Totaled Bike!
« on: June 11, 2015, 11:13:48 AM »
So...
After little over a year of working on this bike and tones of help from all you guys, yesterday finally felt like it was ridding amazing! until i got sideswiped and now its totaled! man this has been a long project and i can't believe after all this time i didn't even get one summer with it.
So moving on....
can you guys help me out with what i should do to see what is going to be salvageable and what is trash i know its hard to say at this point but any tips on what i should look for would be awesome? I know the engine case is broke, hoping its just the rotor case and not the whole engine.
any thoughts would be amazing! I'm really upset and sad that my ridding season is over.
but not much i can do at this point but wait and see if the guys INS well pay anything close to what i put into this bike. i'm out about 10k and have no idea if i'll even get enough to rebuild the frame let alone the engine.

Man that sucks to hear! Where did it crack the engine case?

If you think there's frame damage start looking for wrinkles in the paint. I would take the fork tubes off too and roll the on a flat surface to make sure they're not bent either. What made the insurance think to total the bike?

The only crack I'm seeing is the one on the stator.  If that is the only one, that is very easily replaced.

Glad your still with us.
As for that broken cover when you remove it rotate the crank and look for a wobble. I bent the end of my crank once in a similar incident and had to replace it as the wobble did not allow enough clearance for the rotor inside the stator cover.

Please tell me it wasn't a hit n run.

Suing insurance for custom parts repair is an option, even if it takes an attorney.

My buddy's attorney really fought hard to get him paid handsomely after he got t-boned riding his Shadow to work.

Thanks guys.
Not sure if the INS will say it's totaled but I think they will, Due to how old the bike is and the damage to the case. With that said I'm not to sure if it's just the outside rotor case. Right now it's at a lot so I've not been able to really check it out yet.
What about frame damage? Look for cracked paint?

Get it, State farm took our Z34 lumina without permission. They don't like to pay storage. That bike is repairable or at least salvageable. You built it, you can fix it.

If the other drivers insurance totals it and pays you you won't be able to salvage anything off of the insurance companies bike. You will only be able to if you buy back the salvage at a price that most likely will be more than you want to pay.

How are you doing? Any broken bones or road rash? Glad you made it man. So start to get all your receipts together for all your work. Pictures of the build are also very good. Estimate your labor hours. Give all that to the insurance adjuster. Then you can bargain to keep the bike if you want. They really do not want it...

Check the bike for damage to the frame, including twist.  If necessary ask a competent mechanic to measure various points between the frame on either side and to the ground to see if there are differences -- this of course being in addition to any visible signs of damage (bends, wrinkles, rash).  The parts of this bike will be worth buying and installing into a new frame, if the frame is a lost cause.  The motor has a cracked stator cover that can easily be replaced.  You should check the movement of the rotor to see if the crank appears out of balance.  IF so, new crank and salvage the rest.  IF not, just a new cover.  You will need to check your forks carefully for twist or bend.

I doubt the insurance company will give a high value for the bike unless it was insured for a higher stated value.

It really does not take very much impact to break the stator cover.  I have had to replace a few over the years.  Once, just from getting clumsy moving around in the garage.....so I am thinking your bike may not be all that bad.  And it's way more important that you are not hurt. :D

Does not look like its totaled unless the frame is bent.

If they do total it, you may get a check and buy it back as well.  Happened to PecanTree and he rebuilt.

Thats good to hear seanbarney41! attest for me that is.
I wasn't going fast at all maybe 20 mph so it could have less damage then i thought!  the good news is that I did insure the bike for 10k so i'm hoping attest my insurance will cover whatever happened... at this point its just hard to tell if the engine or frame is at all messed up.
and thanks everyone for the nice words! i'm a little banged up but nothing i couldn't walk away from! and that is the most important thing.

I just hope you can document what you spent. Your time is worth something too. That's a start. Then you'll get low balled maybe $2000. You may have to threaten or even take legal action to get them to bend. Their attorney will cost them maybe $10K to start which is in your favor unless they use in-house. Your insurance, ditto. Depends on what you have and which accepts fault. They will hope you want a quick cash in hand settlement too. If you can document your expenditures and his insurance won't cover your $10K then you use your uninsured/underinsured to cover the $10k. Your insurance is not necessarily your friend. It's also a business expense for them so don't expect they will cave easily either. I spent 1 year and half with an attorney but in the end I (we - he got 1/3) got a max settlement from the other guy and 2/3 from my under insurance.

Just glad you are OK!

Not necessarily, Jerry.  I know two guys on this forum that were involved in accidents and both came out sweet after the insurance settlement.

When I insured my bikes, my insurance person asked what each bike was worth ,they agreed with the price.  When the 5 of them  were all under 6 feet of flood waters, they were totaled. I wanted to take less $ for them if they didn't " total "them so I could rebuild them and put them back on the road....Progressive Insurance said that " totaled" on bikes that old didn't mean much it just meant that they would pay for it and I bought them back for $35 each without sending paperwork, they just deducted the $35 for each bike from the check since they aren't interested in picking up the bikes or owning the titles....I kept the bikes and the policy on those bikes current, so there was no problem renewing the reg. cashed the check and rebuilt all 5 bikes....back on the road with like agreed....I keep them insured under the same policy today. That's my story but I wasn't in a multi vehicle accident either.
You  have to make sure what their policies are, talk to  claim agent's supervisors not just the claims agent, they have no idea what the policies are. They just do business as usual...get it off their desk quick who cares. Do this before you agree on a price, at first contact tell them you 'd like your bike to remain with you saving them a pick up fee and without a mark on the title because it's a classic and you will be rebuilding it.  The sooner you find out what this guy's insurance company will do for you the better.
Perhaps your insurance company would be a route to take ,if they agree to it , perhaps they can help.
Glad to hear you're alright and the best of luck with the ins. companies.

So looks like i under valued the bike but still should be enough to cover parts!
my INS said they "would" take care of it no matter what, so I should be good as long as it doesn't turn into a pissing match. and also a member on this site said he would send me a cover! so thats amazing! i'll let you know what i end up doing.
