I narrowed down two options for my motorcycle holiday this year - Nova Scotia or Tail of the Dragon Tour - the decision went to the latter.

If you are looking at getting some excitement this summer, need to get away and have an adventure, live on a motorcycle for 9 days, and ride some pretty good roads then this trip is for you!

Leaving from: Boston, MA

Dates: Saturday 15th June to Sunday 23rd June

Destination: Tail of the Dragon and more importantly surrounding roads (e.g.  Cheroohala Skyway,NC etc etc).

Accommodation: not sorted yet -mixture of camping and cheap motels; open to ideas

Who is coming? - Anders (alternator upgrade guy) has already signed up.

Who is it open to? - anyone with good riding experience who can handle these technical roads: tight twisties combined with long sweepers. Just as important bike needs to be in good shape!

SOHC members along the route - want to meet some SOHC riders from New England? Then let me know. Have some time to show us some local roads - even better!

Want to come? Then sign up!

Hope to meet some of you in June!
cheers
Andy

As I was born in Tupper Lake, N.Y., seeing the pictures you had from last years Adirondack trip, makes me homesick. You could have crossed into NY at Port Kent by ferry from Burlington VT.  Outside of Tipper Lake (rt30) there is a place called Bog River Falls. Beautiful place to picnic, and swim under an stone arched bridge where the water flows into Raquette River. There is also Asable Chasm which has boats that travel through the chasm.

Thanks for pics.   Bob Papin

Popular dates, I will be in the area sometime during that time.  Been to the Dragon from Toronto 5 times thus far with another crowd.  I haven't picked a route yet, looking to enjoy the run down and back instead or charging there and back as I done the TN and NC roads enough.  Hope to run into you whilest I am there, I'll be watching for the CB750 crowd...  8)

Oh I wish I could go....was just down there at the beginning of May.

If you are interested in camping while in the Deals Gap area, might I suggest the Fontana Campground?  That's where we usually stay when going for the big MINI Cooper rally.  The campground is not very big, quite secluded and quiet, and the campsites (especially the ones with electric hookups) are HUGE....you can easily get 4 or 5 tents on them, although that's probably not technically allowed.  It's near the base of the dam which is kinda neat and you are right off of 28 which leads to 129.  Unless the atmosphere changes drastically and it fills up with leather chap-wearing Harley guys (I doubt it), I highly recommend it.

There are lots of motels/hotels around the area.  I always have wanted to stay at the Tuskeegee Motel.  It's kind of cool 1960s/1970s retro looking (i'm sure the rooms are ugly and outdated), but it's small and appears to be VERY well kept.  Would be a great spot for a small group to stay and have a home base for a couple of days.  It's also on highway 28 towards Robbinsville.  http://tuskeegeemotel.com/

Have fun!!!! :)

We usually stay at the Jameson Inn in Alcoa only a 20 min ride to the Tail and the staff refill the ice in the cooler in the Partylot while we're out riding during the day.  How good is that???

Putting together a route from Boston to North Carolina for the 15th June - anyone got some great roads they want to share that we might include in our trip planning? I think we are good for when we get there but for traveling through CT, NY, PA etc all suggestions welcome.

thanks

Andy,

Watch your speed on Skyline Drive (toll) and Blue Ridge Parkway. They DO issue speeding tickets. I thought I heard one guy say 50 is the magic number on one of them. VERY hard to stay less than 10 over. I had very little traffic but your ride won't be that lucky with the summer season in play. Be safe.

Blue Ridge Parkway has lots of animals, not uncommon to see deer and a few bobcat around dark or at night. So, beware of the critters, they can ruin your ride if timing is bad.

+1 and the animals are like a petting zoo, very easy to run into one.

THE BRP is a nice ride but like some have said , some parts are like riding through a zoo without fences. Worst times are early morning and just about dark, of course every kind of critter is out after dark. You might just run into some REDNECK out HOWLING at the MOON cause he's got his SHINE on!!!
