Need a part # - or grip removal advice
« on: November 30, 2010, 03:01:07 PM »
Sorry to post this because I know the info is on here somewhere, but I'm not having any luck finding it.   :-\  I'd like to find the part number for the plastic sleeve part of the throttle control that one would glue a grip to.  Just a simple link to where I could look would be great, I don't mind doing the searching.  Thanks in advance!

The reason is that I can't get these old grips off.  So, alternatively, I wouldn't mind advice on how to get these damn things off.  They're metal with no visible screws of any kind to remove.  If they were rubber I would just cut them off.

They look very similar to these:

The black lines on them seem to be part of an internal rubber grip.  I can only assume that these come in two pieces and you would glue on the rubber grip, then press the chrome housing over top of it until the rubber part pops out through the slots, making them seemingly impossible to remove from my perspective.

Offline Really?

Thought I got mine from Motion Pro but do not see them there.  What year/model bike do you have?

Good luck getting that off if it glued!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

My bike is a CB550.  I don't think I'll be able to "skin" these grips without getting the metal housing off first, that's the problem.

I think "throttle sleeve" was the keyword I needed to be able to find this thing.  I didn't know what it was called.

Thanks a bunch!

Is it item #8 (pipe, throttle grip) in this link? Looks like it's still available from Honda parts.

Bang off the ends of the aluminium grips. The aluminum piece will then slide out off the end. The ends are plastic so they will probably just shatter to make it easy.
Then you can just cut the foam off. ;)

Or use a dremel to cut the outer aluminum casing in half lengthwise, then all that's left is the rubber.

Could there be a small hidden allen screw that removes a mounting bolt cover?  It had to be installed at some point, and I doubt the rubber was injected into the grip while on the bars....

crkhohobbit I have the very same grips my left one slides right off it is not glued on if you take a dremel or something cut the end off and then the rest of the metal part will slide off then you can cut the rubber part off.

Mine are similar and there is no separating them.
The throtle is a one piece design that incorporates the sleeve.
