8).  It was good hanging out in the pits with you guys. Got my eyes out for a sohc, but doubt that i could find a bike and have it sorted out by Rockingham. Will likely ride the st1100 and camp most nights with a motel every few days. The St1100 did nothing wrong all weekend woohoo!!   I, personally, went through major changes in starting line details.....    I will be at all the t&t that i can for a while....that and cruising craigslist for a sohc that needs a good home....   Thank you guys for being around....   Mike

Nice shot Wilbur.  Sounds like you did very well at Valdosta.  Especially considering you aren't using all the fancy whistles and bells that make consistency easier to attain.  Good for you friend... 8)

Faster than 10.99 requires leather pants too. Jacket and pants do not have to fasten together.

I found a few pictures from the race and took cell phone screen shots to illustrate two diverse styles of launching a bike. Wilbur leaves sitting almost straight up due to the high handle bars on his bike. His body position lends itself to making the bike easier to wheelie off the line as shown in his post above. Moving your weight as far forward as possible changes the dynamics of weight transfer and inhibits the frontend from rising. Also notice the center of gravity on the stock bike. Very high- not good for dragracing. Look at the rear of the bike- no squat. You need squat on the rear to keep the bike from wheelying but if the frontend is rising up as the forks extend, eventually it'll yank the fronend off the ground in a wheelie. Down track, Wilburs bars make it hard for him to lean over and "tuck in" to cut down on wind resistance. ET is lost but more so MPH is cut as a result.

Okay, now notice my body position on launch. My arms are stretched out in front of me due to the flat drag bars on my bike and my body is leaning forward over the engine. This helps keep the frontend down. Notice my forks are not extended as they've been stiffened and lowered.  Look at the rear of the bike and  you can see the squat to help with proper weight transfer. The rear of the bike is going down but the bike is moving forward and not upward. I leave with my feet on the pegs also to help control the bike and keep me planted on the seat when i leave the line at high rpm.  Because my body is leaning into the wind and down low, the resistance is cut considerably. I'm able to tuck behind the small fairing to create a wind tunnel effect around my body, This helps to lower ET and increase MPH.

In conclusion fellas, get some flat bars and forward Z bars and get your body down as low as possible on launch. This will aid you down track to cut wind resistance resulting automatically in a lower ET and high MPH.

Just a little something to think about when you decide to get serious about this drag racing game.

Nice shot Wilbur.  Sounds like you did very well at Valdosta.  Especially considering you aren't using all the fancy whistles and bells that make consistency easier to attain.  Good for you friend... 8)

George

George,

You are absolutely correct. Wilbur did damn good on sunday. More seat time and some other changes to the bike and i expect great things from Wilbur this season.

FAST FRANK: I will make Wilber a tie downs for the front = made many sets and a sewing machine to make parachutes..... soon you might need a chute to stop that SOHC on a short track. If FRANKS forks is still in business pull them out and send them for a hair cut and rebuild = they had years doing that for many drag racers.

Should be no need to cut down forks with 77/78 triple trees, they can slide up 4 inches... I got a pic around of that...
Sure Wilbur can trim some time but it is a street bike, not a track bike... and lower et means what ? in bracket racing..

Lower ET means accomplishment and pride, not wins though. Get the most out of what you got. That means consistency = wins.

Hold up guys, I think you're missing the whole point of the post. It wasn't a direct reflection on Wilbur, I simply used his bike and mine as examples of different styles of bikes. What I was trying to portrait is if a stock street bike, with basic changes can make it easier to launch, thereby allowing the rider to concentrate more on cutting a good light, trying to be consistent in the 60' because your mind isn't clouded by thought of the bike wheeling cause the rpms are to high or bogging cause they're too low.  Racing is a mental sport, take away as many distractions as possible and it increases your chances if winning. A by-product of what I explained in the earlier post is lower ET and higher mph. Using Wilbur specifically, I can tell you from our conversations that he's hooked and his goal is to make rounds. He's not just there to gave fun with the guys at this juncture. The fact that he installed the 836 kit in this engine and is building another motor verifies his seriousness in doing well.

That's the way I understood it Frank.....just some helpful advice ;) And you know what....constructive criticism is OK too......I hope we are all adult enough to handle that when it comes around. ;D

Wilbur is opening the door for all those others that are skeptical about trying. And being successful. Bring em out boys!
