Just received this photo today. It's our house after the 1940 Armistice Day Blizzard. The Nov 11th storm killed 145 people in the Midwest including 49 in Minnesota and 66 on three freighters that went down on Lake Michigan. Temps were in the 60's during the afternoon but by evening it was in the single digits, 50 mph wind, and 1-3 feet of snow. About half of those from Minnesota were duck hunters caught out on the Mississippi River. The photo came from the granddaughter of the lady who was the original owner of our house. We bought it from Grannies estate and are the second owners (built 1923). She recently married a friend of a friend and at the wedding realized we lived in Grandma's house.

We still have that screen door....solid heavy all metal construction....better than anything I could buy today. And that ice dam on the roof is still there too.

Record breaking cold here -14f last night, old record -8f.
-12f here right now, another record breaker.
We are "lucky" here as our weather is tempered a bit by the lakes.

I read a cold story this morning about the CG cutter Hollyhock icebreaking at Mackinac for the 1000 footer Mesabi Miner loaded with iron ore. Hollyhock got stuck, Mesabi Miner following couldn't/didn't stop, resulting collision, no injuries, both ships punctured above waterline. Hollyhock is docked at St. Ignace, Mesabi Miner is being escorted to Gary, Indiana.
Some dedicated, hard working guys out there for sure.

Crazy weather here............. 14" of snow on Friday..........looking at green grass today, with temperatures in the teens for the next couple of days. Then, I hear it will be in the 50's on Saturday.

It's gonna be an interesting winter.

PS: I don't usually talk about the weather, but I am trying to make some insignificant posts to get over the "5" threshold so I can post pics and links.

Minus 19 today on my way to work compared to minus 21 yesterday. Up to minus 9 at noon. All schools closed again today do to wind chill. This weekend we are supposed to warm up to 32...that is about a 50 degree turnaround. Have to love this global warming

Here, they closed all the roads near me, ($250 fine if caught on road) thank god I got beer yesterday more of the same, blizzard warning, wind chill warning, snow squall warning, time to throw more wood on the wood stove.

Looks like I got ya all beat on this one. (although I don't know if that's a good thing) I'm in Northern Minnesota,
just a few miles from the Canadian border. We have had 34 days below zero so far this winter. lots of days 30 below
or more. The lowest so far was last Thursday when it was 44 below. Perfect weather for some Northern Minnesota
fireworks. You take a cup of boiling water and fling it up in the air. It explodes into ice crystals. Here are a few

On the morning news they showed a Tweet from someone in Alaska, "Please send our weather back."

Out of curiosity I checked the current weather in Barrow, Alaska this morning. We were at -13 F and Barrow was a balmy -9 F. I must say, getting a bit tired of the media focus on the weather though. Several days ago they [media] were saying "it is colder then Anchorage, Alaska!" Anything for shock value, Anchorage is not all that different from Michigan because of its location. It is cold, no question, we had our share of snow so far already this season, but all you need to do is dress for it. Life will go one folks.

KC_, That's amazing!Boiling water?!! Never saw that before. Never had that degree of cold,, looks really dangerous.
It does make me wonder however, if one must pee outdoors....does one shake it off and risk breaking it off?

It doesn't have to be too much below freezing for the thrown boiling water to go to snow.

I'll take a cold day over 100 degree heat any day of the week.

Please stop with the wind chill numbers already, it is basically a meaningless number.

Correct about the media hype. Stores around here were mobbed. People acting like they would be stuck at home for months. I talked to a couple of cashiers today and they said it was crazy. What are you going to do with 9 loaves of bread for 1 week ??
