Thanks Duanob,totty and Larry,
 Larry,
how long have you had your Brother HL-2270DW? and where did you get it for 70 ?
if I buy online, ebay, etc. will that kill any warranty ?
                                                                                 Thanks

Staples and I've had it for less than a year.  Every time I go to use it it works flawlessly, no screwing around cleaning cartridges and wasting ink.

no screwing around cleaning cartridges and wasting ink.

Another plus for toner... nearly indefinite shelf life.

if you go hp brand 100 for toner. It has to be going on 15 years old. I can check the back if you want specific date.

Laser jet sure sounds good,I do 90% black and white and that's all I need for now.
I looked on the local CL but couldn't find any HP laser printers for sale.
Can you list those model #'s for me that you think are good again ? Thanks

I noticed a Brother mod.DCP-7065DN laser printer NiB a year ago for $100 on CL.
Does this seem like a good one for me ? I know it's large but that"s alright.

fenders,
I Need to know if this printer will work for me and how much a replacement toner cartridge will be when I need one. I can purchase it before it's sold on CL because I do need a printer and plan on spending $100 anyway....,but I can wait if it isn't a good idea  ??? ?
                          Thanks for your helpful feedback,

Well, I design for HP, so that's what I'm going to recommend. I work on only the high-end stuff, and not the low end, though I did set a strategy in place for some of the design of the hardware to make life easier for the user for those.

Sounds like you're set on Laser. That's what I do because the technology is infinitely more interesting. Laser is going to be more expensive, but there's some big pros to it. Toner doesn't dry out, and your pages won't be "wet". With that said, laser has improved its quality on photos quite a damned bit though, so you'd be surprised that the difference isn't as much as it used to be for photos on ink vs laser.

Highlighting laser prints doesn't work to well. Highlighting ink prints works pretty well.

To be fair, there's high end ($700 and above) ink printers out there from HP that will do automatic cleaning (spits ink into a reservoir) so that the print heads don't dry out. I've designed this flow for these.

Do you want a single function, or a multi function printer? Is scanning important to you?

Color or Mono?

In all fairness, if you want a basic Laserjet printer, so go visit Bestbuy, Staples, etc. Pick one that you will like. They will all plug up to a computer and print. You can't really go wrong.

If you want ink, I think the HP Envy Printer looks pretty cool....

What operating system are you using? We have a perfectly good HP laserjet at work, but can't get drivers for Windows 7. HP's response is "buy a new printer". The only drivers are for Windows XP, so if you are sporting a newer operating system then I would verify driver availability if you are considering an older printer. Newer printers would not have this issue, just be aware of this potential limitation if you are looking at an older printer to use with a newer operating system.

Again, Newegg has four printers for less than $100, excellent return policy for defective items (they will even pay for return shipping in many cases), and more free shipping than any other e-tailer I've ever seen.

As for the Brother DCP-7065DN, are 81 reviews enough opinions for you?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113660

What kind of return policy does your ebay (or craigslist) sellers have?

fenders is right, for personal use most laserjets are more than up to the task. Longer duty cycles usually=more money.

OK,
black & white will work;the guy also said it has a scanner & it'll scan a color image and be able to upload it into my computer.I don't ever much need to do color copies.
I have Windows XP and this has the CD so I'm hoping I have the drivers necessary for me to hook it up.
