I have decided to wait on the "mods" that I have planned and return her to "stock-ish" till this winter when I wont ride as much, after all I do live in Socal. Till then the push is to get her back on the road for the summer if that's possible. I got the carb rebuild kits, but will wait on that till I get the new wire harness installed and operating. The adjustments on the carbs appear to be off right now and it did run decently, but didn't idle, so I will see if I can get it to run as-is for now. I will clean up and paint what I can now to stop the rust that has started in places.

I guess if you are in the desert, the winters can be frigid, but unless it's raining I ride year around here in SoCal.

Tomorrow should be a big day, have my order from parts-n-more and vintage750. Needed odds and ends and a new wire harness.  ;D

I have decided to go with a decent stocker......not restored, just a nice rider. I will look for a "less" stock SOHC for my cruiser project. Maybe I can get my wife on it!  ::)

Got my new wire harness today and installed it. Took a VOM and tested operation of the handlebar switches, both need to be replaced in the future but they seem to operate decent enough for now. I don't know about the blinkers cause I don't have any on the bike or the relay, stuff that's on my list. After the electrical check I dropped the battery in and put the tank on, add a little fuel and attempted to start her. The smell of raw fuel appeared and on inspection #2 carb has a steady fast drip, so they will come off and get rebuilt. I also noticed that the oil light didn't go out, on farther inspection it appears to be an electrical glitch, grounding the sender wire didn't do anything either. I readjusted the throttle cables today and it sounded pretty good.....I even got it to idle. #1 isn't firing all the time and there is a huffing at the carb, like there is a manifold leak. I will know more after I pull the carbs.

That's it for now............ ;D

Still had some daylight left after dinner so I went back out there and pulled the carbs. My isolator boots are questionable, well at least 2 are, and I found out what was wrong with #1. It has no air mixture screw.......at all! Hopefully I can get the carbs pulled down tomorrow and start on them and I need to replace all the clamps for the isolators and air cleaner boots. It looks like someone took a hammer to them.

I forgot to mention that while removing them, they just pretty much fell off when I touched them. Today I took them all apart and found out what some of the issues were with the throttle, the linkage is pretty bent, but its an easy fix. Now I just need to get some carb dip to clean them up and start to reassemble them. I've ordered new carb hangers, accell pump, and clamps for everything. I already have the rebuild kits and new air cleaner horns. It really is a wonder that it ran at all!!  :o

As they were on the bike, notice the missing air screw

All apart and organized

Torn hangers

Now a question for those that have rebuilt these carbs. Where the throttle bar goes through the carb body I see a bushing and a rubber sleeve.....are these available, or don't worry about it? Also where can I get the accel pump hoses or what size are they?

Before you discard the old accelerator pump connecting hoses be sure to remove the brass restrictors inside the old hoses and insert them in the new hoses!

Desert,
Here's a link to Wilbur's (madmtnmotors) excellent explanation of how to put the carb rack back together.  He was kind enough to do this for me because I was struggling to get my PD carbs back together on my 78.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,100352.msg1669248.html#msg1669248

It's not what you need at the moment, but I can assure you it will save you much time if you follow his instructions.

Thanks for the heads up and I don't throw ANYTHING away till everything is done. Any insight to where the throttle shaft goes through the carbs?

Desert,
I'm not sure why there would be a rubber sleeve where your throttle body goes through the carb.  The throttle bar goes through those holes that show at the top of your carbs in the photo above.  It merely goes through the hole in the carb and passes on over to the other carbs so that when you pull the throttle, it lifts the bar simultaneously in all 4 carburetors.

I don't even remember if there were rubber o-rings in there or not because the gas doesn't make it up to that point.

Now there ARE rubber sleeves that connect the carburetors lower down and those are for air flow between the carbs and, I suppose, to create a vacuum.  Are those what you are referring to?

Got a picture? Most of the PD carbs used a felt washer here, I'm guessing to mainly keep out grit. It's not a fluid or even pressurized seal so just about any kind of packing would likely work, including a rubber o-ring, as long as it wasn't too tight creating undue drag.

+1. Maybe a PO replaced felt washers with o-rings? You can't get new felt washers unless you make them yourself/have someone make them. Some people go this route as a replacement.

