The path other's have made for me is going to leave me destitute.

This is the key statement on the entire page.
Well that and Frank's comment at the top.
The rest is just bandwidth.

The problem is that most people like simple, and traditional jobs are simple.  Most don't want to figure out how to be a specialist in this or that.

There is much more intense competition for a middle class job of $75k than there is to sell $250,000 of goods and services on the internet.

I am starting to think with America's golden age behind us the best way for one to succeed is to make their own path.

The path other's have made for  me is going to leave me destitute.

You are correct. Today's business practices are exploitative. They always were exploitative, difference was they provided you with benefits and pensions etc. Most of this was done to avoid unionization.

My friend has wholesaled auto parts for 30 years and now has some of his lighting manufactured offshore. He does well. He has always been a man that wanted to be in control of his own destiny.

As you have said, it is not simple, nor easy. Several times there were lean times and he has had to take risks many would not. If you want to chart your own course, by all means do so. Please gather whatever knowledge you need to maximize you chances for success.

I am retired and very comfortable, I figured out how to hack the system avoiding layoffs and other atrocities. To be honest with you, I am not sure I would take that route again.

To you and the others who are semi-retired or retired what would you do if you had to do it all over again starting today?

Those statistics are badly skewed due to the Labor Participation rate being at its lowest since the '70s. The tens of millions of the population who do not work legally or within the tax system, the exclusion of the military forces who are not part of these calculations, etc...

And people wonder why theres a grouchy portion of this country angered over socialistic agendas? Really? Fix the freakin' economy and stop paying/giving our tax dollars away and then, maybe just then, the job market will return for a significant portion of the population.

Ever wonder why the top 10% of the wage earners in America (>$250k) pay 90% of all collected income tax? Its because 50% of the population doesn't pay any. Calculate in the enormous amount of benefits from State/Federal assistance to these low income families, and many actually earn well into the high $40sK and low $50k range. Freedom isn't a guarantee, its an opportunity.

Rant over.

+1  well done, sir

get a trade, join a union, and not let the education system have me thinking that tech stuff would rule the world, the trades lost a lot to people thinking that a computer would carry them through the rest of their lives.I found out that when I retired the skills I had were in demand,ie carpentry, reno work, not hard to pick up a few bills here and there.bill

I think I would look at things i can do well and am interested in. I would get a job at a company that does that, or get to know people that are in that business. I would learn the business, not only to learn the ins and outs, but to see if I like it.

If you hate what you are doing, no amount of money will make it better.  For a decent portion of my life I traded my passion for a paycheck and a pension, it was not a fair trade.

The trades can be good since you cannot offshore an electrician or plumber. You have to work at it. i hired a Plumber to pipe in my standby generator. He does good work, but he is an #$%* and is always broke. I know a drain cleaner and while he looks like a hillbilly, he is a canny businessman who can put $70K into restoring a Chevelle.

My Son chose to become a Cop, gets paid very well and has good benefits. I tried that for a while and found the senior guys, burnt out, demoralized, angry, and mostly divorced. I advised him to not get into the "life". We shall see. You can;t live your children's lives for them.

Have you thought about pole dancing Chewy? I was talking to a pole dancer recently and she said that not only does it keep her fit, but the pay is excellent! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
