anybody making brake lines anymore?
« on: October 22, 2018, 09:46:55 AM »
Can't find slinghot anymore.  Need some custom lines.   Are there any do-it-at-home kits or brands you guys use?
Just need a simple stainless braided line for my XR
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I like Goodridge lines. You can get any length you need, pick the ends to suit and you are good to go. Lines come in black or clear and ends come in chrome steel or SS.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I used Apex for the lines on my 550. They don't charge much extra for custom and the process was pretty painless.

The largest hydraulic hose maker in Orlando, FL will not fabricate brake lines due to "liability" concerns. Making my own was easy enough with lines and fittings using Goodridge connectors.  8)

My local shop does it all the time.  Pressure tested to about 10X what you'd experience with a master cylinder and , usually,  less than Slingshot,  Apex, etc, have charged me in the past. Made while I wait, to my specifications,  in a couple different colors.
The only difference I see is that the clamps on the fittings aren't quite as.... slim... as some of the other vendors. Not huge, not ugly, just not quite as svelte.  No one has ever noticed.

I actually work at a hydraulics shop (unfortunately, we just build hoses for our own mining equipment and nothing for "public consumption")  The hose and crimps we use that are suitable size for brake lines (Parker stuff...1/8" hose with -4 hose ends)is rated for 3000psi.  I am curious what kind of pressure is generated by a motorcycle braking system?
If it works good, it looks good...

I have had them made at a hydraulics shop. I just didn't mention "brake line".
I have used Russel brake line kits - various lengths of cable with some sort of flare connector on each end, and adapters to fit your banjo or flare. They are DOT approved.

I was looking at Goodridge lines yesterday looks like you can order different lengths and fitting to make custom line. Seems straight forward.

Do you guys use front brake switches when making a custom line? Stock or anyone use one that mounts at the master cylinder?

I like to delete the switch block as it loves to trap air bubbles for a poor lever feel. A switch banjo at the mc works great.

Know of any banjo switches that fit with the stock master cylinder? I don't see anything like that at the typical CB part sources.

Any M10x1.25 banjo switch will work. vintageCB750.com has them.

I have never had any issues with air bubbles in my front brakes when replacing the lines, going to dual. My K6 has the stock brake switch.
My Goodridge kit has line from brake switch direct to caliper, a little bit thick beside the fender. I use lines with the stock model tubes from calipers now since its really tight on right side, fender - fork (Kit from Slingshot).

Connect everything, fill brake fluid. Tank and painted areas nearby covered with an old clean cotton sheet.
Pump the MC, using brake. Open up the bleeder screw on caliper. Easier if there is a tube connected on it leading the fluid in a jar.  Press brake lever in, let it flow from caliper via the tube. Close bleeder and release brake lever. Pump some again, keep lever in while open the bleeder, let it flow. Close bleeder and release lever. Fill fluid before it can take air.
Do this sometimes until it stop coming bubbles down the caliper bleeder. I have noticed that air will bubble up via the MC too. Do not pump too hard with no cap since it squirts. Pump here until bubbles stop coming at MC too.

I thought that dual should be tricky, but no problem. My MC is a few years old, cheap aftermarket from DSS, calipers have new seals and pistons. One caliper is DSS aftermarket caliper, a copy.

Know of any banjo switches that fit with the stock master cylinder? I don't see anything like that at the typical CB part sources.

Any M10x1.25 banjo switch will work. vintageCB750.com has them.
Cool source, thanks!
