Starting a relationship with a 78, 750k...
« on: October 04, 2016, 03:55:54 PM »
So my name is Thomas, and I've wanted one of these things for as long as I can remember. Just cool personified when I was a kid. I bought this one online, I had only seen a few photographs. When it showed up this morning it was a little rougher than I had expected. I probably paid a little too much, but I'm happy overall. It will be my daily rider, my intentions are to clean things up a bit. Overall I like the style, so no drastic changes.

I'm a automotive technician by trade, and kind of a perfectionist. I believe my signature to be attention to detail and cleanliness. So that is where the love will go into this bike, cleaning it up.

I look forward to all of the knowledge, and help this community has to offer. There will be questions haha.

78 CB750K, 10k miles, numbers match.

Welcome, Thomas.

It looks like your CB750K8 has seen a few modifications to at least the electrical system.  On the positive side, there's a solid-state regulator-rectifier unit, on the not-as-positive side you still have the old tube-style fuse block.  You may want to upgrade to a modern blade-style fuse block.  For less than $6 you can install a 6-slot unit, that will have 2 extra slots for spare fuses.  https://www.delcity.net/store/ATC-&-ATO-Standard-Fuse-Block-!-6!way/p_10959.h_26383.t_1.r_IF1003?mkwid=sAGmlyJOE&crid=38094426869&mp_kw=&mp_mt=&gclid=CInwjLSiws8CFdKGfgodYJkEdw

I would recommend you downloading the service manual (available here free) and printing out a copy for easy reference.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum.
Have you ridden it much yet to see how the carbs are working with those pods on?  I'm assuming the previous owner rejetted the carbs to a slightly larger main to account for the pods instead of the original airbox?

If not and you end up needing to do so, order only genuine Keihin jets.  You can get them pretty reasonably from jetsrus.com.

As a fellow owner of a 78K, you'll love the bike.

Great Bike! I too am the proud owner of a 78K and absolutely love it. I would agree with Don (CB750 Cafe Racer Fan) about the fuse box, I got one from Hondaman when I first restored my bike and it's been a huge help. For some reason I had a really hard time finding the glass fuses in the correct length around here at local auto stores and such.... I think the stock ones were 1" and i could only find 1 1/4" or something if I remember correctly. Much easier to get the blade style ones.

IF you have any questions on your build, you can always reach out to me....Otherwise, you came to the right place...This forum is THE BEST when it comes to it's members helping eachother out. Best of luck.

Thanks, actually spent most of yesterday riding it everywhere I could. Runs good, but there is something up with the carbs. Definitely stumbles down low, i'm thinking I'll try and sync them first. It's strange because supposedly the carbs we're just professionally serviced. But you know how previous owner mumbo-jumbo goes. If it does end up needing jets any idea where I should start considering the pods?

Carpy's 4-1 pipe is made from simple steel, so it is heavy and needs to be finished.  It also comes with not hanger bracket for the tail end of the exhaust pipe, which puts a lot of strain on the exhaust spigots on the head.

I would recommend a stainless steel pipe.  On the less expensive end, Delkevic makes a complete 2-piece stainless pipe for about $330. These range from Yosh-style replicas to different silencers.  http://www.delkevic.us/index.php?route=product/category&path=2412_2735&categorystring=Motorcycles-Honda-1978 Models

MotoGP Werks also makes a 2-piece pipe in the Yosh 4-1 style.  It will run you about $550 and you'll have to wait until he periodically makes and sells them.

Another great stainless option is the Hindle 4-2-1 offered through Kemp Archibald Ripple Rock Racers.  Their prices are in Canadian dollars so the pipes are very affordable when converted to US Currency (even with shipping).  The Hindle is a very high quality item.  It has thinner wall stainless tubing to lighten weight.

Definitely try synching the carbs first.  If that doesn't work, I'd try going up +10 on the main jet size first.  The mains on your bike were 110's stock.  But maybe Wilbur or one of the more knowledgeable guys might know for sure what the usual upgrade size is for these bikes.
Something else you might want to do.  I highly recommend downloading the service manual for the 78's.  I have all of the 78 750 documents in a shared Google drive folder.  Help yourself to them.

So I got sick of staring at the wiring on the left side, the cover is missing. I had some time at lunch so I'm attempting to make my own. I always like to at least try before I buy haha. So we will see how it looks. First few photographs.

I would still need to perfect the shape a little bit, but that's the basic idea. I would like some thoughts, should I run this or go a different route. I don't know if I like it at this point. If it did stay I would probably paint it.

Aesthetically, I would trim the metal back to the mount points so it is not so large.  I little ventilation would not be bad, either.  I would paint or powdercoat it black (or to match you tank if you paint the tank a color).

Aesthetically, I would trim the metal back to the mount points so it is not so large.  I little ventilation would not be bad, either.  I would paint or powdercoat it black (or to match you tank if you paint the tank a color).
I think you're right, I put some holes in it i'm kind of stood it off the mountain tabs a little bit. Looks better but I think it needs to be smaller.

Looks too much like a first attempt haha. I'll try another one.

So it was running crappy and I noticed fuel coming from the drains when running. I pulled the carbs off and set the float height. It runs brilliantly now, no more stuttering, no more leaking. The guy I picked it up from had somebody rebuild the carbs with new floats. Let's just say they were way off, but everything does look new. I'll invest in sync next.
