she runs a few space heaters.  Just recently she told me that the bike was giving off some fumes?

Are there any health risks and air quality issues that I should just move it back outside into the rain/snow? I recently purchased a cycleshell enclosure and set that up in the garage (since my driveway is sloped, and i have no other flat ground around my home besides street parking)  Hopefully the enclosure will seal in some of the smells?  Should I purchase a carbon monoxide detector or something?  How long should I let the bike sit outside before sticking the bike inside the garage in the enclosure?

Thanks for reading,
Mike

I'd think metal-smithing and space heaters would stink as much as an old bike?!  Carbon monoxide detector is never a bad idea.. gas smell or just "old bike smell"?  Giver' a good wash & stuff a bunch of dryer sheets around it, buy her a nice candle to light.  Side note, my rents have a 5th wheel that when winterized with dryer sheets stuffed all over the place has not had mouse issues.  Prior to doing that they had some chewed wires & mouse dens.

Turn the fuel off first and let the bike run a few minutes before turning it off. No need to run the bowls completely dry, just run the fuel level in the bowls down some. When the engine is cool to the touch (couple hours tops) roll it into the garage and cover it up. Metalsmithing with torches probably generates more noxious fumes than a stationary (not running) motorcycle could ever exude in a hundred years. My bikes stay in the garage and the only time they have ever stunk up the joint was the result of a fuel leak, which is usually avoided by turning off the fuel valve first.  ;)

Your roommate isn't overly sensitive is she?  :o  I would expect a metalsmith to be able to handle any foul smells (real or imagined) better than your average Joe (or Jane).  ::)

Now if she were developing perfume formulas or photographing swimsuit models I might be a little more sympathetic...  ;D

+1 on the fuel precautions, then bring it on in. In my single days, I parked in
the kitchen for the winter. Rags underneath were for small oil leak at neutral switch.
I had 3 bikes in there at one point, without issues.
Wife sez  I can still park there, but bike might clash with the new kitchen set..

A very small leak stinks far more than anything. wipe a rag or hand around your petcock and fittings, it doesn't take much to put that gasoline odour into the air.

You may sprinkle some drops of Chanel No.5 on your bike and see if that works.

Bike should not emit carbon monoxide if the engine is not running.
Wish I could store mine in the kitchen over winter but it wont fit between the shower and the toilet.

Not that long ago I've read that an inbuilt garage is considered to be the worst polluter of the air inside a home.

Love the MZ Strynboen. Does that headlight has it's own will, meaning it will shine straight when you're in the curve of the road? That's quite an exhaust! Looks like some sort of flamethrower. :)

yes its straight light..not as citroen..vho turn the parabol inside the housing...get used to ridie it..you lern the speciel tecnic..to turn,,in small curves to light araund the corners...and the speciel front fork is also a bit thallinging..ir reises by braking.(at lov speed)..is neutral at heiger speeds.not diving ,,,as a telescope fork..
the build kvality is near West germany kvality..and some of the best of the East bikes...the engine have main crankshaft bearings in the gear oil...so the 2 stroke oil/gas..is only lubrikating piston  and cylender..so not mutch oil is needet...it have a Sealed fuel tank..a kind of sealer or galvanicing its silver..and absolut no rust in this tanks..
it called the banan in denmark...frontfender gives it..

runs better then most Yamaha dt 125..aircooled..is strong in the low rpm areia...

Not that long ago I've read that an inbuilt garage is considered to be the worst polluter of the air inside a home.

It smells nice! Ventilation system in kitchen, washing room and bath rooms suck air from garage if door is not closed
But women will complain of course! I have one that complains sometimes when I have used acetone, thinner, painted some parts, oil spill on rags etc.  She does not like when I use the compressor either! Despite it is a low sounding one

Or direct after a ride and it will smoke a little from the pipes.
I have one door between the garage to the washing room (fire proof steel door and a std inside door to the house (entrance)

I had the car in garage before my bike came back home. That smelled too.

Petcocks can seep, gas tanks get pinholes, the carbs seep or evaporate out the vents. If you've never rebuilt the petcock, check that. The bottom line is, don't blow her up with gas fumes, that's hard on a relationship.