OK, so there felt washers that are more for keeping out gunk. I just noticed that they looked kinda weird.....good to know. I think I will see if I can find some O rings that will work in there place, a couple are missing.

Manual labor day (honey-do's), so I wont be doing much on the carbs today

Still waiting on parts to come in, but a I did get the seat cover and made an attempt to put it on. I'm no upholstery guy but it will work for now. I should have stretched it more, front to back, and may redo it later, but the spike tabs on the pan aren't in the best of shape and neither is the pan, it has some rust issues. It was cheap and the foam was decent, it will work for now till I figure out its final direction. I have a total of $55.00 in the seat.

Still waiting on parts so I got to some things that needed some attention. Pulled the rear tire assembly off to see why the rear brakes didn't work.....you guessed it PO "I have no Idea what I'm doing". I assumed that the shoes were wore out and they were almost new. I guess when they put the arm on it was a tooth off, so I corrected that and Wa-La I have a rear brake with plenty of adjustment. Installed a new drive chain and pulled the front wheel off, checked the bearings and got the screw to come out of the speedo drive so I can replace the cable. I will have to rebuild the front forks soon, they are leaking pretty bad, but I have not drained the oil from them yet. I would not be surprised to find them over filled but will order the rest of the parts so that they are here for the future. The carbs are done and waiting for the Viton seals.....should be here tomorrow. Oh, and I pulled the cover back off of the seat and reinstalled it, this time with ALOT of pulling and stretching......it aint perfect but it looks MUCH better.

Did some more cleaning and whoever painted the engine didn't do a very good job of cleaning it first. As I clean it more and more paint just wipes off, so it will look funky for a while till I can pull the engine to repaint and polish some stuff and get the rest of the frame clean. I think this winter  (all 4 weeks of it)  I will have the frame and swingarm powder coated and do new upgraded bushings and bearings in the swingarm and steering neck too, of coarse that depends on how well it runs when I get it back together in the next few weeks.

More parts arrived today, not the ones I thought would be here. I have to admit that I'm completely underwhelmed at the quality of "replacement" parts that are available......especially at the prices that are charged

The carbs are back together.....with ALOT of internet pic searches. For the life of me I just had a brain fart on how the linkage went together, then "DING" it all fell into place. Hopefully I will get them on tomorrow and fire her up.

What parts have been disappointing, I  would have to say that the only parts I have received below standard are used.

Haha, worked the same way for me. I took as many pictures as I could beforehand, but as a novice, there's always a couple important photos you forget. Glad to hear you figured it out. Is your accelerator pump working properly? Make sure you check this otherwise the carbs are just gonna have to come right back off.

Will be bench testing them today, the fuel line I found is just to thick for the accell pump lines and I had to order the correct stuff, but this stuff should work for a bench test. Had to put in a new window in the house today so my "working" time has been delayed.   ::)

The clamps and stuff that are sold are all cheap Chinese stuff and some of the rubber stuff is nowhere near the original quality and thickness, and they are NOT cheap. I guess its better than not being able to get them at all.

DAD--GUM she fired today and ran on all 4 evenly today. Did a bench sync today and checked the accel pump functions, #4 isn't perfect, but it works and it was in the worst shape of them all. If I can find a deal on a better set to exchange with and keep these as a spare to limit down time for future rebuilds.

I think I have a vacuum leak though, starts right up with a high idle after warmed up, like 3500-4000 revs. If you leave it alone it will slowly idle down to 1K and idle fine till the next burp. The more I look at the carbs, the more it looks like there not seated into the new manifolds. I will check that out tomorrow, but for now it looks like the engine is solid, will know more tomorrow and maybe even go for a short ride around the hood!  8)

Looks more and more like a driver every week.

Sweet! You may know this, but you'll hear/feel a "pop" when the carbs are fully into the manifolds. Just figured I'd mention it.

Thought I did, but then I had them on and off a few times. Not gunna mess with them till the end of the week, they have to come back off. #4 is pretty screwed up and hammered on, I mean it looks like someone took a hammer to it, so I ordered a carb body to replace it. The rest look almost new and its been this long.....another week isn't gunna matter and I can rebuild the front forks this week.   ;)
