Rip Russ and my condolences to the Collins family, A great Guy i had the pleasure of meeting a few times on my trips to the US.
Russ and the boys always took the time to say hello, And the memory's of the bikes running the quarter with us all holding our breath WOW no one can take that away.

Russ Collins was someone that I read about in the magazines in the late 70's as a teen, and always admired. I was amazed at his innovative designs, and his shear courage to ride those designs. Like a two wheel test pilot, he had The Right Stuff. I wish that I could have met him.

Too early! I hoped too see him watching the mighty triple back on the strip again.
RC still is something very special as I learned here in Sweden over 35 years ago. My bike has 836 RC pistons so I'll have RC in my mind.

My Dad asked me to get a copy of this picture for our collection...as he had not seen it until printed in National Dragster in Sept 2012....said it was a very special moment as it was just 7 seconds later, he won his 1st NHRA "Wally"...this was taken at 2am on a Monday morning at the 75 Summernationals (rain delayed). This was the same event that he won the 1st Best Engineered Car award.

I was standing ten feet back of this shot as I had just wiped the tire off. I can smell the nitro, hear the engines roll up to about 5K and then off he shot to a power wheel stand , set it down and coasted through the traps...at some insane speed for a shut off. Our good friend Bob Mauriello red lit the other lane or it would be another day for that trophy.

Well, I had trouble getting this photo until today...when Phil Burgess of National Dragster sent it to me...while asking for details for his ND obit.

You are all seeing history right here and I am so blessed to have been there. Thanks Dad.

While I am tempted to hope that Russ Collins Sr. will rest in peace, I'm more inclined to wish that he's somewhere less peaceful, enjoying an endless variety of raucous, nitro-gulping fast rides, pulling low E.T.s and big MPH numbers. My sincere condolences to the family.

I've been sitting on this post not knowing exactly what to say. I met him twice. First time I was with my boss, only a few years older than me, who had worked for RC. ca. 1971. Russ was on the floor of a new shop, painting the woodwork. When he finished a strip, he took us to dinner. It was a Denny's type of place. I was 18 and my only concern was that I got a free dinner. I didn't know.

Many years later I met him again at the Cinncy Dealer Show. Got an autographed photo. The ubiquitous one, cigar, white suit and medalion, holding a header. He was wearing the same get up. Medallion might have been a Kruggerand.

Man, this chokes me up. My sympathies to all.
