Triple A pipes acquired

Nice Score! As you can see the bike in my Avatar had them. Built in 1972. Got a lot of looks with those pipes. Really like the longer megaphone, seexy. There was a shorter one available also. I knew there had to be at least one more set in the world, and you got them. (well some other forum members have them too)  Have they ever been mounted?

I think they have been mounted? They are very, very clean though...slight rust on the inside and a dent on the first curve of pipe #2

Any tips on making old pipes last even longer? Should I attempt to know out the dent or is that just a chrome flaking nightmare?

Do you know if these pipes are very loud? I'm guessing they are not...but I guess I'll find out soon enough

Air box rebuild, mounting brackets painted, internal rubber replaced

All chains in place. I three bonded it and had the cases together. Ended up breaking a bolt off due to mental fatigue and a torque wrench and judgement error. Luckily, extracted the broken piece, will try again tomorrow.

Took all weekend but the engine is together up to the cam towers!

Question: what are the green rubbers from the cycle-x kit?

Thank you. That makes sense. I did not do a valve job due to lack of funds and the bike ran awesome other thank the tranny died and has now been swapped out. I hope that it still runs great. If I ever get a raise I'll rebuild the head.

You can replace the valve seals witout removing the head. Of course you would have to remove the valve cover again...

Ok! The cam towers and can are in and the timing mark is set to TDC.

Questions:

- how hard was your rebuilt engine to turn via the alternator. Mine is smooth feeling but does require some effort. That being said, one handed effort.

- doing the lay down on the side method to put the engine in the frame, can you do it with the wheels on? Or is that asking for trouble? Also how did you protect the tiny "screw" spindle sticking out for the points?

Getting closer! Would have had way more accomplished today had I label the cam-gear bolts and bagged them separately. For some reason I threw them in with the spark plugs and took the better part of the day searching fir them

It takes a little effort (lots of things turning)
I propped my engine up with blocks so nothing was touching the ground then dropped the bare frame down onto the engine.

Putting the engine in is definitely easier than taking it out.

Two people and two milk crates. Not too bad at all. Even had a visit from Ricky Racer today! :)

GREAT THREAD!
Just started on a couple of old bikes of mine 77 and 78 750k's and this will help ,as it.s been a while!
One thing.......am I just old school as I just took out the frame bolts and airbox,  chain and other incidentals grabbed a hold of each side and pulled the engine out onto a wooden block.........should it have been harder?

Could you explain a bit how you made the new bezel for the speedo? Or point me to some sites that cover it?

Lessons learned so far:

- do not try to put the entire front end together, then try to put the triple on (the whole deal into the headset, if that makes sense). That will result in you dropping the forks and triple-trees and then freak out and then realize how lucky you are that nothing got scratched or dented miraculously

- go slow. Read and re-read everything. Look at the schematics. I forgot a part on nearly every step and had to tear-back and rebuild. I feel like I have assembled two bikes

As for the bezel; the trick there is have a friend that use to work at Foose and now another cutting edge shop that is extremely nice and offers to make you one...its acrylic and looks great. I have never seen a non-dented one until this one

Now, I just need to figure out what the next step is....

Spend many an hour staring at my bike wondering the same thing, I hate to put something together only to have to take it off again because I should have put "that" on first.

It may also result in stuff being out of alignment.  I do it like:

1. Triples (hand tight)
2. Forks (snug enough to stay in place)
3. Fender (hand tight)
4. Wheel/axle (hand tight)
5. Calipers (hand tight)
6. Torque wheel
7. Torque fender
8. Torque forks
9. Torque triples
10. Torque calipers

I think.  I probably have a dumb mistake in there. :)

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Here's a question:

So I left my wheels just sitting for about 2 years. Not the smartest move ever. The front appears to be fine but the rear has gone all off center and when I re-inflated it, it looks like part of the bead went in much to far and the tire is off-center on the rime at one part in particular.

Did I ruin the tire or can it be deflated and then re-centered properly?
