Oh #$%*e!  I have a lot of "leaners" but nothing snapped yet.  My two Palm trees dont look too happy, they survived the "Great Snow Storm of '21", but dont know about this time?

Look on the bright side Ranger, you will have plenty of firewood next winter!

I have a years supply of wood already. I've done nothing but cut down trees since I bought this house. Drought, storms, ice all have taken their toll over the years.
This is worse than the big freeze a couple of years ago. I'll have a lot of chainsaw work to do next week. At least my power is still on.
Talked to a friend a bit ago, a big branch fell on the line to their house. Ripped the whole weatherhead off the side of the house.

Power off since wed.  Major damage to lines in neighborhood. Probably no power until Monday.  At least it’s warmer.  :-\

Sorry for the devastation...winter storms are no fun and people are surprised by the damage and ice storm can have.
Is it worth the hassle of installing a backup generator and wiring changed needed for that? Makes natural gas or propane heating systems much more attractive if you can keep the forced air going periodically with a generator. Not to mention keeping the refrigerator and freezers from losing food stores. That or kerosene or portable propane heaters for emergency use.
I've known some people in the north move their freezer contents outside in coolers buried in snow to keep food from going bad until power is restored. If it is cold enough outside then it is an option if you can keep animals out of it...

Sorry to hear that Ranger.  Your area received .50" of freezing rain, all that weight just literally breaks trees.

I lost power for an hour on Thurs and just a few branches, took an hour to clean it up yesterday.

The freeze is over, 70's tomorrow!

-12 below here last night with the windchill it was like -38. I drove home from work last night at 11pm and the only thing I could think about was, if my car dies so will I.  Currently -9 degrees, should reach a balmy 14 for a high today. Welcome to the great northeast.

Ha ha! I have the POWER! And more importantly the internet..
Soon hot water!
I have major tree damage to address. It will probably take weeks to get a crew out here.

But yeah, at least it's warm here. I have some friends in NY state who are frozen.

By this time tomorrow its supposed to be up in the low to mid 40's into next week, over a 50 degree swing. Makes no sense, normally when its cold like this it stays cold for a few more days and then it might warm up to the upper 20's. Upside is, its good weather for running.

We just finished a brutally cold January here, -30 degrees, the works. Hasn't been that cold for that long since the 1990s.
But, our trees were all broken off by lightning and wind over the previous 12 years, so I don't have the damage like you guys have: they are gone already.

I did pull out my backup generator (it's a HONDA, natch) and fired it up to check it out, just in case. :D
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I've been relying on my Honda EM 3500 contractor grade generator for 24 years. It still starts by the second pull. I have spent 6 to 7 days on the generator for at least a dozen times over the years. It will run the fridge, freezer, wood stove fan, pellet stove, a few lights and 2 entertainment centers.

That's what mine is! I bought it for the motorhome before the world was supposed to end at the century turnover, and hit the road for that [wild?] week. I hadn't touched it since then until a few months ago: I drained the old stinky gas out, changed the oil, and 2 pulls fired it right up. Nice unit. :D

My car is growing teeth !  ;D  Been raining a lot today and coming down hard now at around 5:00pm. Hate ice storms but the good thing is the temp right now is 32 so not instantly freezing on things as we head towards dark. Generator on stand-by though as we lose power a lot where I live. - GRRRR

We’re about to get more. Filled up the generator and extra jugs today. There is a silver lining. Spent an extra long weekend (Monday was “Family Day” in Canada) with both my kids, their spouses and three great g’kids at a lovely cottage, N.E. of Halliburton, Ontario. We all skied for +4 days at “Sir Sam’s”. They’ve all been at it for years, two were instructors. Hard work, but we keep up.

My three favourite places are: strapped into a race car, with the visor down. Riding my K1, with the visor down. Skiing with Family (with the googles down). So blessed to be still able to do all three!

It really was great. My son always teases me that I only enjoy stuff that requires a helmet! So true.
My Dad taught me to ski almost before I could walk. I suspect because my Mom only let him take off for the day if he took me along. Best thing he ever did for me.

Never tried it but there are some places around here. Tried water skiing once but the boat was such a slug it couldn't hardly pull me up. Another failure on my long list !  ;D
UPDATE - Telephone and cable line down across my driveway and wifes car but still working. Still have power at 9:40pm but when I was outside could hear branches cracking and falling all around us in the woods.  Might be "what did you do with your chainsaw today" thread tomorrow  :D

We had wind gusts up to 63 MPH last night/early this morning, with a combination of rain, sleet, hail, and snow, all going sideways. There were 88 MPH gusts recorded at Sunset Point on I-17, about 35 miles from here. I-40 from Kingman to the New Mexico border was closed. It was 31* and windy most of the day, and it's 25* now at 8:50 PM.

Bravo on all 3!
I had to give up on the skiing some decades ago, still miss the fun. In the Spring, skiing in the Rockies is an unparalleled experience.
