Went out to the garage today and removed the rear suspension. Shocks are getting canned unless I can figure out something fun or creative to do with them. EVERYTHING is covered in a thick coat of oil from a year of leaks. Not happy about trying to clean everything off. Degreasers and cleaners are going to bankrupt me.

Will be removing the swingarm bearings. I'll be using the hacksaw method, but I had a quick question. HondaMan's guide says to keep the saw parallel, does that mean I'll be cutting through the center spacer thing as well? Or am I just cutting into the bearings themselves?

Read some stuff in Hondaman's book & I have been cleaning up the K1's exhaust system.

I'm concerned that the unleaded fuel is going to rust it out quickly though - need to look into that

Is it a new pipe Brooksey? It wasn't unusual for HM300's to rust out in the first year or two of their life, but if yours are new, add a small amount (20 or 30 ml) of two stroke oil to every tank of fuel and the oil smoke will "fog" oil mist into every nook and cranny within your pipes, and protect them from rusting. Think about it, how many old two strokers have you ever seen with rusted out exhaust systems? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Today:

Bought a pair of paddock stands so I can work on bikes with both wheels in the air.

Installed a new 33 tooth sprocket on the CB450.

Took the VFR750 for a ride.

Cleaned out and rearranged my (cupboard sized) shed to create some space.

Sorted out some old junk for a garage sale in a couple of weeks (old tools and junk, no bike parts).

Listed some excess CB450 parts on eBay.

Looked at a 1985 VF1000F on eBay...

Thanks Cliff, (and Joe) if you buy that VF1000F I'll sell you my rare VF1000F workshop manual which you'll definitely need mate, 'cos (here comes another useful nugget from "The Nugetteer") the VF1000F was just about the biggest POS that Honda built in the 1980's. No joke, they were so bad Honda couldn't fix them so they just moved on and left VF1000F owners to suffer in (pre-internet) silence.

Honda wouldn't dare build a bike that bad again nowadays, they'd be "outted" on a grand scale. An old non-motorcycle friend of mine "inherited" one back in the early 1990's, with the intention of fixing it up and selling it for a profit. The local Honda shop said that they wouldn't even have it in their shop and parts were no longer available. He ended up giving it to Jeff at Ace Wreckers, because Jeff wouldn't give him any money for it. "The Nuggetteer says NO"! (but I'll still sell you my manual) ;D

Here's some VF1000F info: http://vfreek.tripod.com/id11.html

Well what a diference a day makes. 24 hours ago it was cold, wet and miserable. I sat in my comfy chair looking out the patio window trying to make myself understand how it could still be winter in Oz in October? Today though, the sun was shining, the birds were probably singing, and all was right with the world.

Better still, the wife had gone out and left me to my own devices. I'd promised to mow the lawn, but of course, 5 minutes after she'd cleared the driveway, I was "headin' down the highway, looking for adventure, and whatever comes my way". I put 3 US gallons of 98 RON fuel in my tank ($19 US, Ouch!) and rode up into the mountains. I had a great day, although my back has been giving me some trouble so after a little over 3 hours and 100 miles I'd had enough for the day, and turned for home. I love this time of year, roll on summer! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey Terry - if you ever want company on a Sunday ride, call me!

BTW - I kinda knew about the VF1000F issues...

Today someone from Iceland bought a tank off me, he better be ready for a big postage cost!

New clutch cable to replace overlong non standard one, looks much neater now.

Replaced left side covers with allen head screws, tensioned chain and counted sprocket teeth.  Sprockets seem to be standard 17/38 think I'll leave it that way.  Need a new chain though I think just not sure what to get.

Got a price back on a new MAC 4 into 1 $360 plus $120 postage to Australia, decisions decisions...  any thoughts?

And of course had to go for a ride to test it all out!

Changed the oil in the K5. The harvest Classic is next week!
Drained the oil, didn't spill a drop. Not even on the Kerker. Yay, I'm so clever.....
Checked the old oil for sparklies, found only the "normal" amount. (Very few.)

Then I decided to finally try one of those neat-O keen chrome spin-on filters with the adapter I bought last year.

Spun it on, hey this is easy! Tightened it down like every other spin-oil filter I've installed over the last ~35 years.
Filled the bike with fresh 20-50 Castrol T4, spun the starter a bit, then started the bike.
Fifteen seconds later the o-ring seal on the chrome filter blew out and spewed oil all over the Kerker and the floor! :o >:( >:(
Talk about instant rejection from the K5!

Ok, fine, that's the end of that experiment. Perhaps I'll approach it again later but for today it's back to stock.

For Terry's amusement I will quote him here:
Ha ha, I've had a box full of those big crappy chrome spin on filters and have used them on and off for years, I put one on, it leaks, I take it off and replace it with a better "brand name" filter, then a year or two later I forget and put another one on, it leaks, I take it off, and so on and so forth. If you can get one that doesn't leak, use it by all means! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I can't say I wasn't warned.  Now, off to wash the beast so it's shiny for next week. ....And clean up the oil from the shop floor.  At least it's clean oil. ::) *sigh*

Well, to reference Terry again, there are a couple name-brand filters that in theory would work better.
I'll wait until the next oil change and see if I'm brave enough to try it again. I'm still sold on the idea of it. ;D

Now I'm going to do a favor to everyone I'll be riding with next week and finally disconnect the turn signal buzzer on the K5. ;)

Took my 550 out for what may have been it's last ride of the season, it turned out to be a nice day and was tempted to have my wife put on her helmet and ride with me but good thing I didn't ask because we had a storm coming in and the cross winds were nasty. Once I got back though I started wrenching on the 175, I got the ign coil I nabbed off ebay and got the bike together enough to fire up and sure enough the crazy thing did. Only problem now is that my volt meter showed it's charging system wasn't doing squat.

After replacing the coin seals under the cam towers on Friday on my "interim" project, test drove it yesterday only to have the motor continue to belch oil out onto my leg. Took the motor back out today. On a positive note, my homemade C-hook has enabled me to pull an engine from a fully assembled and running bike in just 90 minutes start to finish! A new personal record!

What's the sawzall for you ask?

To remove a little extra material! It has since had the rough edges filed off and touch-up paint applied.
