center stand mod? (updated 8/7/12)
« on: June 11, 2012, 04:16:12 PM »
i can probably figure this out myself but i thought id see what other people have done

i have an aftermarket 4-1 with my own mufflers. sooooooooooooooooooo when the center stand goes up it hits my chain since it dosnt rest on some bumper thing on the stock exhaust.

i know im not the only one with this problem so what did u do?

i really dont want to take off the center stand because its so nice to have working on the bike and places that have mooshy grounds

I did this.  Quick & dirty. It was supposed to temporary but it's still there.  I did paint it black finally. ::)

You'll find some other ideas here.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=79609

The deleted pic was just a bracket/tab mounted to one of the bolts which hold the centerstand axle and positioned to keep the stand out of the way. It would have to be substantial enough not to get bent over time or when the stand comes thumping up. The pic of mine has remained unchanged for a couple of years now. still does the job.

dang i wish the picture was still there!

but ya that was my original plan using the bolts that hold the center stand to try and stop it from going up.

I did the same as CycleRanger except I used an "L" shaped bracket instead. I can probably post a pict tomorrow evening.

I had the same problem too when I took the mufflers off my bike and noticed a strange grinding sound.  Finally found the problem of the chain grinding away at the foot of the center stand.  It normally used the mufflers as a bumper, which had a nice dent from it slamming up into them.  It's now stripped down to the frame so I'm going make a permanent stopper to keep it from damaging a new exhaust.

I have my stock exhaust and just recently started hearing a funny noise only to find out that the chain was rubbing the center stand.  I figured my chain was real loose so I had plans to tighten it friday.  I wonder if I should check if there was a little bumber that has gone missing?

You can use the pinch bolts on your centre stand. Bolt to them, a piece of flat stock steel about 1/8" by 1.25" by the width of the bolts. You need to notch it for the c shaped peice of steel holding the spring. I sold the bike I did that to. It looked very clean. I've also used the new muffler mount points to hang a centre stand stop from. That works too. Muffler hides it.

Yeah, mine was really an after thought. When I got the bike it had no center stand.
Some day, in the far future, when I run out other bikes to restore, I'll fabricate something more eloquent.
I like your idea of making something to attach to the pinch bolts.

VintageCB750.com sold me a center stand stop piece of metal for a few bucks. Works like a charm so far. Bad pic, but it's attached to the rod that stops the rear hub from spinning.

The MAC exhaust comes with an L-bracket that you bolt on to the passenger peg bracket. Works decently, but over time mine got weaker and will bend after a few days. I'm just waiting for it to break -.-

I had a MAC 4-1 on my 550 for about a week (didn't like it) and because it was used and didn't come with the L-bracket for the center stand, I had to come up with my own solution.  Rather than mount a bracket on the bike, I made a little "tab" out of some scrap steel and mounted it to the center stand itself.  The "feet" of the center stand are hollow, so they are easy to drill through.  I mounted this to the top surface of the right foot of the stand with two large self-drilling screws and then slipped a piece of rubber tubing over the end to keep it from "clanging" when it went up to the bike.  The tab catches the rear brake stay on the right side of the bike.  Works for me.

Wow, my bike is dirty huh?   ???

I'll throw my hat into the ring... I have tried variations of each of the methods mentioned previously, but recently I adopted a more permanent solution by welding a thick piece of steel flat stock to the center stand itself which hits on the frame and limits travel when in the fully retracted position.

The bent one came with my Mac exhaust

It mounted like this.

They have them at http://www.cb750supply.com/products/7/exhaust for $4 - scroll down.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

totally forgot to update the thread but this is what i ended up doing

just took some big washers and put them on both sides. then pulled up on the center stand hard to bend the washers the way i wanted it so the center stand is at the perfect height when it was up and it just sits there happy now  :)
